Their plan is to give him the season. I don't think they are panickers.

The Dave Jones thing was out last week. Silly chap told Chopra - to wind him up - that 'he would be at Blackburn before him' and the striker took him seriously.

True story.

Surely there is no way they can risk relegation though.

The options our subs bench yesterday was a clear indication of how weak we are yesterday....people where going on about his 1 sub - but who could we bring on to change the game? Diouf who keeps the ball? Benjani who didnt look interested last week?

So short of options.

We need 2 midfielders more than anything!!

Exactly. What do people think Kean should have done? Also, El-Hadji Diouf tweaked his hamstring in warming up, so he couldn't have come on (not that I would have recommended it, but the resulting ruck when Dioufy got mixed up with that Stoke lot could have been interesting ...)

Nicko is there any update to Kean appointing a new number 2? that could make a huge difference, someone like Clarke or Wilkins would be ideal.

No, but it is something that should be done very soon. I don't see any reason why Billy McKinlay is not approached right now. Steve Kean needs allies now.

I mentioned the need for a number 2 on another thread. The current situation is not ideal for our manager.

Just had a spare few minutes for the mind to wander...and check a few stats.

Here's a quiz question...how many points did Sam's side pick up this season compared to the SAME games last season before he was sacked?

Very interesting answer.

I suppose the counter argument would be that the teams we faced were tougher and Sam got most of his points against the sides in the bottom half at home, which i assume were in the second half of the season.

Edit- was it 18 points?

What possible basis did the new owners have to not trust Sam with their cash?

Kalinic, Van Heerden, Chimbonda, Jacobsen, Linganzi, Goulon, Di Santo, Benjani.

Nzonzi was excellent last season but has disappeared without trace this.

Salgado and E.H. Diouf have been just about ok but by no stretch of the imagination inspired signings.

Sam's record with a poor squad here was certainly to his credit. His record in the transfer market certainly was not.

In the 17 games this season he picked up 21 points.

In the same 17 fixtures last season - against the same sides [with two 'swaps' for teams who went up and down] - the total was 26 points.

So the 'point' is that this team and squad was five points worse off when he left compared to where they were a season ago.

Not Sam's fault...just a reflection of how the squad is weaker and, probably, that the opposition is a bit better.

but the squad sam put together went from the bottom three to mid table and was sitting pretty when he was fired.

When Sam left bolton their chairman came out and slagged him off saying sammy lee would play great football and get the fans flocking back. Sammy Lee promoted from within didnt quite work as planned and was fired. Bolton's gates continued to fall and havent recovered even with the success of coyle.

We have sacked sam and gone for a novice who will play exciting football. It didnt work then and i doubt it will now.

Newcastle got a lot of stick for firing hughton but at least they had identified his replacement. Venkeys sacked sam without a second thought what to do next.

I got slaughtered for suggesting you had left yourselves well short in the last window. 'Too good to go down' and all that kind of stuff.

And, by the way, would Sam really have got better results against West Ham and Stoke with the players missing that Steve Kean had?

Yes without a shadow of a doubt.

If it's true that the owners wouldn't risk Sam with their £5 million in January than that is ridiculous seeing as they are now risking their whole multi, multi million pound investment with the puppet manager they have in place.

Yes Exiled they do. Also... Niko also showed once again yesterday he can play, its just a shame our midfielders (especially Dunn) give him absolutely naff all. What do people seriously expect him to do when he gets NO service?

We still finished 20 points from the relegation spots last season...

what a ridiculous comment. The league is much tighter this season. For a start non of the three who came up are currently in the bottom three in fact non are below us.

When we sacked Sam we were sitting pretty. Having now replaced him with a dead duck (lame would be a compliment) we are smack bang in the middle of a relegation scrap

Apart from Kalinic, Chimbonda cost £1.5 million and the rest were freebies, loans or well under a million.

Even for a PL striker at £6 million you're always going to be taking a gamble, it doesn't even come close to buying you proven quality at this level.

His record in the transfer market was average, no better, no worse.

It's probable that we would have done a bit better with Sam in charge over the last two games but to be fair to Kean even Sam would have struggled mightily without Jones Samba and Roberts imo.

Of greater concern imo is the reaction of the players over the last two games and that hasn't been particularly positive imo.

I think having a total novice in charge who's never managed before and who has achieved relatively little in the game is of greater concern than our players being shocked by the upheaval and the decisions behind the scenes. Hell, there's been plenty of rallying calls from the players.

Performances have been bad after the pitch, but if you remove one successful manager and replace him with a rookie, the teams hardly going to be doing well on the pitch are they?

Irrelevant, they've all been either poor or a disaster.

So the amount of money a manager has to spend is completely "irrelevant" when judging how good his signings were?

So we expected Sam to be somehow acquiring freebies who are able to compete on one of the most competitive stages on the planet?

Yet more nonsense from the anti-Sam brigade.

Of course it's bloody relevant.

Of course it isn't.

If they're no bloody good, you don't bloody well sign them. It's not like wages are cheap even for a loan or freebie.

It's hardly rocket science.
