" We actually budgeted to finish 13th but Sam put up a compelling case for Michel Salgado.

This meant we had to re-forecast to 11th. "

So what was Warnock sold for then?

After a series of comings and goings (10 in and 10 out) the new wage target was looking very difficult and we chose to raise funds by selling Stephen Warnock, instead of lowering wages.

I’ve said before selling players to maintain operating costs isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, to be truthful it’s not my preferred model, but it’s a model that works for us.

That bit makes perfect sense.

What I'm struggling to believe is that the budgeted position was moved from 13th to 11th at the same time, surely Warnock's fee was enough?

When you combine our terrible season just prior to that summer, plus how much other teams around us were spending in comparison to our negative budget, it seems odd that the budgeted position would be raised.

Wow - i feel as though i have just travelled back in time reading the above posts.

Boyd deserves a chance. Anyone who has scored that many goals at the age of 26 and available on a free must be an option for a club like Rovers. He scored more than Henrik Larsson which is a great achievement. Some of our fans need to get off their high horses. Seriously. He is not good enough, he certainly isnt and so on. We are a top 10 - 15 side with a tiny budget.

A wet and windy Tuesday down at the Hawthornes, awful game - i can just picture Boyd scoring. You know the type of games he will flourish in an those he will not.

I've given up trying to rationalize where our money goes. You'd think the television money, sponsorship, and finishing place money would amount to more than the £2.25m we got for Benni. The pay structure of the club needs serious revision if it really is sucking so much revenue out of the club.

Boyd is definitely worth a shot on a free transfer. Let's give him a chance before we shoot him down. At 26, we could still make a buck even if he does flop. We'd still need another striker after that, and a new midfielder would be nice, but god knows where the money will come from. Maybe when Mr. Burns takes over Ewood Park.

I was against Boyd before but now think he's worth a pop, he'd be keen to prove himself and wouldn't be on any more than the likes of Piquionne I imagine.

At this stage Boyd and Guti would be awesome, if you told me I would be happy with those 2 being our only incomings this season after the Villa game I'd either laugh or cry.

I think Linganzi may be asked to make the step up this season.

If we had money to spend I'd say we could do better than Boyd but the fact is we don't.

Worst case scenario: we sign him on a free, he flops and warms the bench, and we sell him next summer. If we pay him £20k a week (I've heard he was on £16k at Rangers - he could probably get more going to Turkey but it sounds like he's well up for trying the Prem), don't see a single goal and get up to £1m for him next summer, we've not lost anything.

Whatever league you play in certatin things remain the same, technique and goalscoring ability, have a look at the clips of Boyds goals someone posted, in particularly a volly and look at his body shape as he volleyed the ball in the net, absolutely perfect, couldnt take the ball any earlier as it dropped, a great goal at any level of football.

On a free I think Boyd would be worth a shot, I think he could play the role of Derbyshire. Sam has often criticised our lack of finding the net this year, now while Boyd's all round game is nothing special at least he is a goalscorer. He could be a useful player in the last 20 minutes or so or even on the rare occasion we start with 2 up front.

Not an ideal signing but for a free transfer I think we could do a lot worse. I'd argue we should have kept Derbyshire but then we did bank a few million for him.

Funny how things seem to come full circle sometimes though, Derbyshire was criticised for not having much of an all round game and being nothing more than a finisher which it seems is exactly what we lacked at times last year.

maybe the interest in boyd is becuase sam feels he could be a stop gap until january , when the takeover will be complete , and maybe funds will be made available for a more "sexy" signing

He's not good enough - get over it :P

Derbs was a good player for us. He was a great option from the bench and a decent finisher. I couldn't care less about him being local or whatever. To say he's no better than what we already have is ridiculous.

Boyd will be seen as a low risk option. No fee and if it doesn't work should be easy enough to move on.

£2.5m buys naff all at EPL standards. But given our high wage bill its all we have left from ALL the money that comes in. Given where we finished last season I personally can't complain. And if anyone is under the illusions that a new owner is going to come in and splash the cash, think again.

This is the Rovers model; low transfer fees, high wages when compared to turnover, sell to clear lowish debt levels = Premier League football. What's there to complain about? I can think of at least 72 clubs who would happily trade places with us.

Anyway, can't wait for Big Sam to unearth the "new Keith Andrews"....

Boyd has a good scoring record - so worth a risk...especially on a free....he is also on a low wage so shouldnt command too much to come here.

Id be happy if we signed him aslong as we see more quality added to midfield

He was consistently over looked by Rangers when they played 1 up front and he started very few Old Firm games and I think he failed to score in any of them (I could be wrong about that). The only positive thing about him is that he would be a free transfer, which is probably attractive to the club. Has their been any official word on a transfer budget? Wasn't Sam due to get the money from the sale of McCarthy as well as the money generated by finishing 10th?

I just can't believe some on here we moan when we are linked to the likes of Beattie/Benjani then we get linked to a goalscorer and people find fault with him. The statistics don't lie his goalscoring record is phenomenal yes it's a weaker league but look at the likes of Zurab,Tugay etc. they made the step up and did well for us, in their hay day before they left/got frozen out. For every Hesselink their is always a few who come over and make it and we need to be realistic. Sam has 3 names 1 we don't know the other 2 Boyd/Pokemon and I know who I'd prefer. If you put Boyd's statistics up against Pokemon's there is only one who clearly comes out on top. I mean 3 goals in 31 games for Pokemon in the EPL hardly sets the prem on fire. Roy you say shouldn't we have the money from Benni sale/finishing higher up the league. How many more times does it have to be cleared up the higher finish in the league went on Salgado's wages the benni money is there to spend hence being said the 2.5M in the press. Your theory about him being overlooked and not good enough for the premiership is shot down in flames if he did not play regularly how did he score 101 goals in 143 games that tells me he was a regular. You say the only positive is he is a free transfer wrong. He is the only free transfer with a fantastic goalscoring record also you have to remember we have to fill the striker void & the creative midfielder role how are we supposed to do that with 2.5M so if we get Boyd in on a free means we can spend more on a midfielder that would improve us. But I do agree with a previous poster on here about the person who writes up contracts & termswe need to be more ruthless in how these are done in the case of Grella/Zurab we need to pay less in wages in relation to our turnover and I think it is vital we get these players who are sucking the wage bill dry of the books who will never make it into the team e.g. Zurab/Chimbo/Jacobsen.

Rant over!.
