John Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Kean said he still expects to sign 2 players but refused to put a timeline on it (said process is on-going). So far our business has been decent however there is a pretty big risk on relying Santa Cruz to stay fit, something he has failed to do for most of his career - if you take into account how much we will be paying him, the value of that signing is questionable - if he can stay fit then great obviously. In Jermaine Jones, he appears to have all the attributes to be a success in the PL however I (like most others) have never seen him play before, or heard of him therefore looking forward to seeing how he gets on.

philipl Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Why would we bid for formica? Surely red star do that Perhaps because we want him to play for Rovers and have our club enjoy the benefits of future transfer prices were he to move on? Besides which, Red Square Belgrade have gone bust twice in recent seasons so who is giving them the money to make the purchase on our behalf? However, it looks like all this deal engineering is falling flat on its face and Rovers have lost a leading position in trying to sign Formica. Let's get John Williams back in charge of transfers- at least he could land a player when we chased with a bit of money unlike what is happening this window.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Good point. How we manage transfer activity should not be rocket science. It should be basic bloody commonsense. Many think it could have been done much better this window. First statement should have been 'we will always be on the look out for opportunities to strengthen our team'. Full stop, all that was needed. Instead, a budget is mentioned which doesn't seem to be widely understood generally and all sorts of names are mentioned Ronaldinho, Duff, Adam etc etc. Gets the supporters all hyped-up and likely disappointment will follow. If I was a betting man, which I am, I would bet on Rochina landing for £1m and that's the lot, unless Big Chris ends-up at Arsenal. On the bright side, win today and we are seventh. Off for lunch and a few bevvies and then on to the match where I confidently predict we will breeze it 3 or 4 goals to 1. Lose today and we're right back in it. A vital game for us today.
aXept Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Perhaps because we want him to play for Rovers and have our club enjoy the benefits of future transfer prices were he to move on? Agree! And Kean said he wanted this player so why loan? And he had seen him play and said he was a fantastic player... His word...
Exiled in Toronto Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Let's get John Williams back in charge of transfers- at least he could land a player when we chased with a bit of money unlike what is happening this window. Perhaps he's been busy still closing in on that mystery striker
imy9 Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I know the one you mean... Using the Benni money we had.
Tim Southampton Rover Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Perhaps because we want him to play for Rovers and have our club enjoy the benefits of future transfer prices were he to move on? Totally agree. I could understand if the player was worth over £10m and on huge wages but he can be bought for around £3m and would be on peanuts compared to most Premier League players, which is a gamble worth taking. If anything, he's already got a big reputation in South America so even if he was a flop, we'd probably get back most of the money spent. If he is a success then we could also make a mint in the future if we sell him and we also get to see a top quality player wear our shirt each week. The positives definitely outway the negatives. Sort it out Venky's before it's too late!
47er Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Rovers already have two loan players (mama diouf, RSC) from the prem, so could not go for a Ireland on loan. Rovers also needed a striker, hence RSC coming in. That's my point! Central mid-field should have been the priority!
dj54nna Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Perhaps he's been busy still closing in on that mystery striker The only person working on that was Andy Cryer. It was a complicated yarn deal designed to sell papers.
Guest linganzi Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I don't doubt we should just sign him old school. But that's not what's happening. So if red star are signing him as such, not us, they need to bid so we can borrow him
my_name_is_Earl Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I wouldn't bother signing any more players in this window to be honest. With the players we have already coming back and the two new acquisitions both of whom have directly strengthened the first team, I think too much activity would disrupt the squad. Besides which, I don't want us wasting money on average players. The only signing which I wouldn't mind is Sebastian Larsson, not sure how much anyone else has seen of him but if he had a longer contract, he'd be going for about six million, I reckon. Fabulous engine and a great distributor of the ball, he would definately improve our squad.
alexanders Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 would there be an issue concerning work-permit for Formica?
Tim Southampton Rover Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 would there be an issue concerning work-permit for Formica? I believe he has an italian passport so wouldn't require a work permit.
vintageadidas Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I have just received a text from someone saying we have recently watched and are considering a bid for Diego Castro.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 That's my point! Central mid-field should have been the priority! You can see it, I can see it, 75% of Rovers fans can see it ! The powers that be can't.
tony gale's mic Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I've never seen Formica play, but if he's so good why is he being linked with Red Star Belgrade? They have a fairly illustrious history but are a nothing club in a nothing league these days.
Sverre Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 According to a Norwegian TV-channel we are interested in Simon Vukcevic, from Sporting Lisboa. The guy is an offensive midfielder, with great technical abilities. The article says that he should be available for around £6 million.
Darwen Rover Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 My personal opinion is I dont want us to buy anyone that compromises Hoilett and Ollsons playing time... I think these two have cracking potential (along with Jones obviously)... We should be in for OHara from Spurs... Exactly what we need
Eddie Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 O'Hara is crocked, I'd much rather that we went for krancjar
DaveLad Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 If i was Steve Kean i'd be on the blower right now to Harry... http://www.spurs.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=7507269 -DL

Steve Moss Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I said at the start that the time to judge the manager and Venkys would be at the end of the window, we are close to it now so IMO: 1. As long as our key personnel are with us after the window shuts it has been a hugely successful window. 2. Jones and RSC have addressed areas that are weak for us and with Grella, Nzonzi and co back from injuries we are virtually at full strength- a big positive heading into a key period in the season. 3. If we win today we go 7th and I will confidently say that Kean has done a good job so far. 4. I would rather wait til the summer to purchase Rochina, Vasquez and Larsson for ZERO transfer fees rather than pay £3 million plus now, there is no urgency. 5. Unless things have changed purchases are still conducted by JW, even if targets and money is supplied from others? This is all very sensible. All positive indications that we'll stay up. On the other hand, we desperately need a play making midfielder. If Venkys are serious about finishing 8th this season, they'll get one ASAP and stop playing these third party loan games. Ronaldinho, Beckham etc-------overthehill 30+------That's wasting money.Venkys don't mind wasting money, they just want to waste it in the wrong direction! To improve the team, yes I agree thet it is the wrong direction. To maximize their advertising possibilities, I disagree. Beckham and Ronaldinho wearing a Venkys' sponsored Rovers shirt would have done wonders for their name recognition.

Cracking player on his day though!
alexanders Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Both Vukcevic and Castro would be to good signings. I have been touting Vukcevic since he fall out of favour in Sporting.
