I would LOVE to see John Carew in blue and white! If we're patient though, could get him on a pre-contract in January and for free at end of the season! :rover:

Am I the only one to have seen him play in blue and white, aged 17, on trial in the reserves? He looked very good on that occasion, creating a lot of scoring chances but fluffed the lot of them.

He's getting crocked and past it now so no thanks.

No. We don't want another 33 year old full back next summer. Kentaro will be supplying us with younger players.

Nicko, just seen your comment's about Roque's people offering him about. Is this on loan or a sale and if a sale any idea how much City would be after? Surely they'll do well to get £5m for him given his last 18 months! Any interest from Rovers that you know abou seeing as we need a striker. I dont know about most people but id love to see him back, providing he stays fit of course and the wages were right!

No. We don't want Roque back either. We no longer have Mark Hughes and his team to keep the player fit. Besides, Kentaro.......etc.

Ah but he is a left back and fortunately just in case we get desperate & funnily enough he can play at right back as well.

Have to agree, if we are getting some money to spend it would be nicer to get in some more youthful blood.

If we go about swooping at potential signings I think we'll just scare 'em off. No good ever comes of swooping except when busting drug rings or if you are a bird of prey.

On a serious note, this is exactly the sort of player that we can realistically attract. We pay relatively good money and he's on a free. Seems like a typical Sam signing, too. Might happen this one.

I can imagine Parsonblue saw him in the Reserves.

I saw him that weekend play for a youth team down at Brockhall.

Nonsense comparison. The economics of football aren't the same as they were 50 years ago.

I wouldn't get too sentimental about it, I doubt our prospective new owners will be too fussed when they eventually sell Jones that he's a local lad.

My concern is that plenty of our supporters don't seem too worried either.

I saw him, I seem to recall he hit the bar and then went down with cramp soon after. Vague memories of Donis helping him stretch his leg

Serious question - why? Presumably if we go down the club will be more reliant on local talent who are more connected with the fanbase.

Serious answer----- they'll be at the same level of local talent as we attracted and retained the last time we were in Div 3. If I'm JUST interested in watching local players I can stroll down to the nearest park.

I think you would have had a major job on your hands to persuade either of them to go..........especially as at the time they could not earn a penny more than they got already at Rovers. £20 p/w max wage at any English club applied.

Er-no it didn't. Certainly it was in place when they started their careers not after 1960--stand to be corrected on the exact date. When did Johney Haynes get his 100 quid a week?

Carew was on trial here?, that's new. I do wonder what a team of trialists we have shunned would look like.

Strikeforce would be:

Podolski Carew

I'm not sure it was exactly a trial.

I think Henning Berg arranged for him to come over.

My recollection was that he created a very favourable impression but as far as I can remember he thought he was too young to come and play in this country.

The maximum wage went in 1961-Gordon Taylor mentioned in his tribute to Ronnie Clayton today.

As he said, although he could have earned more elsewhere, he wasn't interested in moving.

Correct. He came through at Lørenskog were Henning is also from. Carew was over a few times and got offered a contract but opted to stay in Norway to improve his fluffé l'chance.

Bentley looked great tonight for Spurs, would love to have him in our team, he wouldn't come back though so it's never a possibility sadly.

Ironically. Bentley liked this area. He left because his head was turned at the wrong time, it was the time Ince was the manager. I met Bentley and Matt Derbyshire a few years ago and had a good conversation with both. Sadly though Bentley listens to his agent, his own ego. Until he starts to love football again and not the stuff that comes with the 'fame and fortune' He will not further his career further than a bit part player. If he forgets the glamour and goes back to football, he will be ok. But the question, only down to him is IF.

John Carew came here as a 16 year old and couldnt settle, Rovers and Kenny wanted to keep him!!!

He does appear to have got his confidence back. matured as a person a litle more. Yes I know he has been at Rovers before - but he has always had a raw potential, maybe he has at last realised that - the fact he has been playing a lot more must have helped him. It certainly helping Cardiff, is he not the top scorer in that divison at the moment. I think he has earned another crack at the top flight.
