Forlan is probably a bit too old to go anywhere bigger than Atletico now. Shame, absolutely fantastic player. Still a mystery as to what happened to him at United - he looks like he'd score goals in any team.

I dont think the mystery was anymore than pressure and his age, his game, like a good whiskey has matured with age, its just a shame Man utd bought the white lightening version of him :lol:

It's not really a mystery though is it, many good players have gone to United and couldn't hack it. Pressure can do funny things to certain footballers.

I remember you breaking the Forlan to United transfer on century fm Nicko, Elton Welsby was the presenter I think.

Interesting news and from what I've seen wouldn't be too disappointing at all

This site often has interviews with Nelsen - they love him over there and he gives real good interviews - worth taking time to read them if you can find some.

Just to clear a couple of things up.

ANNAN...was wanted during Mark Hughes's time but could not get a work permit...Ince sniffed around him when he came in but DID choose Andrews instead...to be fair, nobody else has taken him in the Premier League...he is a smashing little player but considered too small for the English game.

And here is the problem with the English game, Wilshere is small, as are many of the Spanish team, for me if you have quality, you will cope, his range of passing, stamina for a small lad and his ability to continually find feet with the ball are exceptional, however to play him, you really need a good wide player and a good attacking midfielder.

Here, Here.

Scholes was dumped and almost lost to the game because of this stupid outlook? How many others as well?

All that matters is skill.

There has to be a reason why a (two weeks shy of) 24 yr old "next Essien" is playing at his third Norwegian club. We're not the only club that have passed the opportunity to sign him.

I seem to remember the first time we were linked to him, under Hughes, that it would've been too difficult to get a work permit for him? May have been the reason the second time around?

The transfer topic of summer 2008 is gone, but I'm pretty sure not even our Norwegian members were advocating us buying him. I have seen just about 5 matches from him, and he has looked good, but so did for example all the Senegalese players in 2002. Amdy Faye, Diao, Diop, Fadiga, Diouf.. flavours of the month.

All those Senegalese players, except Fadiga, have been good premiership level players. The over inflated price of the initial move is what we have to be careful about.

Ince should be ashamed of himself for passing up Annan, but even more so for signing Grella, Andrews and Fowler. The man clearly has no clue what qualifies as Premiership quality. Why John Williams thought he deserved more time, perhaps to validate his own blunder, is beyond me.

Forlan didn't look out of his depth at United. If I remember rightly, he created chances for himself and was always available but didn't get the rub of the green. If you don't hit the ground running, especially at Old Trafford, the pressure soon mounts. This reminds me of another player who failed in the PL - Helder Postiga. He did everything but score for Tottenham, but they cut their losses.

Let's not forget that this isn't some kind of indian summer or late flourish for him. He has won 2 golden boots as the best goalscorer in Europe since moving from Manchester. I guess it's a sign that Brits in general don't really care about what's going on in other European leagues outside of the absolute top teams.

Sure. That was just a response to the top European clubs talk. The likes of Gyan and Annan don't offer anything to the top clubs - if they get their top club -move, they'll sit on the bench or in the stands. They might be good players to mid-table teams like us, but their inflated prices rule us out, like you said.

What is laughable is that Annan is 5 foot 9, the great Makelele whose impact on the modern game led to a position being named after him was only 5 foot 7. Holding midfielders don't need to be tall.

From that LT Story.......

"Brazilian defender Rodrigo Araújo, formerly of Portuguese side Boavista, is understood to have linked up with the Rovers squad in Austria on trial"

It also states

"The Lancashire Telegraph has revealed over the past couple of days how free agent Kris Boyd and Lyon striker Frederic Piquionne are on Allardyce’s radar but it is understood neither are his immediate priority"

Anyone care to explain why we might be looking at defenders? From my perspective if there was any areas that don't need immediate strengthening it’s the defense.

CB- Samba, Nelsen, Givet, Hanley, Jones= solid enough.

RB- Jacobsen, Salgado, Chimbonda, Emerton= solid enough.

At left back you could argue we need another player there but i wouldn't say it was vital we do so, Olsson and Givet can do a job there for another season.

I have a good idea! How about we actually use our limited resources in transfer fees and wage budget space to prioritise what areas to spend on? Striker being by far the area we are weakest. Focus all the effort and money on there, if there is anything left over then perhaps look at improving areas that are less of a priority right now.

I heard the boy who was over was obscure, just not THAT obscure.

Brazilian, 21 or 22, was at Boavista but hardly played. Went back home to a small side where he played for a year.

Hmm.
