people also have to consider, that times have changed. Players are being payed more then ever and their price is higher then ever. Therefore the logical conclusion must be, that finding bargains. is harder then ever.

So comparing sams dealings, to that of others, seems a bit unfair.

Hells bells - you forget how 'interesting' Souey's years were!

There must be someone out there who can do a P & L on transfer dealings for Souey, Hughes & Sam. I'll wager a quid or two that net net, Sam was our most profitable manager.

I'd like to see the list Kean said he submitted to whoever for the window and where, if at all, our four signings appear. My guess is that at least two wont even be there!

I am no Souness fan. He did pick out some genuine nuggets but there s also a history of transfer disasters.

However you're over-egging it with your comments about Sam. No comparison with Hughes. Should have been our manager forever and I know who to blame for that.

Who ?

Must have been Sam, knowing he would get the job eventually.

Or the insidious trust with their penny pinchibg ways.

In fact though it was and could only be Hughes.

Who should've shifted him when he peaked?

Mystic Meg?

That was not what I was getting at though.

How would you feel if you worked wonders on and off the pitch and wanted some spare change for *one* key signing, only for the Trust to sit on their hands?

Don't blame Hughes one bit for getting fed-up.

Well what were you getting at?

Hughes left because he took us as far as he could, and as you said got fed up. It is simply his decision no one elses. Could he have been supported more financially? Yes. Did he throw his toys out of his pram and bugger off to the first club that sniffed? Yes. He even pimped himself to Newcastle.

I think Gamst was another successful signing and was curious if my recollection if who signed him was correct.

And tbh, I respect his decision.

Oh, right.

Well, Souey did. But Hughes made him.

He peaked under Hughes didn't he? Presumably Hughes should have known his form would then plumet?

Doesn't really figure. It's lose lose all the way. Managers dont want to move form players on at all, they need them to survive more than the average 20 months in work or whatever it is now. It's Boards that sell em.... and when they do we give them hell! It's a no win situation.

Ped's odd though, GS bought him and it seems never rated him. Hughes and Allardyce both rate him and who cares what Ince and the current man think as they aren't proper managers.

He'd run his course at lil old BRFC unfortunately, like everybody he wanted bigger things and his vulnerability was exposed by being convinced by Kenyon, Arnesen and Buck that the Chelsea job was his. After that his Abromovich induced disappointment was exploited by the Man City pimp.

Sad though.

Sigh...

I still can not help blaming Hughes in some small way for the appointment of Ince, that and Facebook.

That is what drives me crazy about this defense of Kean, Sam was so so so horribly treated by the fans EVEN BEFORE he was appointed. Yet we get a manager with zero experience and we roll over and show our bellies like a whipped dog. People then defend the man, people who signed petitions to keep Sam away in the first place, and state that people who are unhappy about that nonfans. They then call people who think Kean and Andrews are not good enough, Nazi's, or just plain hate filled.

Mirrors should be used with the hideous treatment of a manager that did more for this club than either Andrews or Kean ever will. I remember people wishing Sam to have a heart attack on the touchline for god sake.

Got to remember, that even before he was appointed, some fans hated Sam personally. As a man/person, some people have no time for him plus the fact he managed Bolton too of course.

Even though it was not to the same degree, it reminded me a little bit of the Souness days, some people could not stand him (as a person) regardless of his achievements on the pitch.

Sam does have a self inflated ego, and talks himself up, however that's not a bad thing to have IMO. His track record, in relation to results, is very good and the Newcastle experience is seen as a negative even though it can be argued he never had enough time.

Hughes also talks himself up, however in a more subtle way. Sparky and Big Sam do have something in common - they are convinced they can come into a football club and improve that particular club. They believe in their backroom/support staff which they assemble, and are happy to delegate responsibilities/tasks because they have skilled/talented people working with them towards the common goal.

Does Sam get the credit just for being around when we sold Bentley and Cruz or does the credit for inflating their worth go to Hughes?

A agree that Souness get's bad press because of how his reign ended. He deserves eternal credit for bringin us back up when we were on our knees and then winning us a cup which puts him 2nd in the list of most sucessful managers since 1928
