chris Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 The odds were always going to be stacked against him. No PL assistant has ever made the successful step-up to manager. However, there's a first time for everything, and if Kean really does have Venky's full backing, he might just stand a chance. But he'll need to learn the ropes fast in this game, for his future and, more importantly, the club's. do you have any stats on first team coaches taking over rather then assistant managers. also you have any stats on ball boys taking over, I think they could be next if we lose a few more, apparently the ginger haired kid talks a good talk.

Technically Kean has been an assistant coach before, twice by recollection.
True Blue & White Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Is John Jensen really helping Steve Kean ? Yeah and he's proving to be as effective as his former team mate Nigel Winterburn.
imy9 Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 What's he had three games? I suppose that's enough time, suppose he should have led us to 5th by now lol
chris Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 At least Kean knows what is wrong and admitted it. I still think years of Walker Trust neglect is doing the damage because as soon as 2 key players (santa, Givet) are injured the back up is pretty shocking. He was forced to play Benjani or Diouf and Roberts was the best striker available, what does that tell you. Hardly Kean's fault.

Did he play empty head Bret Emmerton today ! if so, says it all about his judgement of a player and their capabilities.
chris Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Emerton had a good first half and when you see the goal it was pretty much his work Much better option then Andrews, although I am not a big Emerton fan either.
True Blue & White Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 What's he had three games? I suppose that's enough time, suppose he should have led us to 5th by now lol Kean said he wanted 9 points from the three games before Spurs, had he have got them we could have well be 5th (we'd be 7th at the moment level with Sunderland. So actually it's Kean himself and the fanboys that are seriously talking about 5th.

We've just had a transfer window with new owners who were going to spend whatever it took remember. Everyone was saying what a good squad we had on February 2nd.
92er Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 No PL assistant has ever made the successful step-up to manager. He wasn't even the assistant. Steve McClaren. I presume Topman meant at the same club.

Everyone was saying what a good squad we had on February 2nd. rather wait until the summer and not get ripped off, this season is a write off anyway now good strikers are not cheap, get some value for money don't want to end up with a Grabbi or Davies for 7 million do we.
Backroom DE. Posted February 5, 2011 Backroom Posted February 5, 2011 I like some of the football Kean has got our team playing, and it's more exciting to watch Rovers now than in a very long while. However, we're weak defensively and appear to be getting weaker. Kean needs to adjust his tactics to try and make us more robust in defence or we're going to end up with games like today and wednesday where we have enough chances to win the match, but lose it because we've conceded more than we score.

And with our strikers that is not something we should/can rely on. I love the attack, I feel it is the best form of defense, but we do not have the armor to bang the attack home. It's all well and good for the cavalry to harass the flanks and help supply good logistics, but you have to have the metal to utilize it. I don’t understand why he starts the strikers he does. Posters have said it before - Roberts is an impact player. He is the Old Guard; send him in to smash through the thin line when it has been weakened. Harass, harass, harass. Kalanic and Diouf should run the hell out of them for 70 minutes then bring him or Benji on.

We can still be attacking without leaving gaping holes in the midfield and piling pressure on our defence. Kean needs to adjust his tactics and adjust them quickly. Our players have shown they have the ability to play nice, attacking football. I just don't think we can afford to play this at the expense of our defensive duties. Some teams can get away with it, with our current squad we're not one of them and will lose more than we win if we continue as we are now.
booth Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Correct, we don't have the quality up front to take the "we'll score one more goal than you" approach. That's true, if we had someone like Gyan up front who gets a chance and scores we would probably be thrashing teams but Roberts, Benjani Kalinic and Mame Diouf just aren't consistent enough. With a decent strike force today we would have blown Wigan away in the first 30 minutes. It was them who should have had to chase the game.

Aye, even if Benjani had scored his header to make it 2-0 I think we would have gone on to win. However, for the second time in a week our lack of quality in the final third bit us on the arse and instead Wigan equalised and the rest is history.
philipl Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Just a question. Have we had a league match yet under Kean in which we have had 50% or more posession?
John Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 It is actually getting quite draining explaining how Steve Kean became our manager - is there a pre scripted response going around? Perhaps Bucky and Mrs D have got one
chris Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 It is actually getting quite draining explaining how Steve Kean became our manager - is there a pre scripted response going around? Perhaps Bucky and Mrs D have got one After a short career in the lower league, Kean has spent the majority of the last 10 years as assistant manager to Chris Coleman. Kean was assistant manager at Fulhum but due to poor results was sacked with Coleman. Kean and Coleman then moved to Real Sociedad but due to poor results both were fired again. Kean then moved to Coventry with his master Coleman but they we again sacked due to poor results. Kean gave up on the assistant Manager game in 2008 and became a First Team Coach. in late 2010 SA was sacked a rovers manager dispite a decent result. Some nutty owners didn't look at Kean's track record or experience but believed he worked hard and talked positive, this was enough to get him a 3 and half year contract. Still even though Kean's career with Coleman may look like a flop he is still unproven on his own so we all have to give him a chance even though opinion seems to be split.
DavidMailsTightPerm Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Just a question. Have we had a league match yet under Kean in which we have had 50% or more posession? Dangerous ground there considering the previous regime. I saw stats of around 48% for yesterdays match - about 10% more than it would have been under Sam. Come on it is a work in progress - we aren't suddenly going to become Arsenal with the players we currently have.
John Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Cheers Chris! Will do a copy and paste and send it round. Noticed my post got deleted, is Jerome still watching? Or maybe not...

If our possession under Sam had got down to 38% yesterday, would it matter if we won? Would we have conceded 4? There's the problem.
