dj54nna
There comes a point with most players when the penny does eventually drop. Look at Clough's great Forest team that included Larry Lloyd, Kenneth Burns and 'Rotund' Robertson. In their early careers, renowned 'bad boys', rough as the proverbial and capable of drinking any bar dry. There are always the exceptions who never change. Based on Barton's form and body language this season (apart from the MGP incident), I'd put him in the former category. And you'd be daft. It was quite clear from his interview on SSN on Saturday that he showed absolutely no remorse for punching Pedersen. He just blamed the media on picking on him because of his 'past actions'. Past actions that have usually involved hospitalising people. I don't care how good he thinks he is at football - he's a cretin and does not deserve to be anywhere near Rovers. JAL
Problem is, Newcastle don't want to sell, he doesn't want to leave, and has even said he will take a pay cut to extend his stay at the club. They publicly put out a statement in December saying that they would consider offers for Barton with talk of around £2m price tag.
67splitscreen
Practically 20 goals...if we only count league goals then Roque never scored 20 goals in a season. All of these at the top level: Ipswich 43(18) 41(16) 50(19) Charlton 44(22) 35(15) Spurs 36(8) - his only bad season 43(17) Sunderland 43(25) 25(11) Brilliant record. It's a total mystery to me why there's so many people who think Roque is a great player and who don't think Darren Bent is. I was not comparing the two as I think you know. The last two of those seasons at Ipswich were in the first division. Good striker no doubt and in his prime, would love him here.
Veevs
I would never pay £20m for a player that is not a England regular. He was crap at Spurs so Im just glad we dont pay silly money. Invest it on 3 really good players instead. If we get Rochina, Jones and Vazquez its really good. I think the Santa Cruz loan will pay off. In Santa Cruz, Kalinic, Mame Biram Diouf, Benjani and Roberts we have enough strikers. The midfeld is priority now! Just a small point on this one.. Mame - Loan so gone at end of season RSC - Loan so err yeah same gone at end of season Roberts - Contract ends in summer Benji - Err yeah same contract ends in summer (1yr extension available if that really counts) That leaves us with 1 out and out striker. Just a small point of course.. PS and trying too not go off topic but Bent is worth it.. he is oddly under rated imo and never understood that, he works hard, and is a goal scorer without question in the pl no matter what team he is in.. considering he has never had any proper supply (spurs days where before the midfield they have now) he is pretty damn good, does scare me if he ever gets into a team with a midfield... 30m per year for prem or spend 24m on a player too keep you there? If you work those figures out over full seasons he averages 19 goals a season. Close enough if you ask me.

I agree he is under rated - and when we debated this at work - struggled to think of a striker with such a good goal scoring record that has experience of EPL - and is available. However - £24m is just silly season - £15m tops for me.

I'm new to the site so please be gentle. If you forget this season as it isn't a full season yet that gives 55 goals over 4 seasons which averages out at 13.75 goals a season if my maths serves me correct. m1st
Right, can I just ask, for the people who would advocate Barton. Do you have no ethical line? Surely the fact he is a complete tosser should mean you don't want him here. We aren't talking about a bit of a bad attitude here ala Diouf, we're talking full blown criminal thug. You wouldn't p!ss on him if he was on fire, just in case he got up and broke your face. When the Barcodes signed Barton & Woodgate, a mate of mine who was a lifelong fan of theirs stopped following them and began to follow the Mackems instead. I couldn't go as far as becoming a dingle if we signed Barton, but I'd certainly think long and hard about following This Great Club Of Ours as avidly as I have for the last 50+ years if it stooped so low as signing a thug like him. 67splitscreen
He got 8 in 43 games in his first season with Rovers, 2 in 27 in his second season and 0 in 24 games and two years at Man City. No figures for Bent available but Roque's assists record is decent for a striker but hardly brilliant. And the primary job of a striker is to score goals - neither Roque or Bent are the Beardsley or Cantona style of players where they create a ton of goals. Darren Bent for £18 million is far, far better value than RSC at £18 million. 14 assists in the seasons I previously quoted above.
Rover & Out
either way Aston Villa are getting a striker who has consistently scored goals when given the opportunity in the Premiership. I wouldn't be surprised if he finished as their (Villa) top goal scorer come the end of the season. they may well have payed over the odds but Sunderland will do well to replace his goals, even with £18m+ to use. Wonderful using your logic we'll concede 65 goals this season. Perhaps to end this we should accept over the period I quoted he scores one goal for every 180 minutes he's on the park. Which is as good as any EPL striker I believe, close enough any way.
Valois
It was definitely publicised on the screens and in the papers. Those words above, can you link any of those to the incoming Jermaine Jones. Jones is certainly no angel, he has had a bit of controversy in his career, but compared to this - After breaking into the Manchester City first team in 2003, he quickly became a first-team regular and received an England U21 call-up the following year. But things began to go downhill for Barton in December 2004 when he stubbed a cigarette out in the eye of youth player Jamie Tandy’s during the club’s Christmas party. He apologized and was fined six weeks wages (£60,000). In May 2005 he hit a pedestrian while driving through Liverpool City Centre at 2am, breaking the man’s leg. Later that summer, Barton was sent home from City’s pre-season tour of Thailand after he assaulted a 15 year old Everton fan following an altercation. He was fined £120,000 by the club and ordered to attend anger management therapy. In 2005, he underwent a behavioural management programme at the Sporting Chance Clinic. Barton appeared to benefit from this but in 2006, he was investigated by the police for exposing his rear-end to Everton supporters following his side’s 1-all draw at Goodison Park. In 2007 he was arrested for assault and criminal damage following an argument with a taxi driver, but was later cleared. He attained national infamy that May when he assaulted team-mate Ousmane Dabo during a training session, inflicting head injuries and a suspected detached retina. Dabo pressed charged and Barton was handed a 4-month suspended sentence, 200 hours of community service, and was made to pay £3000 in compensation to his victim. As a result of the attack, Barton was immediately placed on the transfer list. The then Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce (of all people) signed Barton for £5.8m in the summer of 2007, and it wasn’t long before the fiery Liverpudlian was courting controversy again. In his first ever Tyne-Wear derby he went in high-footed on Sunderland’s Dickson Etuhu, prompting the News of the World’s cry to ‘ban him’. Barton later apologised for the tackle. His contrition was short-lived, however, as in December 2007 a drunken Barton was arrested in Liverpool on suspicion of assault and due to former convictions, was remanded in custody. The presiding magistrate said ‘I have to consider the safety of the public. You lashed out indiscriminately.’ And well might he be concerned; CCTV footage showed Barton punching a man unconscious then breaking a teenager’s teeth. He served 77 days of a six-month sentence and apologized, again.

But we havent paid that for Roque, his first touch is better than Bent, holds the ball up well and his link up play even on Saturday, playing people in to the game, with Kalinic alongside I think we will see a great pairing and he is a real threat in the air. Roverdale
Excellent Darren Bent discussion, I especially enjoyed the parts about potential Blackburn Rovers FC signings. Would read again, 8.5/10 Could NOT have put it better myself. All that has been established today in terms of BRFC signings is that Darren Bent isn't going to be one. I think we all deserve a big pat on the back.
nicko
Just a few brief updates. CHARLIE ADAM...Holloway has told all of his players today that he won't be selling anyone - because Blackpool can't buy replacements...that is very much his stance...Villa likely to make an improved bid...but unless the player goes on strike - which I doubt - this one may have to be shelved for all buyers until the summer. JONES...on huge wages at Schalke...but about to come on a share-salary basis on loan. ROCHINA...his contract at Barca is up in summer...so the 'hold-up' is presumably over what the fee would be now...may happen sooner...a bit like Larsson. SAMBA...hear rumours of some drama going to happen there this week...and the outcome could be a surprise. WARNOCK...Villa still trying to sign his replacement...I don't think he will come back to Rovers the way things stand. STEVE KEAN'S TRIP...I would expect there may be some news out of that very shortly...no surprise if he signed his deal...the owners have said often enough. Roverdale
PAINFULLY slow.. if we miss out on Rochina 'waiting' until the Summer I will be devastated. Nicko am I right to understand you don't think VV is coming at all? Or do you just not happen to have any news on that front? To be honest he is the player I am most excited to see in a Rovers shirt from all these rumours.
