thenodrog Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 over all a very good window, the owners backed the manager and he got the players that he wanted 8.5 out of 10. A cewrtain irony being that they are not known for backing managers.

BuckyRover Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 A cewrtain irony being that they are not known for backing managers. One particular, belligerent manager to be precise.
thenodrog Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 For the morale of the squad, it was best for him to leave. You need to insert imo somewhere in that sentence. Its a fair point, i suppose you can only take so much booing before it starts to bring you down. I cant help but wonder how the scots will take to him. Celtic fans love him don't they? I think it makes no sense to keep roberts and get rid of diouf..unless there is an underlying problem with the rest of the squad... The sense being that EHD criticised Allardyce's replacement with Kean whilst Roberts supported it. I think you need look no further than that Marky.
RoverInverness Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 The last years of the Holy Roman Empire saw ever greater and more extravagent gladatorial spectacles all designed to divert the publics attention from the Empire going down the pan as the invading hordes closed in. The more things change the more they stay the same ross-shire. SORRY to be off topic but - The Holy Roman Empire and the Roman Empire are not the same thing. Also, I think you will find that gladatorial spectacles were in steep decline after the conversion to Christianity. I'm normally a silent reader but don't use history to try and sound clever if you don't know what you are talking about please. Thanks - back to being silent again now.
thenodrog Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I have never seen anything from him that makes me think we should keep him, also didn't he threaten to leave at the beginning of the season demanding more money? All the time he's been here Roberts has threatened to leave every time he is dropped for a match or two.
True Blue & White Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 SORRY to be off topic but - The Holy Roman Empire and the Roman Empire are not the same thing. Also, I think you will find that gladatorial spectacles were in steep decline after the conversion to Christianity. But was Rome in a day? That's the big question.
thenodrog Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Plus, who is going to take the responsibility of the slow substitution walk off? RSC/Grella/Dunny......No one gets booked for limping off.
CAPT KAYOS Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I disagree on the "buying for the future" bit. For Rovers it is the only way to go - as we can't afford £50m for Torres or £35m for Carroll - but it looks like we can now buy young players who one day may turn into the next Torres or Carroll. IMO they have got it right - brought in two experienced players on loan who will stablise the club (if they can stay fit) and give hopefully give us time to bed in the younger players. Think I might have worded it a bit different to what I meant on this DMTP. I didn't mean not to buy young just not to buy and leave them withering out in the wilderness but for them to go straight into first team plans as we need them now, in no way did I mean going out buying the big names. This is something I mentioned a couple of seasons back about what I thought the direction the club should be concentrating on shortly after Hughes left us and the doubts about the trust backing and rumours of the 'club for sale' seem to first arise. From my own personal viewpoint there is nothing yet to say that these two new 'babies' are going to be names on the 1st team sheet - especially with all the hoo hah that appears to going on about them - hopefully this won't be the case and they will be included in the shake up whilst also developing themselves into a prospected future stars.
thenodrog Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 One particular, belligerent manager to be precise. Yes indeed. Funny how MU, Arsenal, Real, Spurs don't follow suit isn't it bucky? Forest wouldn't have won a thing if they had got rid of theirs either would they?
thenodrog Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Also, I think you will find that gladatorial spectacles were in steep decline after the conversion to Christianity. Do you know you are making me doubt my old primary school teacher now.
nicko Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 The time to assess the new regime was AFTER the window, so here goes. OWNERS...clearly have money, but like to spend it wisely and have a plan...let the manager have Roque on massive wages...found cash for Jones's wages...invested in Formica and Rochina...dished out more dough for the senior players in what was a shrewd and unexpected gesture...gave Kean a contract and said he was safe which is good news...probably spent about £7 million including wages which is above the first level mentioned and below the potential pot...Maradona and Ronaldinho were bizarre interludes...you can live with that when people are new and want to make a splash...learned fast...seem straight to me...8 out of 10. MANAGER...Steve Kean has done a very good job so far, starting with a lot of people out to trip him up and getting worse with injuries...a steady hand, popular with the players...made a list that was not quite delivered, but that's football...has proved to be a tactician who can play a new style and a politician aho can handle the off-the-field nonsense...no fool...a find...8 out of 10. THE AGENTS...not the bogey men some had painted...obviously have connections...Formica, Rochina and Jones deals took some doing and were handled on time...few rivals can claim they did better...where was there ever scope to 'rip off' a club with a budget like Rovers?...interesting to note that Philippe Huber is the main mover in the relationship and NOT Jerome Anderson who is the most visible...their master plan of bringing in young talent will take time, but Formica and Rochina are young and could be the first of several...fair effort in a window where many rivals struggled to do anything...8 out of 10. There is one absolutely brilliant line that I have sat on for months as the Jerome Anderson link emerged - and all of the blethers from some 'well-informed' quarters rumble on. Anderon's son has been a Rovers player for MONTHS - since before the takeover - and not one person around here mentioned it. One of the first things the new regime did was to send him out on loan. I wonder what the conspiracy theorists make of that one? Hilarious.

I wanted BRFC to be viewed as the showcase for up and coming new talent whose career curve had dipped under Hughes. Rovers under his management had reinvented and reignited the spluttering talents of RSC, Bellamy, Bentley, Warnock and Samba. He'd also missed out on a few goodies in Diarra and Huddleston whilst the other side of the coin saw him fail with Jeffers. They must have made a favourable impression on many agents for underperforming youngsters. I also rather hoped that Freidels academy might have sought to showcase a few American gems through the club and/or Cercle Brugge to the european market too but his resignation put paid to all that. So I do see this agent involvement in a more favourable light but there is still a niggle over what they might see as their reimbursement.

TimmyJimmy Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 There is one absolutely brilliant line that I have sat on for months as the Jerome Anderson link emerged - and all of the blethers from some 'well-informed' quarters rumble on. Anderon's son has been a Rovers player for MONTHS - since before the takeover - and not one person around here mentioned it. One of the first things the new regime did was to send him out on loan. I wonder what the conspiracy theorists make of that one? Hilarious. Come on Nicko that's been public knowledge for ages. Miles Anderson was trialing at a pre season friendly (a match at Morecombe?) taken by Steve Kean (allegedly) whilst Sam and McD looked after a second game somewhere else. Not sure where he went after that (Scotland perhaps?). I'm sure that Sam and McD knew all about it and that it wasn't a favour to anyone.
spencey7 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 What a fantastic window for Rovers. Experienced players brought in along with exciting, creative youngsters and the beginnings of a style that's entertaining to watch. Remember entertainment? With Diouf gone the de-Allardysation is almost complete, and much, much quicker than I expected it would be. Thank you Venky's.
bigbrandjohn Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Can't see Freidel and Bentley leaving in that lot. Have I missed em or is my knowledge of history really as bad as roverinverness insists it is? Wow that Mcarthy out was a stroke of genius. They can't even pay him a million to get rid. not even in the squad so can't play. Guess that shows his motivation. Those cockles and chips way to good to forsake. What a waste of talent. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703399204576108571892794068.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

jim mk2 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Come on Nicko that's been public knowledge for ages. Public knowledge to alot of fans but a revelation to a member of the press apparently. Also plain to see for those who watch these games that he wasn't good enough and was moved on, first to Leyton Orient and then Aberdeen I believe but stand to be corrected..
nicko Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 So I do see this agent involvement in a more favourable light but there is still a niggle over what they might see as their reimbursement. Better to split a profit than have no profit at all. Nobody would pretend that finding talent and selling it is the way forward for a club of your size and resources. Jack Walker saw the plan 20 years ago. Sign them young, bring them through and have a sale in them... It's not a bad model to have. You find a good one and their value shoots in a hurry. If Andy Carroll is worth £35 million, after all...
True Blue & White Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 The time to assess the new regime was AFTER the window, so here goes. Didn't think you would be one to add wages and future wages to our transfer budget but I guess saying we spent £7 million is better than the £4 million we actually spent on transfers (despite the fact if they are as good as everyone here expects it may be a very good £4m spent). How much did we spend in the summer? Most on here, and I suspect you, would say nothing but under the same rules as above you should be including Benjani's wages, Mame Diouf's loan fee and wages and credit the Trust with giving Pedersen, N'Zonzi, Phil Jones, Hanley and Olsson new long-term contracts and adding their wages in as well. So if, we're going to be fair and say the Trust spent nothing, we have to apply the same rules to Venky's in which case they spent £4m (as they said they would). I don't see any evidence yet that they have 'cash' and I guess we'll have to wait until the summer to see if this 'marque' signing ever happens because i for one am not convinced they were truly hopeful of getting Ronaldinho. MANAGER...Steve Kean has done a very good job so far, starting with a lot of people out to trip him up and getting worse with injuries...a steady hand, popular with the players...made a list that was not quite delivered, but that's football...has proved to be a tactician who can play a new style and a politician aho can handle the off-the-field nonsense...no fool...a find...8 out of 10. ..and if he wasn't Scottish? Afterall, we've spent the last 30 days talking about Charlie Adam for no other reason. He's can certainly talk the talk given the turn around in dissaffected players, but can he walk the walk. I bloody hope so but way too early to score Kean on his mangerial abilities. Fair points, well made. The only thing I would say is the bit in bold makes our owner's wealth sound rather modest which contradicts your opening sentence about our owners "clearly having money". Hilarious. Is he any good?
Andy Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 The sale of Andy Carroll could actually be of benefit to us, when we come to cash in on Phil Jones. If an average gangly English forward can go for £35m, then how much for someone who's already shown more in the Premiership, over a (slightly) longer timescale and with immeasureably more potential?
