rebelmswar Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Plus, who is going to take the responsibility of the slow substitution walk off? I swear we should have retained Tugs just for that very reason. The man could bleed at least five minutes from the clock. I am sure I once saw him walk over to the linesman to shake his hand before even looking for the ref.

Steve Moss Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Holloway allegedly insults Adam, telling him he hasn't played well enough to earn a move. http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Blackpool-Ian-Holloway-Charlie-Adam-risked-further-alienating-star-midfielder-claiming-has-not-played-well-enough-to-earn-move-article687373.html Once upon a time, I thought Holloway as a good mental. I'm beginning to think he's gone round the bend.
McRovers Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 i'd tend to disagree with the kalinic naysayers, i think something crucial has happened since novemberish on the kalinic front. its not just that hes scored a couple of goals, its that his overall form has picked up a great deal since this time last year, we've started to see glimpses of a real football player. i think hes looked more dangerous but also looked more useful when we're off the ball or defending too, whereas previously he'd tend to just stand about doing frig all until he got given the ball. there is a correlation with steve kean's arrival and implementation of a more attacking style of course, but i'd argue that more than this its just taken the lad an unusually long amount of time to gel with his team mates, english football, whatever. i also think the influx of new players will also have a positive effect on the lads game, taking the onus and thus the pressure off him to be this new kid on the block talismanic £6m one man strikeforce future of croatian football. anyway, just my tuppence, don't forget that this season hes got roughly a 1 in 3 goals return, which is not too shabby. i think i'm gonna stick a fiver on him to have >10 league goals by seasons end (4 at present) and then we'll see!
Steve Moss Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 ^ I agree with all of this. Kalinic is quality and will continue to improve.
RoversSG Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Agree on Kalinic, he's no longer falling over everytime he gets challenged. Think he's probably being working on his upper body strength and we're seeing the results. I remember it was the same for perdersen when MH made him spend half a season building up body strength before fielding him regularly.
FourLaneBlue Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Perhaps we should be looking at this transfer window and comparing it with others we have experienced. Here are our Transfer Window dealings over the last five seasons. Season 2006/07 IN - Chris Samba, Bruno Berner, David Dunn, Stephen Warnock OUT - Lucas Neill, James McEveley, Joe Garner VERDICT - This transfer window has to be viewed as a huge success. 400k for Samba? Bargain. Swapping Neill for Warnock was a great bit of business as well and Dunn mk 2 has been a success, albeit with at times fluctuating form. Was this the last transfer window that the Trust backed the club? RATING - 9/10 Season 2007/08 IN - None that I remember. Vogel was brought in slightly later. OUT - Robbie Savage VERDICT - Savage, after a bad injury, was suddenly past his best. Therefore, in purely black and white terms, it does not appear to be too bad of a window, but in reality it was probably the worst we ever had. Hughes was unable to bring in a replacement, rumoured to be Lassana Diarra from Arsenal, who instead went to Pompey for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £5.5 million. They sold him to Madrid for 20 million Euros, about 18 million pounds. Not only that, but was that the beginning of the end of the Hughes Years? He certainly didn't seem his happy self afterwards. Furthermore, we weren't that far off the Champions League places even in January! We finished a respectable 7th in the end but missed out on Europe. Pompey went on to win the FA Cup. So, this was the transfer window that meant Hughes leaving was even more inevitable that it had been before. RATING - 2/10 Season 2008/09 IN - El-Hadji Diouf, Gael Givet (loan), Yıldıray Baştürk OUT - Matt Derbyshire (loan but permanent in the summer), Eddie Nolan, Sergio Peter VERDICT - A successful window on the whole, with Diouf and Givet playing roles in leading us away from relegation. Baştürk was a disaster who barely played but was on a free. After losing Bentley and Friedel the previous summer though, Ince had only made one good signing in Robinson, and that took quite a while to really work out. Think we could have used Derbyshire until the end of the season, but the money was too good to turn down. RATING - 7/10 Season 2009/10 IN - Amine Linganzi OUT - Benni McCarthy, Elrio van Heerden VERDICT - McCarthy might have been past it but we got some decent money for him (over 2 million) and didn't bring a striker in. It worked out in the end but it was a worrying vision of how the Trust were not going to spend on the team anymore, even when not far from the relegation places. Linganzi was given a 3 and a half year contract but has barely had a look-in. As for van Heerden, don't think he even played in the Prem once. Not happy times. RATING - 4/10 Season 2010/11 IN - Roque Santa Cruz (loan), Jermaine Jones (loan), Mauro Fórmica, Rubén Rochina OUT - El-Hadji Diouf (loan), Amine Linganzi (loan), Pascal Chimbonda, Alex Marrow, some other loans out VERDICT - Well, what can we say? It's too early to judge in full but many on here, including myself, were saying that Venkys should be judged at the end of the window. I have to say that first impressions are very good. We have actually bought some players...and in Fórmica paid a decent sized fee! We have been crying out for central midfield reinforcements and we have two. Mauro could be the attacking creativity we have had to rely on Dunn for. Is Jones a belated replacement, eventually, for Savage? Santa Cruz is a quality forward although I do hope we are not paying too much of his wages. Rochina looks a talented prospect. None of those leaving will be missed too much, and without Diouf and Chimbonda we might not be quite so hated any longer. Perhaps Fleet Street and the media pundits will give us some credit. Hang on, perhaps not... RATING - Far too early to say, but signs look good this could be closer to 2007 than 2008. Optimism is returning to Ewood. Pleasantly surprised.
neekoy Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Very good however you didn't include the losses of Bentley and Friedel in the losses which makes 07 or 08 a complete 0. EDIT: Robinson is included either in the INS

alexanders Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Norwegian TV2 raving about rovers transition and think we did great in the window. Exciting times at Ewood they say.
LeftWinger Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 ^ I agree with all of this. Kalinic is quality and will continue to improve. Kalinic has scored 12 goals for Rovers – with 11 of those coming either at Ewood or in the midlands. The only other came at City. If we do ever sell him, I think we should let him go to Villa seeing as he’s scored a third of all his goals at Villa Park.

That would be a bad idea because we play Villa at least 4 times a season and he will come back and haunt us

Lancs Rover Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I would guess Roberts got a contract extension as a loyalty reward after the whole Big Sam episode. He can obviously be trusted to run through a brick wall for the manager if required to do so. (Just extrapolating from my own experience of how companies work). Which brings me on to my main point. One of the winners in this transfer window are the Venky's. Cynicism seems to be diminishing, in particular with regard to their intentions to financially back the manager. I also think there might be a cultural difference here. Perhaps if you make it big in Russia or the US, you feel the need to be ostentatious, tell everybody how much money you have got and throw it around a bit to prove it, transfer fees, wages, big infrastructure investment plans. What do we have here? A group of people who have kept in the background whilst the real business was done. No-one really has a clear idea of their wealth. We have to take them on trust. They have showed loyalty (whether it's misplace or not isn't the point) to a manager in terms of a contract and back-up in the transfer market. (He might or might not be a 'Yes' man. But frankly, who cares if he does a job properly and we see the results. We're all 'Yes' men, for the matter. Just a matter of degree.) They are obviously new to the media-spun 'image-maker' game and have screwed up. There's a creditable side to that ,too. Steve Kean or Harry Redknapp? Hmmm. No contest really. We are a town club without pretentions. And personally, I like low-key, family style owners who appoint a manager who - I can imagine - gets passionate about how training cones are laid out. This is just the purest of speculation. But if these people were absolutely minted and could buy out most clubs in the Premiership, I'll bet they are the sort who wouldn't let on about it. And I have a hunch that this scenario isn't too wide of the mark.
True Blue & White Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 What do we have here? A group of people who have kept in the background whilst the real business was done. Is that a joke?
michaelthomas Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I still chuckle when I see we got £2.5m for Kuqi!
Lancs Rover Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Not in the context of the full post, it isn't.
chris Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I still chuckle when I see we got £2.5m for Kuqi! yeah so did I £4 million for Grella hurts a bit though
thenodrog Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Why am I annoyed that you're annoyed about the papers mentioning "credit crunch" and "recession" The football world's gone mad. Players getting 50,000 pounds A WEEK and nobody bats an eyelid. Players being transferred for 5 million, 20 million, fifty million ... I don't know about you Le CHuck. Maybe you've got a good job. Things are going OK for you but there are many people out there who are seriously struggling. Probably many people who've given up on watching football because they're sick of seeing players and agents getting greedier. Seems to me the Premier League is like our house prices over the last ten years. Everyone can see that it just doesn't make sense but we just keep on buying and selling till it becomes unsustainable. The transfer window hasn't helped the situation in my opinion. Rant over, nothing personal. Maybe I'm the only one on this board who can't get his head round it. The last years of the Holy Roman Empire saw ever greater and more extravagent gladatorial spectacles all designed to divert the publics attention from the Empire going down the pan as the invading hordes closed in. The more things change the more they stay the same ross-shire.
Lancs Rover Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Is that a joke? Not in the context of the full post, it isn't. Give me a humble chicken farmer, for all their media naivety, any day compared to the loud mouths and chancers that own some other clubs. Steve Kean was the media mouthpiece in this transfer window. Seems they have learned their lesson the hard way. Well done to them.
thenodrog Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Kean suggests Diouf's move is temporary... http://www.rovers.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10303~2282047,00.html Kean needs to deny in the strongest possible terms and in his loudest voice that we rolled over and went belly up simply because Neil Warnock told us to. I'm afraid thats how it will appear in many people's eyes..... including those of our own players. All manager's should protect and be seen to protect their players in public at all times if they want to get the best out of them.
thenodrog Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 However, (and this isn't a whinge) am I the only person on the entire board concerned that Diouf has been allowed to leave on loan? After watching the performances of Andrews and Grella at Villa on Saturday, I would have much rather keep Diouf than let either of those two play ever again. Andrews was especially useless. Rather obvious answer to that dj. We can only get rid of players that some other club wants. EHD's a good player whilst those two albeit for different reasons are liabilities. Any manager wanting either would surely be feeling his Chairman breathing down his neck.
