Why are the finances quite so tight there? Is it down to choice or necessity or both? Or is it because the takeover is imminent possibly?

Because we can't and won't spend what we do not have. We don't have a sugar daddy who every now and then decides we need a treat and pays for a player for us. What we buy we have to finance somehow and that means there is very little cash left over. It's called good housekeeping. Unfortunately it means that our manager gets very little to spend and has to just get on with his job. Managers know the conditions when they come here - we don't promise money and then not deliver it, and we don't see it changing much even if we do get bought by someone else.

One could argue we already doing that with a maxed-out wage budget. For the last few seasons we have struggled to get players in as the budget is at its max. Its looking likely that if we are to make any major moves in the market or try and bring in some real quality then we may have to sell yet again to balance the books. Either that or we try and find some low wage freebies.

Seems to me the wage budget is the main issue concerning our finances, pretty much all the money that we get each season goes on wages and i just don't see how that is sustainable long term imo. We have been lucky in that we have sold our best players and not paid the price for it, can we keep doing that? I'm not so sure.

Cheers for that. I'm sure whiteinpeace, like many of us, was unsure of a term to describe good financial management.

The Guti news is disappointing but perhaps the heart is ruling the head. He isn't getting any younger, and players of his ilk have ended up expensive failures in the Prem in the past. You have to allow even the most talented players up to a year to settle (especially those who have spent their entire careers in a vastly different league) and he doesn't have that much time left as it is.

As for Samaras - I initially rated him at Citeh but he is far too inconsistent, both with his application and in his finishing.

The one issue with how Sam did things at Bolton was we ended up with a lot of very good, but highly paid players ageing together and needing to be replaced within the space of a season or two. Speed, Okocha, Campo, Stelios, NGotty, once they left or ran out of legs we had a problem in that we'd paid them all lots in lieu of having to pay big fees for them, but then they left and what do you replace them with? It is ok if there are similar players available again but if there aren't it becomes tricky as you're not getting transfer fees for the players.

But Bolton "play football" according to Nicko, who can't see past his man-crush.

While far from being a 'Nicko-teen'.... I appreciate his daily contributions (and have come

to tune into his guessing games). However..... the 'rah rah Coyley' thing needs tempering, IMO.

Just had an idea a couple of players thought might within budget could do well how about offering 1.5M for Chris Eagles might be worth a cheeky bid and it would get on those inbreds nerves. Also I don't think he would be very much and would be perfect for playing the battering ram role is very good in the air John Carew would be the perfect partner for Kalinic and would improve his game & obviously experienced in the prem.lge.

Eagles is an overated ponce. Carew would be a brilliant signing, doubt we could afford him though

Annan looked mint tonight against Germany, ball retention was almost 100% protected back four really well, he could replace Andrews as he can point as well!!!

Same guy we were looking at, right? But Ince opted for Grella and Andrews. Y'ouch!

Here we go again. Yes, he has done decent job. He still plays in Norway but not for long probably. Just not the kind of player we need right now.

Carew wouldn't be bad on a cut-price deal, but it's not really the model the club should be following. We need to make a serious profit on players in order to improve the squad per season. I know some folks are sick of hearing it, but resale value is paramount.

Not quite. Being good enough to make a difference and actually score or create some goals is paramount. Then resale value. You can carry a few oldies in the team if the balance of your squad is right and enough of them have resale value. A team of younger players doesn't have the experience necessary but a team of older, more experienced playes create problems if they all need to be replaced at about the same time. We need a bit of both. Not advocating buying Carew btw. Doesn't seem to score a lot of goals for Villa - not the striker we need imo

Carew has become increasingly injury prone with age. He's on bigger wages than MGP and would cost too much for our current budget. Not realistic but when fit a player who would easily make our starting XI. He's not a natural goal scorer though...

No chance of getting him now, just another example of what a dick Ince was.

As I recall when we signed Andrews, he was telling us all how he knew a midfielder when he saw one (obviously referencing his playing career). Yeah, right Paul.

Annan did look great by the way.

Marcelo Carrusca,

Was offered around last year by Galatasaray. Quick tricky left mid 26, argentinan, loaned out back to argentina last year, gala are desprete to get rid but having seen him play when he first signed for gala always thought he had potencial Maybe a swap for Grella and some £ or a cheap loan move to cover LW for us.???

Anyone heard of him as well before?

We at Bolton are linked in the Sun to Mphela (SA striker). I somehow don't believe we're in for him, but I think he might be worth a go for you guys.

Seems like he'd fit into to a SA system well, big strong and able to hold it up and he has some pace. Ok not a great goalscoring record, but if you really only have a little to spend it'll be hard to find a top goalscorer (it is when you've got 8M just ask Gary Megson!).

He's flopped in Europe already though, but perhaps at 25 he's more mature now?
