In January, I see the need for a striker, an attacking creative midfielder, and a defensive midfielder. If Samba goes, we'll also need a CD. Olsen and Hoilett can handle the wings. Blackman deserves his chance and could add to a talented young strike force (M. Diouf, Kalinic, Blackman and a striker to be named). I don't count Benjani and I think Roberts will be sold as it is our only chance to get value for him in the transfer market.

Over the summer, we need to add another striker, a right back and a left back. The good news is that Roberts, Benjani, Salgado and Chimbonda will all be gone, in addition to possible others (Givet is allegedly homesick). This should create plenty of room on the wage bill, considering we are looking for youth which should cost a bit less.

Those are the three positions. May be more.

One benefit of promoting from within is that the new guy knows where the problems lie - and who the players are being considered.

So my estimate would be five or so arriving, but a couple of those being in the younger experimental category.

I meant his awareness of where his teammates are isn't the best, I'm sure he doesn't have 40 assists as well. But 40 goals in 54 apps is impressive in a relatively strong Turkish league.

I hope we buy a central defender if Samba is leaving, and that we for once do our shopping before we sell our priced assets. We could have course push Givet in the middle and play Olsson at left back but to me that is a significantly weakened defence, though Olsson does add his ability to attack unlike Givet. I really hope Samba at least gives it until the summer to see where the club is headed, his status in England is surely so good by now that he will have no problem finding a new club (Tottenham probably).

Do we still have the same scouts working for us Nicko? Probably still looking around France for talent I presume? Wonder when Xavier Pentecôte will return to action.

Same agents - checked in past few days and they are still pushing their players. Nobody sees bothered about Kentaro connection.

Funnily enough I think deals will go through quicker and have a better chance of success if a new approach is used. Got to say Rovers have been painfully slow in the past.

Anyway, that is just a theory. The pratice is something different.

There is money to spend - which not many can say in the mid to lower end of the table.

Any chance of Adebayor on loan? I see West Ham are interested and if the player lives in the Manchester area we should have a decent chance until the end of the season. He would be perfect for us I think, but perhaps not too realistic. Can't wait to see some names pop up, it will show us all the real ambition of our new owners.

Nicko can you confirm whether Kean has got the UEFA Pro license? I ask as it is a requirement that all PL managers need to have- media have not mentioned it but have not seen his name on any list.

Kean has got the full set.

In fact he was an SFA staff coach when he was 30-ish.

And he is a qualified 'teacher' who has been supervising David Dunn as he does his badge.

When he was at Fulham at first he was technically the 'manager' when he and Chris Coleman got their break. Coleman did not have a badge, Kean did and that was why they could run the team when Tigana was bumped.

You can only have one more Premier League loan. But as many foreign loans as you want.
