Didn't realise it was Mark Knopfler night on BBC Four.

SAMBA...Money for nothing?...has got a rise in his new deal, but it's not a daft one...all of that fuss over about £5,000-a-week rise...still a local hero.

LARSSON...Could be off to Cullercoats and Whitley Bay...Newcastle have come in...made a new offer to Birmingham...and a good offer to the player that may be better than what he can make at Rovers...interesting one.

DIOUF...Won't be going abroad because he wants British citizenship...so that's Turkey totally out...West Ham still in hunt...West Brom not after landing Vela...Why worry?

A rise of £5k a year would do me.

Do Senegalese have to do over 10 years in the UK then.

Larsson- good player but not a priority with Hoilett progressing well, I am more concerned about a creative midfield player.

Re Knopfler- Did he send you to sleep ? He should have quit after " Sultans Of Swing ". At least it's good news regarding Samba.

He should have quit before!

Do you think the extra £5k a week was Samba's only aim, Nicko? You said at the time that Samba wanted out, and has done for some time. What's changed? We've done well in the transfer market and, more importantly, on the pitch. Is that the main reason behind the change?

This January is shaping up pretty well!

New players in possibly addressing our midfield issues, our best player messing about for a new contract which turns out to be just another 5k a week and we're playing some good football all the while.

Isn't that rise more than what the Prime Minister earns? Still, in Premiership terms, we can definitely handle that, relief to hear it is 'so small'. Also perhaps points to the possibility that it IS about more than money. He complained about Venkys not having met the players in person, and apparently he recently met one of the Rao brothers, who presumably gave their vision. Perhaps this appeased him a bit. Hope the contract is longer too.

Of course, if you wanted to be a sceptic...he will have got a signing on fee too, who knows how big, the club may have told him they're not selling him this window because nobody is bidding anywhere near enough, and he may intend to repeat this whole saga again in a year or less...I'm hoping the optimistic version is true.

Good news about Samaba staying. If Larsson goes to Barcodes maybe a cheeky bid for Barton? Not everyones cup of tea, granted, but if Diouf leaves, who is going to be our "bad boy"?

Nobody, would suit me just fine. But I expect J. Jones might be up to taking the mantle.

Had this from someone who actually works at Brockhall and Ewood Park and is partial to genuine information, though whether you choose to read anything into it is up to you:

Samba - Will be an Arsenal player before the end of the transfer window.

Formica - Was in Monaco yesterday morning, then being given a tour of Ewood Park by the evening. Will happen.

Young Brazilian lad - Looks ok, but nothing special. 50/50 as to whether we actually offer him a deal.

Jason Lowe - Joining Aberdeen on loan until the end of the season after tomorrow's game, which he's apparently playing in.

Completely irrelevant and has no meaning, but I actually drove past some Venky's person this afternoon, in a black Audi with a 'VENKYS' reg plate - just by the Havelock pub.

You should have phoned the police, that number plate is illegal.

Don't know if it was literally 'VENKYS', but whichever numbers/letters used, it was clearly spelling Venky's/

His dad? Jesus, pushy parents

nicko do you think we have other midfielders lined up if formica deal failing

Formica should happen. The passport issue should not wreck the work put into this in the past few days.

There is a very good story behind how he was snatched.

But that has to keep for Sunday.

His dad's an ex-pro who runs a pub in Dundee, I think. Not that this changes anything.

Would think Liverpool are far too busy with the Torres panic to sign Adam now, although rejecting a £6.5m bid should be enough to put any of his suitors off.
