After today its fairly clear that we need a RB, LB and a creative, passing midfielder. If we get three solid transfers in those positions, we will be challenging for top 6.

Is that just for this window? Because we'll be needing a few strikers in the summer, as well!

Yes. And agreed.

While I'm spending Venkys' money ( :P ), we should lock in Jermaine Jones, RSC and M. Diouf now. I've seen enough to think that this team can gel and achieve things, if only Europa spots and cup finals. Kalinic was very good today with RSC.

So if Venkys can see its way clear to signing a midfielder (might I suggest Kranjcar), a RB and LB, it would be greatly appreciated. If you need room on the wage bill, get rid of Roberts, Grella, Andrews and Salgado (though I admire him greatly he's not long for the league).

I watched this guy closely today and was not impressed. IMO, certainly not box to box and on this evidence, not a great range of passing skills; also, looked one pace and prone to the rash challenge - how the hell we got away with the penalty that wasn't, I'll never know.

Not as good as Nzonzi and I'm certain we could do better.

I thought Jones looked good, like a better version of Grella.

To me we look like a team just one player short of being a very good team, come on Venky's give us an attacking midfielder.

Jones has not played a competitive game since October, he is bound to be rusty, he tackled well overall and played done decent passes, will be an asset once he gets his match fitness, I am sure he was told to sit in front of the back 4, as Dunny was playing at the top of the diamond formation.

Agree! But much better version of Grella. My opinion!

And yes, give us an attacking midfielder! :rover:

Glad you can make such an assumption based on ONE GAME, which we won, may I add.

Jones looked good to me, if obviously a little raw. As a holding midfielder, he isn't going to make any headlines for his performance, but he gives that pressure in midfield we've lacked for ages.

I watched highlights from the german league last night and mario gotze from dortmund looks exactly what we need playing behind the front men, dont have a clue how much he would cost as ive never heard of him before seeing him last night.

I watched him closely too and thought he played well. Fairly quick and decent engine when you consider he hasn't played competitive football in so long, so I'm sure those aspects will improve. Decent tackler, shrewd and accurate passing play. Lucky with the penalty though.

Of course he didn't look box to box, we were playing a diamond. Why would he be box to box? The way he stopped following the attack he started and settled in place in the middle of the pitch demonstrated he was following orders to play the holding role.

if we could JUST get, an intelligent and creative midfielder with a normal amount of pace and fitness, our team would be so much better. I couldnt vcare less about attackers, right backs or whatever, throw in a real playmaker and our team would be instantly improved, by quite a margin.

regarding the jones debate, he was, to me, average today.

But how can anyone judge a player on one game? It was his first game in English football, he played well considering the circumstances.

Are you sure you were watching the right player? He was wearing #2, in a :brfc: shirt. Comfortably the best central midfielder at the club already.

Maybe he thought it was Pedersen.

He looks the real deal. (Jones)

Added grit to the midfield. Something we have lacked for a long time. He will be very important for the rest of the season.

It occurred to me reading the recent posts, that what happens to MGP if we get a true creative midfielder in the squad? Does he stay a starter? If not, perhaps something is in the works which is effecting his morale? I've grown to expect better of him in recent months.

No inside track. Just wild speculation on my part in effort to figure out why, in my opinion, he was so poor.

Jones did exactly what he was suppose to do and did it well! I think alot of people watch football with out totally understanding the game!

Is it bad of me that i actually want to slap some of the posters on here? What are you guys on about? Jones is what we have been missing for 2-3 seasons. Just need a right back as cover for Salgado and replacements/competition for Dunn and Pedersen.

Game of opinions and that's what makes it so good. Certainly, there were mixed opinions about Jones where I was sat and it's the same reading the MB. Appreciate it's his first match but very often, first opinions, as with most things in life, tend to be right. I always recall seeing that 'renowned, great' centre forward, John O'Mara, that we signed from Brentford. Folk said wait till he settles - well, we waited, waited and waited!

Thought Jones was excellent today. They say you make your own luck and he certainly did with the "penalty" incident, which was a penalty. He was disciplined and played a simple passing game. You can't really ask for more from the base of a diamond.

Back on topic - any transfer news today?

You are right about forst opinions sticking, mine is that he was a class above anything we have in midfield. Looks like what we have been missing for years, the way he potected the defence was epic and you could see the freedom he gave Samba to wander foward. Once he beds in we'll have some player.

Disagree strongly.
