Just play the system that suits the players you've got.

I remember seeing Wilshire in a pre-season tournament at the Emirates a couple of years back. He came on 2nd half, 16 years old and played on the left wing. Looked an amazing prospect then but would never have guessed he'd have been utilised in the role he is now.

Got to give Wenger credit there. The lad plays with the maturity of someone with 10+ years experience. His build and playing style remind me a lot of Dunny when he was young, although Dunny never had the brains to listen to Souness and adapt his game to be more defensive minded.

Parker, Young and Bent all proving their worth yesterday... funnily enough all players who most fans thought should have gone to the world cup.

When Wenger finally leaves Arsenal, I hope the FA do all they can to get him on board to teach the future kids of our nation.

Wenger is the perfect International manager and it would be a miracle if they got him thou. There are lots and lots of things to sort out in the back ground at the FA. Like still no blasted National Center of Excellence, still no true leader in the FA. Bowing down to the Premier League teams all the time, sending poor international teams to nearly all major tournaments due to the EPL.

Why can't the British pass and control the ball better than other nations ? and this applies to small children, through to grassroots, progressing on through to professional level, finishing at International level, WHY ?

If you keep losing the ball through bad passing how can England ever be successful.

Go and watch an Under 14 game or something this weekend. Listen to the parents on the sidelines yelling "GET RID!".

We don't have the culture of passing the ball over here. Hard tackling and 'safety first' is seen as more important than technical passing skills. I don't know how you can change that, it's so deeply engrained.

There is a faint glimmer of hope with players like Jack Wilshere and Josh McEachran. They joined their clubs at 9 and 8 respectively. We need to get kids into academies as soon as possible so that they can learn proper football skills before they're over-exposed to the culture of our "get rid!" junior leagues.

We were playing full size pitches at the age of 12/13. Looking back it's absolutely ridiculous.

Disagree. Arsenals intricate and exhilerating passing game is the result of Wengers football philosophy honed by many many hours on the training ground.

National managers are never afforded the amount of time necessary to mould a team as such. Far more important for a national manager top be tactically astute and more imp still for him to understand sports psychology and possess supreme motivational skills.

You're right. The rabid swinging from despair to hype starts again.

Wilshire and A Johnson look extremely good, like they might be able to become World Class. Carroll is interesting but a very rough player. Hart has a lot of promise.

Young, Milner, Cahill etc. are all decent enough.

All that is fine and so we do have a decent prospect for the future. But take a step back Matt Lawton! Compared to the German or Spanish youth are these guys - Wilshire and A Johnson possibly aside - even in the same ball park? The answer is clearly no. So why hype it?

Maybe two years down the line the likes of Smalling, Jones, Rodwell etc will have matured into really promising, potentially world class, players. But there is no guarantee of that, and it is so far away that it is hardly worth mentioning.

I've said for years that the England billy big time 'regulars' let us down every tournament and that imo an England 'B' team would have the hunger and drive to perform much better than the media and sponsors choice 1st X1. Germany proved that, they had a freshness about them that so many other teams don't possess. For me the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand and Terry should never be selected to play again. Their ability is fine their attitude is the problem, in fact they should have been culled after the abject failure to qualify for the Euro's in 2007. Playing for England isn't a great honour for them and that stands out a mile. How many 'world class' 18 year old prospects get to 23/24 and then once established go backwards? Those 4 certainly have and so too the likes of Owen, Joe Cole and Rooney. imo even Shearer's attitude deteriorated along with his effectiveness from his mid 20's on (although accumulated injuries certainly contributed). Attitude is everything and thats why I hold so much respect for the 'exceptions' of Scott Parker and Kevin Davies. Nearly men in international stakes but who would walk into any of my England teams..... until they too no doubt became comfortably established. There is no place in international football for players who are willing to rest on their laurels and live on their reputation and England have been the living proof of that for decades.

Cheers for the reply LeChuck, totally agree with what you say. After ten years or so of academies being implemented and the FA rolling out standard charter youth clubs why is it then that we still continue to struggle.

Is it our mentality and attitude to performing the simplest of tasks like passing a ball from a - b that we generally want to cover other areas like the field of sports science for instance, losing focus on the basic issues of the game, or is it that no one is too concerned just so long as you play with passion....the empty heads view of how the game is played WTF !

Is anyone else picking up rumours that Capello has resigned and that the FA have called a press conference for tomorrow morning?

Seems to have only been reported on Twitter so far, we'll have to wait and see.

If the FA are sensible(which by the looks of it, they are not) then Redknapp is the best choice to replace Capello. no chance in hell, that Sam would get the job.

Other factors in Germany's success perhaps?

The fact that they poach key players, how many of the current squad are not German nationals?

After all, it's a perk of being a land locked country, that has effectively had (Still has perhaps) so many transients pass through and / or stop over, and their airports are core European and International hubs?

Don't they have slightly different work permit rules also?

Aren't the nature of the clubs (And their ownership) also a key factor, they are still owned by their supporters and this has legislative protection, so if you're from an or in an area (With all the above factors)who would you want your son / nephew playing for, and is he more likely to be picked up by (Scouting wise?)

Also, is it fair to suggest that the German league is the biggest shop window in Europe? It's a good and stable competitive league?

Not really. They don't go around finding good players in other countries then turning them German. The likes of Özil, Khedira, Boateng, Klose all have one parent who is German and were born/lived in Germany since a young age. Even Podolski who has two Polish parents moved to Germany at the age of 2.

I think the only player to have been naturalised so that he could play for the national team - i.e. lived there for 5 years then got a passport is Cacau.
