Amo Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Spurs would have to pay top dollar for Jones, and they'd be crazy to do that based on nine first-team appearances. Next season is a massive one for Jones, as we'll really see if he's a PL player, or another young flash in the pan.

chaddyrovers Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Nicko. are we sending a scout to watch Jelavic in the first game of the season for Rapid Vienna? Is he still Big Sam 1st choice for us? If Roberts goes than will we be after 2 or 3 strikers?
SYRovers Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 So is the NOTW's article on Assulin accurate?.. ..the tone of the atricle suggests that we are almost doing him a favour..I thought Arsenal and Spurs were after him? any thoughts Nicko or anyone else for that matter?!..
Kelbo Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Hobley. Thought that was a joke at first!! Well ther older posters may remember anyway!!

If Roberts goes than will we be after 2 or 3 strikers? I would imagine he would be, but there are so many strikers being watched right now that it is hard to take in... Roberts can go, it's a matter of who wants him and what they are paying. If he leaves there could be a couple of strikers coming in...the next few weeks may be lively.
DavidMailsTightPerm Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 To be fair I was playing devils advocate a bit there bobby. I personally wouldn't sell jones. I'd be very tempted however to sell nelsen if we got a good offer. There are however a lot of examples of players bursting onto the scene and then fading. Could you imagine how everton would have felt if they'd turned down the £10m for Jeffers only to find out that he was a flash in the pan. I would hope it would take stupid money for Rovers to even consider letting Jones go. For me supid money would be £10 million with add ons tied into future development. Other than possibly City - I can't see anyone willing to risk that amount of money on a relatively unproven centre-half. Personally I think he will be an absolute star - though I like Nelsen - we looked rock solid with Jones and Samba at the centre of our defence. IMO the extra responsability also brought out the best in Sambe (though maybe it was just that Jones and Samba's games compliments each other ?)
Guest Wen Y Hu Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Interesting link, CR. According to the font of all knowledge (wikipedia), apparently Boca Juniors announced in June that his contract would not be renewed. So the free agent bit certainly fits with our current recruitment policy. From what I can make out from the quote below, the article says that he has "interesting offers from Europe, but especially from England and Turkey", but that the team looking to take him on is Blackburn Rovers, "where Roque Santa Cruz plays at the moment". The article from UltimaHora.com is dated 16 July 2010. Just wondering if I have misunderstood - anyone...? "Por último, anunció la reunión con el representante del otro seleccionado, Claudio Morel Rodríguez, que a su vez tiene interesantes ofertas de Europa, más específicamente de Inglaterra y Turquía. El equipo que incluso había anunciado su incorporación es el Blackburn Rovers, donde en su momento jugó Roque Santa Cruz." it is my understanding that 'incorporacion' translates to incorporated or brought into the side (signed). That Paraguayan article makes it sound like it's nailed on. That a complete lie, no? I mean 5 day trial is NOT a contract offer, is it? I think it just means that Rovers are interested in taking him on (i.e., incorporating him). A trial in itself is by no means a contract offer - it would be given with a view to a contract being offered. Also, the bit I was wondering about was the ... Blackburn Rovers, "where Roque Santa Cruz plays at the moment" ... bit. When I wrote "From what I can make out from the quote below..." what I really meant was "I don't know any Spanish, can anyone help me...". I now realise that jugó is in the past tense and the phrase should be rendered along the lines of ... Blackburn Rovers, "where Roque Santa Cruz played [for a period]" ... Sounds kind of promising.
john.leigh Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 All this talk of right backs but nobody's mentioned Jacobsen... Now admittedly I only get to see him on TV & he didn't get too many games last season but I like what I've seen. He also had a reasonable world cup in a average team. We can't get rid of everybody, we need some players who are happy to be just in the squad. I would guess that Jacobsen isn't on massive wages and think that if we keep hold of him we'll have a very good back up player for right back. Zurab, Chimbonda both can go for me. Please. With a defensive pool of Jacobsen, Salgado, Givet, Jones, Nelsen, Samba, Olson, Emerton & Hanley we have more than enough thank you. Touchy subject but even Andrews did OKish when he had to slot in the back line...

We have two accomplished right-backs in Salgado & Emerton. We should offload him, if we can, but it won't be a disaster if he stays. Zurab & Chimbonda need shifting first.

Agreed - Salgado 1st choice, Emerton 2nd choice....and if playing wing backs - Jacobsen doesnt really have the pace or energy to do it. Ramm doesnt seem far off either so he's another right back. If we can find buyers then id happily offload Chimbonda, Jacobsen, Zurab, Roberts, Brown & Andrews
Bobby G Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Im going to be shocked to say this but here goes. We cant afford to sell Andrews. Plays a number of positions, and a decent squad player. Unless a take-over goes through and we can replace him adequately. Right now we are short in numbers for the middle three.

I wonder if Marcus Pedersen is one of those being watched by us. Good goalscoring record in Norway. I would personally sign him and Jelavic. And Maybe llan if he impress on his trial.
Exiled_Rover Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Anything in the Faty rumour, Nicko? It FINALLY looks like the transfer window is hotting up. If we play our cards right there's a good chance we drastically improve the team.
AggyBlue Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 We cant afford to sell Andrews. Plays a number of positions, and a decent squad player. He got the armband when Robbo was subbed. My heart sank.
Kelbo Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 He got the armband when Robbo was subbed. My heart sank. Thats destroyed my faith in football, in a year we have seen Barcelona and Spain show how football should be played, we then destroy younger players in the squad seeing a totally inept player take the armband, ******* disgrace!
brian_gallagher85 Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Oh shut up. I'd rather a player like Keith Andrews took the armband in a meaningless friendly than an arse like David Bentley, during his time here. Also, nice to see the mega millions West Ham are spending are going on the wages of Benjani
AspRover Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 So he got the captaincy for a bit of one pre season game with only a fraction of the first team squad? Who cares? Frankly the captaincy has sweet FA to do with footballing ability, for all we know he might be a real leader off the pitch and a great example to the youngsters... If he gets made full club captain then I'll be angry - if only because that means we're unlikely to sell him - but until then where's the issue?

Also, nice to see the mega millions West Ham are spending are going on the wages of Benjani Agreed, that is such an over the top statement it's plainly ridiculous. Andrews, no matter what people think of him as a player, is actually a leader on the pitch. Doesn't matter if you like it or not, we need players who can lead and experience helps.
67splitscreen Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Thats two different players, Myles and Anderson isnt it? Just Googled, Myles Anderson footballer, that's what popped up about half way down the page.

If he gets made full club captain then I'll be angry - if only because that means we're unlikely to sell him - but until then where's the issue? It wasn't a case of anyone taking the arm band. Robbo wanted to give it to Frank. He wouldn't take it but said somrthing and pointed to Julie, Robbo then ran over and gave it to him. This implies to me that he must be high in the pecking order and highly thought of within the club, both of which I strongly disagree with.
nicko Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Anything in the Faty rumour, Nicko? The story was out at the start of last week, I think there were three or four teams mentioned...so I am treating that one with caution. Strikers seem to be the priority just now. Maybe one, maybe two. Assulin's trial would mean a new midfielder for nothing if he is fit enough and strong enough. Then, perhaps, this left-sided defender - the Paraguayan lad has a ring of truth to me. No evidence to support it though.
Amo Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 This implies to me that he must be high in the pecking order and highly thought of within the club Does it? Or could it be a siege mentality based on the stick Andrews has received?
BlueMonday Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Thats destroyed my faith in football, in a year we have seen Barcelona and Spain show how football should be played, we then destroy younger players in the squad seeing a totally inept player take the armband, ******* disgrace! He may lack ability, but any player who pulls on the Blue n White halves and tries his best gets my support, end of. He doesn't shoot his mouth off in the press and doesn't rock the boat. The real disgrace is players who refuse to play. That is a F*****g disgrace.
Doaksie Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Then, perhaps, this left-sided defender - the Paraguayan lad has a ring of truth to me. No evidence to support it though. Claudio Morel Rodriguez wikipedia page Interesting extracts - He was runner-up behind fellow Paraguayan Salvador Cabañas in the 2007 South American Footballer of the Year award. He was also selected in the "Ideal Eleven of South America in 2007. In December 2008 he was chosen as the Paraguayan footballer of the year by the press. On 20th June 2010, prior to Paraguay's group match against Slovakia at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Boca Juniors announced they would not renew Rodríguez' contract. Seems to have a decent pedigree, but I just wonder where that would leave the experimental 3-5-2. I suppose it's nice to have fluidity in the squad, leaving us inter-changeable between formations when the scenario dictates. EDIT - (from the Fifa World Cup site: Morel’s other great strength is his adaptability. Although he is nominally a left-back, Claudio has played in the heart of the defence, on the left-hand side of the midfield, and even as an orthodox central midfielder.)
LeChuck Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Zurab is now sub for the reserves, but sitting on his contract - which is understandable. Understandable if he has no professional pride. If someone relegated me to cleaning the bins but on the same money, I'd go elsewhere on less money to keep some dignity. Never mind. I'm sure when Zurab's kids and future grand kids are older and he wants to tell them all about his professional football career, they'll be riveted by his stories about sitting on the reserve bench.
