Kelbo Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I don't know whether this deserves a thread on it's own or not but I have a genuine talking point I'd like to raise. Last season, Owen Coyle was lauded because he got Burnley promoted and was doing pretty well with them. He got poached by Bolton. Ian Holloway has got Blackpool promoted and is doing pretty well with them. He's not likely to get poached by another Premier League club is he? What's the difference? Apart from the length of their careers and Holloway's penchant for coming out with hilarious turns of phrase and a few rants, what is the difference between the two of them? Owen Coyle got the credit for Burnley's success and the way they played. Charlie Adam seems to be the one most talked about at Blackpool but they play the same kind of attractive, attacking football as Burnley did. I wonder how much of it is Holloway... Oh, I don't buy the idea Holloway's an idiot by any stretch of the imagination, I think he is a pretty smart cookie. He is smart and has been around the block a bit too, dont let him fool you and if you met him you would find he really is a warm and wonderful person. for me he's like a breath of fresh air to football.

LWX Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I think it's great for the prem and a tribute to the northwest that the famous tangerines are up with us... bring back preston, oldham, yes... and the dingles, it's great to have proper derby games. (I know I might be alone with the burnley sentiment!?!)
Tim Southampton Rover Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Ian Holloway to resign? Premier League fined Blackpool for weakened team.
Guest linganzi Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Said he would resign if fined. Well they have been so he best move on
SAS Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Looks like Blackpool should be looking for a new manager....
Boltinho Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 True:?? Blackpool fined £25,000 by Premier League for fielding weakened team vs Aston Villa. Holloway threatened to resign if fined. Your move, Ian.
Dunnfc Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 True:?? Blackpool fined £25,000 by Premier League for fielding weakened team vs Aston Villa. Holloway threatened to resign if fined. Your move, Ian. He won't he's all mouth and I'm bored of his hot air... Was a breath of fresh air at first but he's now just an irritationg moaning @#/?, although its doing the trick in keeping the spotlight of his team.
Ozz Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I'm sure all the Blackpool fans appreciate the virtual pat on the head everyone keeps giving them.
Radagast Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I'm sure all the Blackpool fans appreciate the virtual pat on the head everyone keeps giving them. Hmmm, I think that's more of the media at large's attitude than most on here. Speaking for myself at least, it's just good to see another town club proving (so far) that they've got what it takes to compete at the top level. That they're doing it with a bit of style is even better. I wish Wigan well for the same reasons (minus the style part).
King Kenny's Magic Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 Said he would resign if fined. Well they have been so he best move on Yup,he's going to look very silly if he does nothing. Maybe the pennies dropped that you can't dictate terms to PL chiefs when you've only been a premier league manager for 2 months. Only the big guns can do that, not the Leicester City F.C. Hall of Famer.
Mattyblue Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Aye, know your place Blackpool. Only Man United et al can make 11 changes to their side.
Backroom Tom Posted January 27, 2011 Backroom Posted January 27, 2011 Let's see if Holloway is a man of his word or just likes to whine on whenever given a mic
67splitscreen Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I heard that the threat to resign, he retracted that several weeks ago citing his comments as being in the heat of the moment. Probably had been told of the likely outcome.
King Kenny's Magic Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 Aye, know your place Blackpool. Only Man United et al can make 11 changes to their side. Only the big boys(top 5) have the quality in the squad to do so. When Blackpool et al do it(especially with ten changes) then it severely weakens the team which makes them less competitive. Could you say the same for the top boys? No.
Guest linganzi Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 When he made the changes it was because he was saving the squad, he fully expected to lose, it was just again the time that we were realising bpool were doing something and villa were rubbish. A stronger side and they would have won. Selecting from a squad is,one thing, picking a weak squad and quitting before kick off is another . Holloway was as surprised as anyone when they nearly got something
Mattyblue Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 You pick a 25 man first team squad squad that is registered with the Premier League, but you can't pick who you want from that list? Ususal double standards.
cn174 Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Selecting from a squad is,one thing, picking a weak squad and quitting before kick off is another . Holloway was as surprised as anyone when they nearly got something Thing is, if they'd have hung on for that draw, would there be all the fuss. Matty is right, what is the point in saying you must choose 25 players, if you can't pick out of those 25 to play a game.
True Blue & White Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 So who's favourite for the Blackpool job seeing as Holloway is set to resign..presumeably

Ricky Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Yet when arsenal or manchester united make 9 or 10 changes it's acceptable. I just fail to see the sense in asking clubs to submit a squad list if you can't use that squad.
RovertheHill Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 I like Ian Holloway and I like Blackpool. I'd rather they were in the premier league than someone like Cardiff or Leeds or Millwall. However, I think he's in grave danger of doing a Phil Brown at Hull - going from being lauded and respected for getting them up and taking some big scalps to being a liability
Guest linganzi Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Yet when arsenal or manchester united make 9 or 10 changes it's acceptable. I just fail to see the sense in asking clubs to submit a squad list if you can't use that squad. The big clubs could field 2 or 3 top sides each. Holloway was just resting first teamers replaced with second rate reserves. It's an abuse of this squad rule
Parsonblue Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Selecting from a squad is,one thing, picking a weak squad and quitting before kick off is another . Holloway was as surprised as anyone when they nearly got something Ultimately, it was the Premier League who introduced a 25 man squad, with younger players added when and if required. The Premier League can't have it both ways. In naming 25 players, clubs are saying that these are the players who will play in Premier League matches. The actual 11 who start a game must be left to the manager. This is another example where the Premier League simply make themselves look stupid. The introduction of the 25 man squad completely negates the rule that the League are now fining Blackpool under. Unless the Premier League are going to state which players in the 25 man squad are deemed not to be senior players - and somehow I can't see them telling Wenger or Sir Alex who to pick - they can't complain about teams that are actually selected. It doesn't matter if it's Blackpool, the Rovers, United or Arsenal in terms of the quality of the 25 players in the squad. The rule is that 25 players have to be named and therefore those players are deemed good enough to play in Premier League matches. The rule is the same for everyone and all Blackpool have done is use their squad in the same way that Arsenal, Chelsea and United do. Hopefully Blackpool and Holloway will stay up this season and illustrate just what a pathetic body the Premier League really is.
Guest linganzi Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 If rovers lined up Fielding Hanley Gunning Ramm Lowe Chimbonda Andrews Emerton Goulion Benji Roberts At villa away, its within the rules, but its an abuse of the rules The result is academic.
Mattyblue Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 We would have every right to field that side. United could do it with Kuzcack Brown O'Shea Evans Neville Fabio Gibson Macheda Obertan Bebe Owen Much weaker side, giving their opponents an advantage they would not normally gain- but are United in their rights to do it? Absolutely. Would they get fined if they did? Not a chance!
