"Manchester United are planning to make summer moves to sign Aston Villa youngster Ciaran Clark and Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones."

Nicko surely some mishtake?

Fergie likes Jones. As a centre half.

However if the kid is played in midfield it will be a sure way of keeping him at Rovers...

Really do wonder if Liverpool will now show a serious interest in Jones too...Carragher expects to be out for 3 months!!

Liverpool need a new centre half - among many other positions.

But will they trust Woy to find them?

Have my doubts.

Maybe they wont trust Woy...but Jones is a pretty safe bet considering the likes of Chelsea, United, Arsenal & City are all showing interest in him. Regardless of the manager he is fairly low risk if you believe the hype.

That article said that utd are going to spend 28mill on both but on a related article they've wrote that the villa player is worth 8 mill. Are they trying to say that Jones is worth 20 mill?

If NESV are calling the shots we can probably expect them to avoid expensive, young, unproven potential and go for experience, value for money and reliability

Season 2009/10

38 apps Roger Johnson - Birmingham

Paul Scharner - West Brom

37 apps Richard Dunne - Aston Villa

36 apps Carlos Cuellar - Aston Villa

35 apps Titus Bramble - Sunderland

It might not sit well with the Kop but the bottom line is players get paid whether they play or not.

Be interesting to see whether they can find the next Tony Gale or Ian Pearce.

That is the statistical approach they have taken in baseball, I think?

Oh how I would love the howls of protest from their fans if they become home to the leagues 'honest pros'. Because, of course, LFC and their supporters 'deserve' the best

Is an excellent centre half worth more to us than two £10 million rated players, especially up front and in creative midfield?

I'm not so sure...

Nope, especially if that excellent centre half is playing in midfield.

If £20m was offered it would really be a no brainer.

We have to remember that it's not only about the transfer fees, but wages also. From the top of my head I would imagine Jones costing us about £1M/yr at the moment in wages. Two £10M players from market would cost us £5M/yr in wages (£50k/w * 2). So if we assume that we'll have to sell Jones at summer 2012 because he wants to test himself at the highest level, we'll have saved £6M by keeping him until 2012 and not selling him now.
