I'm not even writing this, but I have heard once again from TWO sources tonight that Grella to Galatasaray WILL happen and very shortly.

This should all become clearer as the week unfolds.

I believe someone else has news on a striker [previously mentioned]...please post what you PM'd me.

come on Nicko you post it?

It is only on pure finance that the 'punching above our weight' statement is true.

Of course, cash is king, but the fact the club is excellently run from JW down helps massively.

The club is stable and Brockhall/Ewood is evidently a good environment.

We are just forever destined to be constrained by our geography/demographics.

If we are punching above our weight financially, then who, in the Chumpionship, is punching below their weight, given that our income is at least double if not treble any team there and has been for 16 out of the last 18 years?

The punching argument based on crowd sizes has been superceded by the Sky argument. Crowd size gravity will no longer take Southampton, Sheff Weds or even Leeds above us, only incompetence on our part will.

This point has been dealt with repeatedly on here - our income may be double or treble any team there but so is our expenditure.

Every team in the league gets Sky money which evens itself out - well the bigger clubs tend to get more Sky money for being on TV more but at least it's not as big a gap as the rest of the finances. Since every team gets this money all it serves to do is push wages up. It also pushes transfer fees between English clubs up artificially. This income we've got over the last 16 to 18 years therefore means absolutely nothing since the only evidence of it can be found in the flash homes and cars of players who've played for us over this time. And of course the positions in the league we achieved and honours won with said players, but that's a moot point in this discussion. If it had any influence financially on anything then it would show in our transfer budget.

Crowd sizes, however, is still a determining factor. The average team in the Premier League probably has a crowd of 40,000 and tickets go for an average of £30. Multiplying 40,000 by 30 by 19 home games equals £22.8 million.

Rovers get an average gate of 25,000 for which the average price people are paying is around £15. Multiplying 25,000 by 15 by 19 equals £7.1 million.

Of course the maths are more complicated than that but the principle is the same. Sky money means very little as all clubs recieve it therefore the bulk of it goes into wages. It does mean we can offer better wages than similarly sized foreign clubs competing for players, but then so can our competitors (plus our new tax rules and the weak pound will negate this).

If Sheffield Wednesday or Leeds get into the Premier League and gain a foothold, then debts and poor financial management notwithstanding, their potential gate income will look a lot more like the first figure than ours. And that can make a huge difference on transfer budget, wage budgets etc.

Joe could be the striker.................Spainish club Real Sociedad were very close

to getting him but they have just signed another player(Raúl Tamudo) after hearing about

Blackburn..............

Sorces close to the Spainish club beleive "Blackburn are very close to finalizing negotiations Man City" hence they dropped out................

Regarding Grella to Gala..........fait accompli......Hope somebody understands French!!

Would be a good signing. wonder if it's a permanent signing or a loan signing. Are you the one who PM Nicko with this?

Cheers unleaded, always value your opinion on players as you know your stuff.

What would you think on Jo for Rovers? I think it's a move that has potential to be really good for us

..which we spend on a squad full of internationals. How many do Leeds have again?

...but look how much they would have to spend to create a squad to match ours, and they have a season to do it. That's rather a big 'if'.

We are a somewhat disadvantaged premier league club but vastly advantaged over anyone outside the premier league. Or will Leeds be outbidding us for Jo?

What's your thoughts on us not making a move for Kone.

Nicko is the Jo story the one you meant?

Yes. Unleaded ahead of the game as usual.

There is definitely something going with Rovers and Jo. Whether he is first choice, second choice or an interesting option is yet to be confirmed.

However Man City want rid and his agents want him to find a better home.

It has a good chance as long as no-one bigger comes in.

No, they wouldn't need a season to do it. They'd need a season to stay up but after that they could kick on.

It's hard to argue with the maths of the calculation I posted, purely going on gate income we are around £15 million down each season on what clubs like Leeds would achieve if they went up. Now I don't think it'd end up working out as £15 million - these things would get taxed for one, but with each season they spent in this league whatever amount it was (and it would be several million) would multiply as a financial advantage over us. The Sky money would be irrelevant as both of our clubs would be getting it.

Yes we have a squad of internationals but they're hardly Spanish, German and Holland internationals are they? They didn't really cost that much to assemble - a £2.5m goalkeeper, our centre backs were 500k and £3 million, our striker £6 million (funds for whom only came after selling a £3m striker for £17m) etc etc. You don't think Leeds could afford that kind of outlay after a season or two if they came up?! Look at how much Wolves - yes Wolves are spending this summer.

We have punched above our weight and we've done it by firstly having very sound financial management and secondly by buying great players for very cheap and either having them as mainstays of our team (eg Samba) or selling them on for huge amounts of money thus funding things like buying Givet on a permnanent basis.

Saying what Leeds or other Championship clubs have now is utterly irrelevant, of course we're better placed than them simply by virtue of playing in the top league. However if they came up and got through the difficult first season their income (before player sales) would be considerably greater than ours. Same goes with Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest and a few other sides too.
