I'm just waiting for the flurry of articles from LFC and Utd supporting hacks lamenting the death of football at the hands of greed.

Funny, when they had the top positions sewn up and an ability to pay the top wages and unsettle other clubs players you never heard a peep.

The current financial climate could be good for football. With what is to happen today with regards to government talking about financial cuts. Football also has to take note and cut its cloth. If a player comes into a chairman office and ask for a £40k plus a week, they should tell the player to sod off. It is time for clubs to fight back against player power / wages.

We are all going to hear about the various financial cuts to hit the country - time is ripe for supporters to say to the players to cut their massivily obscene wages.

Straight on, I always laugh in their faces when manure or liverpool fans complains about having no funds to buy players. Didn't they just spent £7m on Bebe and £10+m for Meireles?

What a joke.

Not defending either club but those numbers are small beans. They aren't the going rate for top or even middling players. They're the going rate for the kind of mediocre players that are still well out of our reach!

Reemphasises just how little money we have in today's terms and how every season we remain in the PL on our current budget is an amazing achievement.

Its not quite there yet, but the steady decline of Liverpool and United, are certainly levelling the playing field slightly. Its a pity our team, is lacking quality in certain areas, because these are times where we can go out and win against them. They are vulnerable, but its just our players play against the name of the club, rather than 11 vs 11.

It's never been about watching the best players though, has it? they've always played in Italy or Spain. It's about a few better players playing in the most exciting and relatively even league in the world. It's been getting worse over the last few years as the richer clubs have monopoised not only the league but the cups too, but it's still a league where on their day anyone can actually beat anyone else and, unless you follow Rovers, it's still usually exciting.

Don't agree with this. Last two years through Real and Barca spending big - la Liga have come back into it but 2003-2007 the Prem was certainly the league with the best players. You only need to look at how Premiership clubs dominated the Champions League.

To be honest I would give up having the best players if it made the playing field more even. I am bored to tears with 'The Big Four' TNso a bit of financial instability shaking things up I am all in favour of. Gilette, Hicks and Glazer could have given the sport the best present ever - a bit of bloody competition.

Just need Abramovich to get a bit bored now, or something.

This is not meant to be provoctive-but how many times did Prem League clubs win it during that period?

I presume Liverpool's penalty win was then, but I also presume Manchester United's penalty win was after that?

To be honest I really couldn't give a toss about Rooney. Where ever he goes there's a good chance the sulky soft lad will be earning more in a couple of days than most who read this board will earn in a year. As for Utd, they only manage to keep the door open because of the huge revenue they generate and weakness in that and they are in for a good f'in. The whole league is a house of cards ready to drop - let's just hope we're in a strong position when it happens.

Disgusting to watch how Rooney has behaved, but it isn't anything that we should take pleasure in. If United can't hold onto their players then what chance do we have?

Not surprised to see Philip and a few others coming out with their usual nonsense though. As long as United have Ferguson they'll make it through these tough patches. Already with Hernandez they have a very exciting prospect to step in, I don't think we can start rubbing our hands together in expectation anytime soon.

'Disgusting'? Don't be daft he dumped on his home town club remember. Maybe after Ronaldo, Teves and now Rooney the Mancs are at last learning the lesson of 'those who live with the sword, die by the sword.'

Rooney..."The 24-year-old England international has also hinted that he is keen to find a new club because he is unsure whether United can challenge for honours in the future."

Eddie mark my words it's 10 green bottles at Lpool and MU from now on. The weak £, the New Lab tax on the high earners and the stupid borrowings have made these two clubs drop from the radar of the worlds top players. Now that the decline has started it will accelerate. Man Utd and Lpool will soon be left with their poorer players, the sick notes and the old timers.

The chickens are coming home to roost all over the Prem.

Just to take that one particular point, how long would you expect Ferguson to keep going?

He is currently 68 I believe.

Very good player. Also shows how crap a manager Rotation Rafa when it comes to his sides switching off when in the lead.

And can you remember when Spurs never won when he was playing! Admittedly he played full back then though.

69 I think. And he did say he would not be the manager when he was 70, although he has changed his mind before. Wonder who is/was the oldest top flight manager ever in this country?

Yeah, I'm sure one of the current crop of youngsters will turn out to be a big star for them... Ferguson does seem to have the knack!

We've never been able to hold onto our good players. Not that we have any really marketable assets currently.
