[Archived] Serie A Players Call For Strike

BBC: Strike by players to halt Serie A in Italy.

This sounds like it could have a knock-on effect throughout Europe if it escalates.

From what I can gather, players aren't happy about how they're being treated when they have 12 months to run on their contract. It sounds like they're getting arsey when clubs try to move them on and protect what little of their investment remains.

I really hope player-power doesn't win this one. I hate it when players screw clubs over by letting their deals run down.

I dunno Chuck, sounds like the clubs are raching a bit more than that... Sounds like the clubs want to add language so that if the player has less than a year left, and the club has found a transfer for the player, the player can either accept the transfer, or sign a new extension with the currnent club.

THAT seems a bit over the top to me. Granted, I'm not studied in the ins and outs of when a player can refuse a transfer in Italy... but assuming they have that right in their contract. It sounds like the clubs want something for nothing. Its ripe for potential abuse byu the clubs, really. Got a player with a yaer left, line up a transfer to another club that meets the awkwardly worded criteria, and either the club gets a transfer fee, or he forces the player to sign an extension.

It puts the club in a very powerful bargaining position, in my eyes. Instead of the player having the opportunity to work out his deal and become a free agent, the club can force him to have only 2 options, stay or go to this team we pre-determine for you to go to...

I don't normally sign with the over-paid prima-donnas, and I'd need more info beore really feeling strongly one way or the other, but form the BBC sport online article, I'm not sure the players are wrong in opposing the rule.

A strike, however, is a very severe statement to make, of course.

Sounds great to me.

The deal for transfer would need to be an improved deal and it would work the other way whereby a club had to accept a transfer in the last 12 months of a contract for a wantaway player.

Also the club would have to offer an improved deal or the player could leave under bosman.

If no transfer was reached and in improved offer was tabled the player would have to take a minimum 12 month extension.
