  1. 1. Should Steve Kean stay or go

Recommended Posts

There could be legitimate reasons for him pleading not guilty to this offence - medication affecting his body's ability to process alcohol as quickly / drink spiking / necessity etc. I don't know all the facts to it so its difficult to say. Very difficult to get round drink driving offences though irrespective of any mitigation you may raise.

What I will say 100% is that he will not be sent to prison for twice the legal limit in breath, unless he has two previous offences in the last 10 years. Chances are he'll be looking at a disqualification (18-24 months I guess) and a fine.

To enter a NG plea delays things considerably which could simply be a tactic to preserve his employment. I would've thought that had he entered a guilty plea he would've been disqualified already and any disciplinary proceedings from Venkys would be able to start much sooner. SHould Venky's decide to sack him after the Court case it leaves them alot less time to find a replacement.

Looks like he'll be on taxis for a while anyway!

according to http://twitter.com/#!/schadd3 Keans reasons for pleading not guilty are quite unusual,

He had a packet of Wine Gums?

The limit is the limit. If you drink and drive then you should face the penalties and not be able to pay expensive lawyers to get your way out of trouble.

The guy clearly hasn't got a clue what he is talking about. Today he says that he wants to bring in Santa Cruz on a permanent deal and gives this gem of a quote:

"Being around the place and showing his quality every day in training, he showed us how good he is," commented the 43-year-old.

He wants to get rid of Kalinic who has scored goals this season but keep Roque who hasn't and has been shocking on his return to the club.

I fear for the club if we do get some decent money to spend this season and they give it to a prat like Kean.

Thats another route he can take - His lawyers will need to show that the Police procedures were not carried out properly, or their equipment was not functioning correctly. Expensive stuff. Good job he's got plenty of spare cash!

For those who work at Brockhall, how did Stephen Kena leave the training ground the day the Venky mob turned up when they had a barbecue.

In a safe and sensible fashion I hope ;)

Kean lists his official residence as Weybridge, Surrey in the PA court report - good to see he is committed to east lancashire.

Hopefully he will be able to spend more time in Surrey very soon.

FOOTBALL BOSS DENIES DRINK DRIVING

By Mike Hornby, Press Association

Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean denied drink driving when he appeared in court today.

Kean, 43, is accused of being almost twice the legal limit when he failed a breath test just hours after his side's match against Manchester United last month.

Kean, wearing a grey suit, pleaded not guilty when he was formally charged at Crewe Magistrates Court today.

The allegation is that he was breathalysed after his Mercedes was pulled over by police on the south-bound carriageway of the M6 near Knutsford, Cheshire, following the 1-1 draw at Ewood Park on May 14.

Kean, of Weybridge, Surrey, is accused of having 65 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath.

Kean was appointed caretaker manager at Blackburn in December following the sacking of Sam Allardyce before being given the role permanently.

The former Fulham, Coventry and Real Sociedad coach was granted unconditional bail until his one-day trial at Macclesfield Magistrates on August 15.He made no comment as he left the court building.end

I met Kean in Weybridge around 2 years ago, he was out in The Minnow with Chris Coleman. To be fair, they were both really friendly and I chatted to them for over an hour or so. I remember recommending they sign Matt Derbyshire at the time.

Little did I know at the time he would be our manager....

IMO, Stephen Kean should have pleaded guilty and taken his punishment like a man - allegedly, it wasn't even marginal.

No doubt, IMO, he will be looking to escape on a technicality. IMO, this tells you everything that you need to know about him and you suspect that the alleged underhand tactics associated with him leading up to Sam's sacking could have some credibility.

Drink driving by anyone is an abhorent offence.

If he does get away with this on a technicality, the police will be out to get him in the future, rest assured, as they hate such shenanigans for this offence. Pal of mine is a traffic cop based @ Preston and this sort of thing just makes his blood boil.

Weybridge, Surrey- thats a 4 hour drive from blackburn, what a prick, i dont expect rovers staff or players too live in blackburn obviously(i wouldnt if i could afford not too) but surrey is taking the pish, really dont know what the score is with this man but everything about him seems fishy and the longer the venkys stand by him the more fishy they seem.

NOW Venkys!,

Just get a proper manager in we dont care if that means going back on your word of telling kean hes here for the long term, its quite the norm for chairmen/women to give managers the vote of confidence and then do away with them at the 1st available chance(NOW), if its best for the club(which is ALL that really matters), please see sense and dont let Kean and his kentaro assosiates BS you into sticking with him(there not interested in are club, only how much £££ and publicity they can squeeze from it/you.

And if Alex Ferguson thinks jerome anderson/kentaro is as good as trash, shouldnt that confince you enough too seek a differant perspective and find advise elswere.

i know im wasting my time writing this, but what else can i/we do!

Also it doesnt say in the article why kean was initially pulled up by the police, was he speeding, driving dangerously ect...,

ive been driving 10+ years and never been pulled over.

Presumably he lived at Weybridge when he was at Fulham but decided to keep the house when he moved to Rovers. He has a place in Whalley I believe but to list Weybridge as his main residence shows where his priorities lie. Perhaps he views Rovers as only a stepping stone to the Emirates when Wenger steps aside. You have to admire a man with such a positive attitude.

May be an old quote, given just as he was getting into his car after the man U game. when pi@@.

Having pled not guilty to drink driving, if found guilty, the punishment would be greater.

No time for drink drivers - if guilty and is found guilty - hope he is jailed for it.

Normally yes and by all means that should be the case, so that a precedent is set. However, your BAC level (whatever it is) has to implicate you in reckless driving for it to be considered an offence. Although normally being over the legal limit is enough to prove the case, in reality it's not. The government sets the legal limit based on a review of various studies done on the effects of alcohol on driving, reaction time etc. They will then come to a conclusion based on the most 'significant' results. Depending on who's in charge, they will choose to set it at different points and for different reasons ie. in Australia it's 0.05 and in UK it's 0.08.

Basically, the studies they base their conclusions on are NOT stone, cold fact and in fact there would be several people doing the test that show that they don't have their driving skills/reaction time affected at a particular BAC level. If the alcohol is not affecting the person's driving skills then the person is essentially not recklessly driving and doesn't have the intent to harm others, so it can't be classed as an offence. And remember, courts are there for 'ordinary' folk to challenge established laws.

In short, as per our judicial system, a person has to be proven to be guilty beyond reasonable doubt and it can be argued against quite easily based on existing research (and I haven't even covered various other factors that may come into the equation). I'll say here that I would not be surprised at all if people are indeed affected differently as far as BAC is concerned, however, the law needs to be a one-size-fits-all solution, so everyone should be punished equally, otherwise anyone can start using the same excuse to get away from their crimes.

From the effects research I've looked at before related to alcohol and driving, I have to say that I don't recall any studies concluding that a person is not affected by alcohol past the 0.10 level. So if Kean was indeed at around the 0.15 level, I would be interested to hear what his defence is. They would obviously have to bring more arguments into it to make their case.

A person does not need to be driving recklessly in order for the Police to stop them. I am aware of a police operation in my area and the 1st January one year. Police were stopping people in the morning - between 6am to 8am. Many still over the limit from the night before. With the roads quiet the Police were pulling everybody in and testing. This was quite a few years ago - testing procedures may have changed since then.

One defence I have heard of was that a person pulled over, took medication on the way to the police station which effected his alcohol limit. I Don't know if there are medications that can give false readings - just a defence I heard about. Did kean visit an injured player, where alcohol was used to treat a wound, that got on his clothes. just speculating as I cannot think of any other defence Kean could use.

Right now think that would be the best thing to happen for all. The man has no shame which is probably supported by his agent, and his employers.

Right now Blackburn Rovers reputation is one of severely damaged goods.

Was Chris Coleman doing the MU match for Sky? If so I suspect they went out on a bender afterwards. Allegedly (from a Cottage regular) CC had a reputation for post-match visits to Kings Road hostelries and doubtless Baldy was in tow then.

Nicko via Mirror says Kean is off to India today for meeting. Nothing about him leaving unfortunately.

Wonder if he went over there to explain why he thinks signing RSC is a good idea.

If RSC does not arrive on a free and then sign a Pay as you Play contract, I can't see how it would benefit Rovers at all.
