[Archived] Venky's Summer Transfer List

Yup, common sense is Jermaine Jones at the top of that list along with a nice contract offer for Junior.

Then I'd like to see an approach for one or two of the Spurs lads, they have a wealth of quality players on the fringes. Also wouldn't mind another one or two of these Barcelona kids!

From the relegated sides I'd look at:

West Ham (feels good to say that)

Baaaaaa

Parker (obviously we wouldn't get him)

Birmingham (feels better to say that)

None spring to mind although Gardner is a good player

Blackpool

Adam is the obvious one and about the only one I'd want

Lot of rebuilding to be done in the summer, especially if Venky's want a top half, pushing Europa League finish next season.

A new manager is of course the priority and maybe look at the overall management structure at the club, we already have a deputy chief exec arriving from Leicester iirc?

The new manager will then have to look at the squad overall to see what he wants to do with it. Central midfield (if J.Jones goes) and the striking options are the main priority areas. With quite a bit of deadwood to shift out the manager should have areas to improve on. This will of course cost money, but if Venky's want to match their aims it's going to take a bit of cash. Keeping the likes of P.Jones and Hoilett would be very beneficial to the club, however if they want to leave and we get a decent price then the money must be reinvested from their sales.

Ba is a good call. He did really well for a struggling West Ham (7 in 12 games I think) and was sort of overlooked by a lot of observers because of the team he was playing in and the fact the season ended before that many people could notice him. I think he's a realistic prospect and couldve joined us in January by all accounts. Shouldnt be that expensive.

gonna be a bit controversial here but considering our weakness in midfield ....Barry Ferguson???..........forgetting the past ....who would take him now??

As backup perhaps, but I'd rather get someone else. Besides, I think Jermaine Jones and N'Zonzi are good enough starters in central midfield.

Looking at our squad, the first eleven is pretty good. Good enough for the Premiership, anyhow.

Robbo

Salgado-Samba-P.Jones-Givet

Hoilett-Emerton-J.Jones-NZonzi-Olsson

Roberts

Assuming we sell nobody in the summer (unlikely) and we manage to get JJ in permanent (also sadly unlikely) the only area that needs immediate strengthening is the striking department, and perhaps one other central midfielder. Obviously long-term we need to look at replacing Salgado due to his age and a proper left-back would be nice, though I wouldn't term it essential. We also need to strengthen our overall backup, though we've got decent players like Bunn, MGP (when he can be bothered), Benjani (good in spells), Hanley, Dunn (when fit), Rochina and Formica in reserve who can hopefully step up if asked to.

For me, the squad doesn't need massive tweaking - if we keep our current big players we'll have a great core to the squad, and the addition of two or three geniune quality players would see us ready to push on next season.

The big signing needs to be done at management level, no question about that, and I think it is that change - or non-change - that will determine whether we spend next season probing into the top 10 or struggling against relegation again.

If Ba can pass a medical then i think he could work. West Ham wasted him out wide too often. All the while persisting with the useless Carlton Cole through the middle. Albeit very sporadically, whenever i saw West Ham, Ba looked a real threat when they did move him inside.

I also like Gardner at Brum. Having a midfielder capable of scoring from open play and set pieces would be very welcome in out starting XI.

Warnock did a job for us. But i always felt he was suspect to positional issues. Too many last ditch tackles made him look good when in fact he was often recovering from having been drawn out of the back four. As he ages and loses a yard of pace he will just become a defender who is a liability. He already gives too many free kicks and penalties away so i'm not sure i'd happily take him back.

Who was the young lad who played left back a few times for us this season? Josh Morris? Has anyone got any idea how he is progressing?

I have to strongly disagree with this. Defensively we look pretty sound but Salgado isn't getting any younger and Givet really isn't a left back. Central midfield we look weak especially if we can't keep Jones, there is no real creative spark centrally and some deadwood that needs to be shifted. Up front we are a joke, if you think Jason '5 goals a season 'Roberts is good enough to keep us clear of survival then I want whatever you are drinking or smoking.

The squad needs a major overhaul and has done for years.

Did you read much of my post?

I noted Salgado isn't getting any younger and we'd need a replacement, and also said a left-back would be nice but isn't essential atm. I also said "the only area that needs immediate strengthening is the striking department" so i'm not sure why you think that translates to me believing Roberts is good enough.

Whilst it's true in central midfield we have a creative void, much of our creativity at present comes from the wings in Junior & Olsson. We've also got Formica and Rochina who may be able to provide that spark next season.

Let's not get carried away with today. Lots of work to be done in the close season if we're to avoid a repetition of this season. Unfortunately I can see some of the names you'd want to keep moving on this close season.

Couldn't agree more. Roberts has the physical attributes required of a lone striker, but sadly none of the technical ones. His one-on-one miss today said it all for me. The ball fell to him, he was free as a bird, yet I just knew he wouldn't put it past the keeper.

I still couldn't believe he was offered a new contract this season. Hard to envision that happening under Sam...

We need a good number of players, even considering we don't sell anyone.

I think this should be our first priorities (when talking about players):

- Sign two first team strikers, release Benjani

- Sign Jermaine Jones

- Sign a first team left back

- Sign a promissing right back to learn from Salgado in the next year.

- Sign a offensive midfielder (sell/release grella and Andrews)

This should be a busy time of the year for whoever is in charge.

I concur, hence why unfortunately I noted the above scenario is unlikely. I don't expect us to retain JJ and I expect one of Samba or Phil Jones to move as well, Junior may well go too.

Still, at present I think we have a core of a good side. With the right signings (4 or 5 if Venky's want Europe, perhaps even more, 2 or 3 if they want to retain Premiership status and maybe hit top 10) and the right manager we should be okay next season. It's a big, big summer for the club.

NO not ridgewell, my grandad is a big blues fan and season ticket holder, i always get to have a good hour discussion with him about birmingham and he says, Dann, Foster and Johnson are the only players worth getting, rest of the team is nothing more than championship level hence the reason they went down.

Don't want Johnson or Dann, and especially not Ridgewell. Johnson is decent enough I suppose, as is Danns, but they had their purple patch in the 09/10 season and haven't been near that level this season. The only player I would want from Brum is Craig Gardner.

Demba Ba would be a magnificent signing, and his career stats thus far show that he's not the sicknote many make him out to be. Pretty sure that both Ba and Hitzlsperger (would quite like him as well) have release clauses enabling them to leave WHU on a free due to relegation.

Vaughan from Blackpool could maybe be a decent signing (didn't he win Blackpool's player of the year award?) too? I know the old saying that goes something like "If you buy Championship players, you'll get Championship football", but there are some good players still on the books of the relegated trio.
