AggyBlue
I think 12 to 14 with a sell on clause may give Rovers something to think about. It's got to be dependant on the amount of cash VH are willing to invest this summer. If Sam is satisfied with the funds available there's no way he would consider selling Jones. I'm sure he will get asked the question at the next 'An Evening with' event in Blues.

Amo
Agreed....HOWEVER would you keep him until the summer?? Depends who we can get in January, because Roberts is our best striker. If we could sell him and sign Carew on the cheap, I'd be happy. Put the Venky's money towards signing Kranjcar or another decent midfielder. Exiled_Rover
Jone's isn't worth more than £10m. He might end up being, but right now he isn't. Some of the figures thrown around on here make me question the sanity of some posters. No he's not worth more than £10m, but why would we sell him for less than double that? He's an academy product, a local lad, a Rovers fan and a fan favourite. There's no need to sell him.
nicko
The Chelsea thing is pretty serious. I was puzzled by Ancelotti's quotes last week but made a call or two and found out there is a real interest here. Frank Arnesen's presence on Saturday was more than significant. Chelsea want the best young English talent and Jones clearly is way up there. I think there is a genuine chance they will bid in January. The fact they know that their major rivals are also circling will only add to their interest. The kid is true potential, the fact he got in the England under-21s at his age confirms he is the best of his type around. Miles better than Smalling or any of the other English players of that age group. People suggested last summer that there had been a bid - I was not so sure at the time, but since then I have been persuaded that Arsenal did ask the question and were rebuffed. Manchester United definitely like him too, but may not have the cash. So there could be a bit of an anxious Janaury ahead. An interesting start for any new owners too. broadsword
An interesting start for any new owners too. A rather ambiguous statement given your previous soundings that the Venky's takeover was very much done and dusted? Or am I reading too much into it? Backroom Tom Posted November 8, 2010 Backroom Share Posted November 8, 2010 I'm not anxious about it he's a talent no doubt but nowhere near as important to the team as say bentley was. In fact we'd miss out on a good prospect but hardly miss him at all at present as he's doing a decent job in midfield but no more than that. If we could sell him and use the money to bring in a bentley or krancaar and a good striker I'd be over the moon. Either we keep a good talent or we get an inflated price for someone who could be the next Jay Mceveley I'm happy.

S15
I'm sure the young lad realises that playing 1st team for us is 10 times better for him than doing say what Smalling is at United. £70m then is it Maj?

Although highly rated, Jay McEveley was not being courted by some if the biggest teams in European football. The situation is totally different. Ricky
Could be a nice easy way for Venkys to recoup 25% of their investment in one easy move
Amo
Jones is a great talent to have at the club but every player has his price. This team desperately needs investment in attacking options. If Venky's don't have the cash to do this, then perhaps sacrificing Jones is the answer. Just a thought.
ben_the_beast
I still think £20 million is much farer. The market is always inflating. He is 18. Dubbed as a future England captain. One of the brightest young English talents around. If it came to it then that is the minimum price for me. Why sell cheap when we could just keep him. I imagine if he is to go in January we will have clubs playing hardball trying to get their hands on him for as little as possible, taking us to the end of the transfer window and unable to reinvest in the squad. Sell big or he stays

I_saw_Batty_score
Not convinced "add-ons" are worth much these days when players can buy themselves out of the last part of their contract. Then they move clubs for no transfer fee but a sizeable wage hike and a signing on fee. Any percentage of a zero transfer fee ain't worth having. Iceman
i know he is a local lad, and a very good talent. However, would you turn down say Pavlyuchenko and Bentley or Krankjar for him? If that offer came up, then i would think that Sam would be considering it. This will only be an option, if Venkys dont give Sam much to spend. If however they do give Sam a good transfer pot, then there is no way we should sell Jones.
pick32
maybe jones is only worth 10million at the moment but smalling went for alot and he is no were near the player jones is. In todays market i would be gutted if we didnt push for atleast 20million, he is got to be worth more than santa cruz was ever worth.
T4E
Selling Jones is a no brainer for me. He's a very good young centre back, but he's only been on the scene for a year. He's playing in midfield because we're strong at centre back. If he hadn't progressed as he has over the last year we would be no worse off in terms of league position, either last season or this. If we could get £12m or more, he has to go. As the club that we are, we need to bring young players through and sell them for a profit while we still can. Losing Jones for big money would be more akin to the sale of Santa Cruz than Bentley in terms of impact on the team. It would also set an excellent example to other good young English players - come to Rovers, we'll give you a chance, build your profile and we wont stand in your way when a big payday comes knocking. It's the way we have to be, takeover or not.
Florida Rover
Is Jones as good as Rio Ferdinand was for Leeds?(To me yes he is)He was sold at £ 30000000 in 2002 at age 23 to manure. Why is Jones not in the same bracket 8 years later?I would not sell him but if he was to go I see no reason not to start at the Ferdinand number. nicko
I can't believe anyone mentioning Spurs fringe players as possible good signings. Did no-one see them getting trashed by Coyley's mob on Saturday? Kranjcar is a lightweight. Bentley doesn even get in a weak side. Both will be on monster money. If you ever sell Jones I hope you spend your money on better than that.

The far better comparison would be Ferdinand going to Leeds from West Ham when he was 22 for £18m. At that point he had been a full England international for 3 years. In this context, around £12m would be acceptable for Jones.
