I am not really in favour of Marquee signings, perhaps Beckham as a commercial enterprise (and he would still give us a decent game, its more we should be looking at balance in the side, The spine of the side is built first, Keeper, Centre back and Striker,

at present we have the keeper and centre backs in place, we desperately need a quality striker, they dont come cheaply but if we are to progress thats what we need, Sunderland did OK with Bent, dived when he left and Bent kept Villa up this season, without him they would have been goosed.

For me, like Majiball, Crouch or a young Carew type player would be my choice but there arent many around and would be in huge demand.

There is Cardozo, but like we said he is a bit slow hits a great free kick though. Fiorentina had a shocker this year Gilardino is one of my favorite players and is a cracking striker, montolivo in midfield would be a good shout as well. Juventus need funds, so maybe Laquinta and I'd be keen to see who loses out now they have signed Pirlo. Amauri on loan at Parma maybe? Abel Hernandez at Palermo and as a marque signing I'd crem my pants at Pastore or Sanchez, but they belong on the deluded list.

A number of Italian club had shockers this season:

Novakovic at Koln has had a great season, strong in the air and a real eye for goal. Llorente at Bilbao is a great target man type, Negredo at Sevilla (expensive)

Trouble is the type of striker you need to be able to play one up and direct at times are in short supply these days, well of the quality we need.

If it were me I'd try for Gilardino.

The only good think of trying to get Cardozo now is that he wants to leave, Benfica want to sell and he is cheaper now than he was a year ago. One year ago, Benfica refused €25 million for him. Now, he will probably leave for €15 to €20 million.

For that money I would rather go for falcao.

15-20 is a decent price for a player of his quality. Oklahoma do you think his lack of pace would be an issue? Is he good at moving off the ball and at finding space for himself?

He is a slow player but has a great shot. He could do well with a more gifted and faster player next to him like Hoillet. His partner in the attack in Benfica is Saviola.

The style of football is diferent but I think he can score at least 15 goals in a season there.

He usually finds himself some space and, if he can shoot, it is very hard to defend. However, he only shoots with his left.

For that money I would rather go for falcao.

Trust me, I prefer Falcão as well (first discovered by Benfica scouts).

But his release clause is €30 million and FC Porto don't want to sell him.

The talk of players like:

Hulk, Falcao, Llorente etc. need to stop. They are targets for the likes of Real Madrid and at least double our total transfer budget. Oklahoma usually have a good knowledge about what happens in Portugal, so I was kind of hoping he could say - enough of the silly stuff and suggest more realistic targets....

I wouldn't pay 10M for Jones, physical beast and very quick, but lacks technical ability.

Max 5M as we could get similar for that kind of money.

Besides we'd have 3 Jones in the one team! Way too confusing!

+1. Even if we have the sort of transfer budget that has been speculated on, I would not want it all to go on the sort of players that are being discussed(Ignoring the debate on whether they would actually come to us).

There are too many holes in the first team that need strengthening to blow it all on 1 or 2 players.

I'm not usually in favour of re-signing players, but in Bellamy and Bentley there are two exceptions. We are lacking quality crosses into the box - Bentley, and we are short of electric pace up front - Bellamy!

Totally agree.

If the talk about a £20m kitty is true (excluding the Samba money) then we should be able to add three quality players. Any marquee signing would be financed by the Rao brothers, but I won't get my hopes up.

Get some sleep now ladies & gentlemen, the 11-o'clockers will be raining down on us come June and cause extensive sleep deprivation.

Can any of the Swedish posters shed some light on how Dennis Avdic have been playing for Werder Bremen? According to Wiki he's only featured in two games...

Trouble is to achieve what they say they want for us, we are going to need a 15-20 goal a season man and to get one of those that can cut it in this league will cost 15-20M. Bent cost what 24M, but he will fire Villa up the league next year.

If they really are serious, then they'll have to find one who is willing to come. I too would far rather we signed a younger player and groomed him, but as we've seen with Kalinic it can be very hit and miss. Proven quality up front for next year is an absolute must to achieve our goals. It's time for SEM and Venky's to earn their strips and deliver one, they've had plenty of time to get one lined up and come good on their promise of a marque signing - from their own pockets not our transfer funds.

Unless of course this bumper transfer fund is instead of a marquee signing???

I totally agree with most of the sentiments on here, even know there are literally hundreds of players that can be scouted I would like to stick o the tried and true, to start with find whatever we can to sign RSC and extend the contractss of Grella and Dunn.

My targets would then be King and Woodgate to replace Samba and Jones, left back in Fabio Aurelio, Hargreaves to strengthen the midfeild and chase Owen hard on a free.

So...

Robinson

Salgado King Woodgate Aurelio

Dunn Hargreaves Grella Olssen

RSC Owen

Personally cant see a 20m kitty + money from sales. I think they will meet at about the 20m range with a sale included in there, but it wont be the lowest in the league.

JJ shouldnt normally cost more than 2-3 million Euros however, the new manager may want him in the side, and they could also ask for more cause we have "rich" owners.

If Samba leaves, Id sign a proper left back, and move Givet to central defence, before I sign a center back for sure.

A central ball playing midfielder could be useful for next to JJ in midfield. Someone talked about Hargreaves. Id take him on in a heartbeat. Worth the risk cause you may be getting a world class player, and even if he isnt he was at a time one of Europe's best and without doubt the best English defensive midfielder of last decade.

The emergence or non-emergence of Formica will also answer a lot of questions.

A top of the line striker who is proven, preferably in this league will also be a priority.

I think Givet's been messed around a bit by the handling from the club in last couple of months but his professionalism and heart for the cause has been among the leading players. Id appease him and keep him. We cant lose more than 1 from our back 5 this summer.

I'm predicting alot of people will be very surprised at the standard of players brought in this summer.

My eyes are bleeding reading Hargreaves,Owen and Woodgate.

Here's my thoughts, with a 20m warchest, wages will be pretty much offset with deadwood and wage thiefs cleared out.

Defence

Right Back- Sign Nathaniel Clyne from Palce - 3.5m

Salgado is solid and is one of the most passionate players I've ever seen in a Rovers shirt, is getting on and those poor legs are only gonna slow down next year.I would keep him for his final year, and will help Clyne develop. Emerton can play here in a pinch.

Left Back- Sign Callum Booth from Hibs - 1m (up and coming young left back)

I know this board is pretty split on if Olsson is a left back or not. I think it depends on the system to be honest. In a 4-5-1 he should be at left back and be asked to push on, with the Defensive Midfielders covering whilst he rampages down the flank. Givet is a solid player here as well with little attacking threat but against big teams he cuts an imposing figure at left back. We also sign Booth from Hibs who I've seen a couple of times and is young and has potential.

Centre-Halfs

-Sign Bassong from Spurs - 6m

Sell Samba to Arsenal(?) - 17m

Samba will be away, thanks for saving our team in the last few games big man, 17m is what I would expect in return for his services. Bassong I think would be an excellent replacement, Quick and strong would form a centre partnership with Jones and still young(24). Although we would lose Samba's dominance in the air which I would be concerned about.Givet and Nelsen would provide the main back-ups, with Hanley.

Central Midfielders

- Sign Jermaine Jones from Schalke- 4m

Sign Wilson Palacios from Spurs - 6m

Sell/Get rid - Andrews,Grella(ugh),Goulon,Linganzi,

10m for Jones, absolute belter whoever came up with that one, 4m tops or no deal. I cant believe how fast he is, and he looks like he wants to play for us, sign him up. Palacios aparantly on the transfer list at SPurs, would be an incredible signing for us. These two in midfield will give us the bite and grit to start winning the ball in the middle of the park. 10m well spent I think. N'zonzi is good but he seems to disappear alot in games and his passing is still a little suspect, I think he has improving still to do but will be in or around the first team.I'll keep Dunn for now. Lowe seems to be coming along well and may get a spot in the first team squad. Emerton and MGP can also play in the middle, and also big Phil Jones.

Wide Midfielders - Sign Joe Cole from Liverpool - 2m( some form of pay as you play deal if possible, will be taking a big pay cut)

Sell EHD

Joe Cole is on his way out of Liverpool, would be some form of Marque signing, although getting on and has injuries he is a quality player. Hoilett I prefer on the left wing with Olsson in behind, Junior likes to cut inside on his right foot and there aren't many right backs in the league that can catch him. MGP wont be going anywhere but may spend more time 'riding the pine, next year. Rochina looks like he could also play left wing in a 4-3-3. Emerton provides back up for both right back and right midfield, best crosser of a ball we have, generally poor season but finished on top form. Formica another one who could play right wing. Plenty of wide midfielder options.

Strikers - Sign RSC from City - 1m(free doesnt look right)(also on some form of pay as you play deal)

Sign Demba Ba from W.Ham - 6.5m

Sell - Roberts, Diouf back to Utd.

That would give us RSC,Ba,Kalinic,Benjani and Rochina. RSC is gonna be cheap and if he is willing to be reasonable about his wages and he still wants to play for us I'd have him back, I thought the first couple of games when he came back he was class. Obviously he never got up to full speed but I dont think our system helped, a full preseason will help along with better quality around him. Guarantee he would have scored that chance at wolves that Roberts fluffed. Ba looked quick and strong against us and his record for the hammers was excellent, a bargain at 6.5m if his medical checks out. Kalinic I mentioned earlier in this thread, I'd keep him for now, still young and can improve, needs to change his boots and his attitude though. 6m is a lot of money and I dont think we would recoup half that if we sold him now. Benjani over Roberts for Back-up. Rochina's two goals for reserves against Utd and his performance against Everton first half suggests we have ourselves a real player. Probably not physical enough to go up top on his own but cant wait to see him with a strike partner or wide left in a 3-man front.

So Shopping List

Nathaniel Clyne-Palace-3.5m

Callum Booth-Hibs-1m

Sebastian Bassong-Spurs-6m

Wilson Palacios-Spurs-6m

Jermaine Jones-Schalke-4m

Joe Cole-Liverpool-2m

Roque Santa Cruz-City-1m

Demba Ba-West Ham-6.5m

Total- 30m

Samba + departures

Total- 20m

Venkys

Total 10m + wages

Robinson

Clyne Bassong Jones Olsson

Cole Palacios J.Jones Hoilett

Ba Rochina

Sorry for the length.
