A shortage of good players, the best young ones now concentrated at the big clubs, the avergae young ones over-paid and without the hunger to make a career of it, crap coaching, a generation of talent-spotters who think you have to be big to be a player, Maggie Thatcher for stopping the free milk in Scottish schools, PlayStation, 24-hour TV stations...

You get the drift?

I do but scotlands demise as a footballing power began a decade before Maggie had anything to do with mlik supplies. Are you sure irn bru's made frae real girders?

Someone has posted over on the Teamtalk " Rumour room " that we are after Everton's Yakubu !!!!! ....... I wonder if he's the striker we've now put 2 bids in for & the well known one Vintage Adidas mentioned ?????

Wouldnt be a bad signing, but I'm sure Everton are after about £8 million for him.

I thought that, but the person reckons £5m could be enough to tempt them, i dont know if he's in the know or what but it would make sense because he would be right up Big Sams street for a striker/ targetman...... And better than Heskey !!!!!

He hasn't got the legs anymore Timmy.

Unfortunately we've never seen the "Serie A" Vince but we need to bite off anybody's hands whose offering £2 million.

Agree totally SR, it's the Serie A version I was referring to in my "seriously good" comment. He's shown very little of it for us but I had put that down to injury, patchy pre-season and lack of match fitness. If as others say his legs have gone then fair enough but I'm not privy to that sort of info. Also agree with others that we paid far to much to get him onboard, but that's another story, we paid it, it's history.

As I said though, on balance, I'll be sorry see to him go, but I guess you are correct that we won't be seeing his A game again.

It would be fun though to see those on here say to Vince's face that they thought he was a pussy  I wouldn't want to stand too close

Tactics differ as well. He was instructed that the first thing you must look to do is hit it in behind, then the frontman and so on. If you don't do this you don't pass, I asked him why? He said we must get it forward quickly to score goals. I said OK, lets say we win it in our defensive 3rd, defence & midfield are deep and the strikers are 2 v 3 about 30-40 yards away from support, what do you do? He said you knock it in behind I said no you don't. You will lose possession most likely its 3 v 2 he said hit the frontman then, again I pointed out the numbers issue. He asked me what I would do I said retain the ball and move it forward quickly by getting my midfield to break into the space between theirs and the defence and work it forward. He did this in his session and got slated, he argued that he would have lost possession and set it up as they had suggested and low and behold he lost possession 3 times in a row. They said that's what you must do, regardless. Its absolutely shocking that coaches are being trained to play direct football as opposed to retaining the ball. When you do your A licence, they will teach you to do what I suggested, contradicting the previous licence. It makes no sense at all.

This is exactly why we are light years behind Spain. Simply put we try to get 11 athletes and make them into footballers, Spain pick players on football ability first with the knowledge that fitness can be easily worked on, whereas innate technical ability is far more difficult. I still maintain that Messi would have been discarded in England almost immediately because of his size.

Surely we're not trying to sign Faty AND Teymourian? We should only sign one of them if Grella's leaving, and that one would preferably be Faty. He's younger and has a higher pedigree of club. We don't need two defensive midfielders, when there's such a lack of options going forward.

Yeah but isn't the Iranian Sam's mate from his Bolton days? That's how we ended up with another deadweight in Diouf ....

Sign Faty and tell Teymourian to jog on.

Nicko, what is the news about Assulin?

Man City are taking him on trial tomorrow for an unspecified period. If he is fit he could sign - and possibly be loaned out. If he is not they have wasted a plane fare.

Very odd altogether.

I don't get it all we have heard is we are desperate for goals and now it looks like we are going to waste what limited funds we have on players who will not really boost the "in" column.

Surely if we can afford 2 players and a Striker one of them should be a left back, so Olsson can stay on the wing. What happens when Dunn gets injured as well? Guess we will have to wait and see what happens as neither are done deals yet.

Oh you are so right there Mark. And what's more there is nothing new about this. This kind of thinking was around in the late 50's. How do I know?......simply because I was a victim of it myself. Way back in 1958 I was playing for Letchworth Town as a right winger and I got spotted by a Luton Town scout and invited for a trial at Luton who were then a fairly good First Div team and managed by none other than Dally Duncan who shortly after became Rovers manager.

So I went to Luton and had a few days on trial and I really thought I had done well and would be offered the chance to turn professional. Then Dally Duncan took me aside and told me that he had been very impressed by my ball control and dribbling skill, but he had considered the matter of ongoing development and thought that at my age then (almost 23) I would be unlikely to develop much more than added fitness and I would definitely struggle to rival his first team right winger (Billy Bingham), and he then added that he believed my height (5'6") was against me making it too. I was absolutely devastated to have so unexpectedly been given this magnificent opportunity to follow in the footsteps of my boyhood hero (Tom Finney) and then to have it snatched away again in what I considered to be a very cruel and callous manner.

I did fairly quickly get over it and determined to concentrate hard on my studies and get a successful career in Electronics (which I did) but it took a while and I simply could not go back to playing amateur football with Letchworth and that was the end of my footballing career.

Mmhm. Our only recognised attacking midfielder/playmaker is a 30 year-old David Dunn, with an injury-ravaged fitness record. We don't have anyone else like him who can link up with the frontman and make something out of nothing - but the emphasis is on DEFENSIVE midfielders?

Didn't Pedersen go on a good goal scoring run in that position when Dunn was injured through January?

I'm pretty sure Sam will be using Pedersen in that position if Dunn is unavailable.

I know simply mentioning the Norwegian's name will annoy some people, but I actually think he's very good in that position. Better than what we can afford to bring in on our budget anyway.

This article says Stoke are preparing a £3 million bid for David N'Gog.

I know he's not popular on here, but I think he's got the potential to be a very good player. He's also comfortable at playing the lone striker role, he's got the height, strength and pace to play it well. His finishing needs sharpening up, but he did score two very well taken goals in Europe last week.

He's the sort of young player we've excelled at taking gambles on over the last few years. For me he represents less of a gamble than the likes of Jelavic anyway since we know he's adapted to the PL and living in the north west.

Mr Nixon, City have become experts in the wasting of money.

Currently, imo they have wasted around £150m of cash by winning the square root of faff all on a poor effort of securing success. Now we await Mankini's attempts at wastage and on the evidence of his buys so far he wont be found wanting.

City have become a powerhouse in the spending stakes but rank amateurs in buying success whilst splashing the dosh. Even Barca must be creaming themselves for taking £24m for yaya or is it haha toure !!!
