You cannot compare the relatively few fans that found out about our great club in the 90s to Uniteds glory brigade.

They have MILLIONS across this country, I have nothing against United, it's hardly their fault that whole towns of sad acts will buy their replica shirt whilst their local club struggles to pay the bills. They are (were) a superbly run football club from the manager upwards, a sporting phenomenon.

However, this is a once in a generation chance to see their vice like grip weaken.

It is just a shame that a couple of Billionaries are preventing the league from becoming competitive again.

Why can't you compare them? The numbers might be much more for United but only because their success was so much greater.

The principle is still the same.

If you saw a Rovers fan on here from, for a random example, Doncaster who got into us during the '95 season would you say the same? They might well have stuck with us through the relegation seasons but it's still supporting a Premier League club when they could be supporting their local club.

Well it depends if the ONLY reason he supported Rovers is because we won the title, then yes I would have every sympathy with the annoyance a Donny fan would have seeing the blue n white shirt instead of his own. Doesn't mean I won't welcome the fella's support- just like I am sure Utd fans welcome the Devon Branch to OT every other week.

But, ALL clubs have fans from across the country and indeed the world, usually a story behind it, from family ties, to something simple like lovimg the kit.

But the vast, vast majority of Utd (and LFC) fans pick that club because of their high profile and enjoy the reflective glory the clubs give them, the numbers of these sheep are so huge it distorts the whole game in this country.

Yes but there was also something to admire about United, albeit grudgingly. Yes they were at the top but they fully deserved to be there. They may have spent big but it was money accrued without the use of a sugar daddy. Granted they really came into the big league moneywise by floating themselves on the stock exchange, but it was something that any club could theoretically do and didn't rely on pure chance like getting a benefactor. It's also what led to them having Glazer as such a terrible owner mind you.

They may well have spent lots of money over the years but at each stage of their success they've had sides spending around the same as them (whether it was us, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool or Chelsea) and still came out well on top. Ferguson may be dislikeable at times but he's still a brilliant manager who showed his real class again with this Rooney thing and whilst I hardly like him, I'd take him over a Harry Redknapp any day of the week characterwise.

Any side that's successful will have plastic fans. Hell I'm sure some of the users on here are from far flung parts that got into us when we won the title. You'd never call them plastic fans since they've stuck with us since through thick and thin, but I think plenty of Man Utd's current fans would do too.

I always used to hate United, but since the likes of City have got these shady sugar daddies and their fans have showed themselves up to be classless pricks, it's hard to hold so much hate for a club with proud traditions who have been successful in the way that all the great clubs over the years have become successful.

I read once about how Man Utd marketed the team both in the UK and abroad. It was a pretty interesting read and you can see how they have turned success on the field to a world wide following. If I can find the article, I'll post it.

Unless he's had a significant increase in salary (200k+) Rooney needs to bin his agent after this fiasco, because he's been made to look like an absolute idiot and possibly burnt a few bridges in the process.

United fans are already making allowances for him, saying he was at a crossroads in his life, agent pulling the strings, he's a ###### but he's our ######, etc. Football fans are famously fickle and they'll be loving Rooney again in no time. They have no choice.
