One of my old friends of the Seasiders persuasion and we're in fairly regular correspondence as the end of the season gets closer. What follows is an edited version of his latest message, which I'm posting to remind us that, however pessimistic we may be about the rest of the season, each of the other 4 teams is almost certainly to a greater or lesser extent in as much mire as we are.

It's the worst of all worlds.

The feeling at Pool is one of bemusement. This is the same free-scoring team who still pile forward and can usually slice open ANY opposition in front of them. Sadly, the moment the ball comes within 10 yards of their own penalty area, the grey matter seems to routinely fuse.

If Pool win a game, they'll win two or three. The feeling persists that 3 or 4 of [the team] have their future in the PL already sorted, and accordingly the effort isn't going in as it should. If that's true, they're doomed, because that's a divided dressing room. The catalyst is THIS Saturday; if they beat Newcastle, they'll also beat Stoke (who will have an eye on the Cup Final). If they lose on Saturday, they won't get to 35 points.

This team have been holed below the waterline by the January Transfer Window. The Player's Agents have been on their case during and since that time and the chosen few will double/triple their wages when they move. The scenario is one of unfulfilled financial aspirations, and BFC are partly responsible for that. We all know that Pool can't match Liverpool or Spurs in the wage packet, but we can certainly equal some of the wages that these lads are moving for. I don't know if Charlie, Gilks etc are even motivated. The season WILL be defined by 5pm this weekend. The fact that there are still 5 to play is largely irrelevant; it's about whether they even care.

If they corporately agree to give it a lash for the last few weeks then there's a chance, but their efforts against Wigan were so lacklustre and feeble that it looked as if they've already "jacked".

[The girl whose season ticket I blagged to get into the Jimmy Armfield stand at Bloomfield Road last September] was told by one of the Gatemen that there was nothing wrong with David Vaughan. He'd had a bust-up with Ollie, who wouldn't play him. He's supposed to be off to Bolton on £25k/week plus bonuses (double what he earns now). To stand any chance, everyone needs to kiss and make up this week . This is no longer about football..........we are not hopeful. A divided house cannot stand! ( But then again.......... this IS Blackpool ! )

If they took a step back and looked at the bigger picture they wouldnt be bemused. Sure, it must be a shock to see your own team fall from grace so fast. But the rest of us would have seen the likes of Hull and Burnley in recent seasons to exactly the same things - small budget teams coming up and playing fearlessly, taking teams by surprise early on who expected them to park the bus, before teams suss them out mid season and their weaknesses are exposed.

It's been a fairly familiar pattern, which is why the only teams on small budgets who've consistently succeeded in this league have generally been more direct, defensive minded and tough in their approach.

only just realised brum are a full 3 points ahead of us, thought we were on the same or a point in it. Really taken the smile off my face from seeing them get destroyed by chelsea....3 points in 5 games is way too big a lead over us, we'll be lucky to get 1 point. Balls

Very good game....Tottenham looked more likely to win it! Van der Vaarts scuffed shot should have been buried!

Watched the El Classico too, great tactical battle which the special one won and Real won their 1st Copa del Rey for 18 years!

With Arsenal drawing last night if United gain more points than Chelsea and Arsenal by the time they play us they will have already won the league. A real shame they couldn't have beaten Newcastle this week. That would have made the scenario odds on.

Houlier admited to hospital

Also, was looking at the table earlier.

If Arsenal & Chelsea win their 5 remaining games they will end on 79 points.

If Man Utd then win the other 3 games they have(as they would've lost to Arsenal & Chelsea in the other 2 of their remaining 5 games) they will also end on 79 points.

A 3 way tie going down to goal difference.

That puts into perspective the amount of pressure we, as fans, put on managers. For all his faults and as much as I don't think he's up to the job I wouldn't wish that, even to Kean. Get well soon Gerard.

I wonder how this news will affect Villa's players, galvanise them or meltdown?

Liverpool in line for a 25 million kit deal through Warrior Sports. The lucky basdages.

Jammy scouse gits!

Steve Kean who I understand is now responsible for everything to do with the club unfortunately hasn't managed to find a shirt sponsor for us next season yet. I can't understand it personally, after all everybody knows that we'll be in European competition the season after next.
