Interesting link, CR. According to the font of all knowledge (wikipedia), apparently Boca Juniors announced in June that his contract would not be renewed. So the free agent bit certainly fits with our current recruitment policy.

From what I can make out from the quote below, the article says that he has "interesting offers from Europe, but especially from England and Turkey", but that the team looking to take him on is Blackburn Rovers, "where Roque Santa Cruz plays at the moment". The article from UltimaHora.com is dated 16 July 2010. Just wondering if I have misunderstood - anyone...?

"Por último, anunció la reunión con el representante del otro seleccionado, Claudio Morel Rodríguez, que a su vez tiene interesantes ofertas de Europa, más específicamente de Inglaterra y Turquía. El equipo que incluso había anunciado su incorporación es el Blackburn Rovers, donde en su momento jugó Roque Santa Cruz."

it is my understanding that 'incorporacion' translates to incorporated or brought into the side (signed). That Paraguayan article makes it sound like it's nailed on.

That a complete lie, no? I mean 5 day trial is NOT a contract offer, is it?

Redknapp moving for Jones is the first seriously bad news this summer. Hopefully he will realise that:

1. His prospects of first team football are much better at Rovers. In fact this 3-5-2 stuff could amost been seen as Sam building his team around giving him an extended first team run.

2. Spurs are a graveyard for English players. In fact they are graveyard for promising careers fullstop.

The moves for the two midfielders is encouraging. I always felt that as soon as the transfer market started moving. opportunities would emerge fr us that would be very attractive regardless of takeovers and non-existant transfer budgets.

The Rovers probably rank about 30th in the world league of player wages. Is anyone telling me that there are no good players left in the world after the first 330 have gone elswhere?

I think Phil Jones would want to stop at rovers long term. He's a Blackburn lad, supports the club and he might want to captain the club one day. Also Spurs wouldn't be the right club for him. Not likely to play alot, would he been comfort in livily in London, maybe not. Look at Bentley, went there and not played alot and his career has gone nowhere but if he would have stop at Rovers. He would be playing reguarly and maybe Big Sam would have build his side around him and Dunny.

Hasn't Jones just been given a 5 year contract by Rovers? This is just newspaper talk without any substance. Jones will imo be at Rovers for a few more years yet.

I just wonder if sam would be willing to accept an offer for one of our defenders if a very good one came in.

We have jones, nelsen, samba, givet as well as Hanley comin through the ranks.

I could see him letting one go if a big offer came in as the money could be used to strengthen up front. Nelsen could be subject to a bid after a very successful world cup campaign (based on his own personal performances).

I'd be willing to sacrifice him if we could be sure that jones would continue to perform at the level he has shown so far.

Too early to sell Jones for two reasons. He has just signed a new contract and we wont be getting anything close to what he COULD be worth at the end of the season. I think he will be here this season for sure. The rest depends a lot on a takeover, etc...

A bit unfair Ricky.

Jones has immense physical attributes and I think our team will do better with him this season than without him. Id take the gamble on him. Plus its not like we have a multi-million pound offer to consider. Do you really think Spurs would offer anything more than 3-5 million? I dont.

To be fair I was playing devils advocate a bit there bobby.

I personally wouldn't sell jones. I'd be very tempted however to sell nelsen if we got a good offer.

There are however a lot of examples of players bursting onto the scene and then fading. Could you imagine how everton would have felt if they'd turned down the £10m for Jeffers only to find out that he was a flash in the pan.

Unlike MGP of a few years ago Jones hasn't really burst on the scene fully yet though - it would be completely stupid to sell him before he has had at least a full season or two under his belt, we wouldn't realise anything like his true value.

Samba is also much too important to us to even contemplate selling. If on the other hand a large offer came in for Nelsen, at his age that would be very good business for us with Jones and Hanley emerging.

Chimbonda and Zurab can go - along with Jason Roberts - and those are the three players who will have to leave to bring in money for reinforcements.

I like Chimbonda but you have lots of right backs and he can go. Zurab is now sub for the reserves, but sitting on his contract - which is understandable.

I don't think there is anything in the Jones story and I don't see anyone paying big for Samba right now.

If either of those went the manager may opt to stay in Portugal and have another round of golf.

Business as usual?

Nicko, someone said that they served Sam and Raul at Northcote Manor yesterday. I know you said Sam's in Portugal but could there be any truth in this at all.

Sam was in Portugal yesterday and is still there today...Sir Bobby Robson golf thing...good cause, peculiar timing.

3-5-2 and 3-5-1-1....check the pre-season thread

Just checked it thanks, interesting that 3 at the back is constant in both games, I think we just could see two up top this season, we are unable afford one striker good enough to play on his own and score goals, so I think we will see a different system.

3 at the back should theoretically provide more cover in the center of defence, but the wing backs will have to be first class athletes. Olsson could well be, but on the right side can Salgado make it in possibly the hardest position in terms of physical attributes and stamina?

Bobby, I would imagine this has been thought out, prozone is pretty accurate in assessing stamina and physical capabilities.
