  1. 1. Should Steve Kean stay or go

Recommended Posts

So yet again in the space of an hour or two we have teo people with 'inside knowledge' telling us two different things.

Kean's getting sacked or Kean's being dropped to number 2 with rafa coming in.

Is it any surprise that people question sources!!

Was that aimed at me Alf? You might be confusing me with Someone who was anti Allardyce. Plus, as you are so fond of pointing out, I was 12000 miles away.

Nope I was generalising..... but if the cap fits Skippy... :P

Tell you what, if he keeps us up they'll struggle to get rid Kelbo, he makes himself unsackable.

Rubbish Gav.....Means nowt. Remember what happened to Allardyce after all he'd done.

Just wait and see, you heard it here first, no more than that!

Hope you are right. There's a cunning plan afoot------we beat Birmingham tomorrow and there'll be loads of posts proclaiming Kean a genius. He's the man who's saving us from relegation! We can't sack him now! :tu:

He does? We'd never even be in danger of going down if it wasn't for Kean. When Venkys sacked Allardyce I can only imagine it was because they wanted as good or better with a more attractive style of football, i.e. pass our way firmly into the top half. Even if Kean keeps us up what will they have gotten instead? A stressful, long-winded battle, frequently on the brink of despair, that by the grace of god narrowly avoiding falling into an abyss of possibly decades in the lower leagues. They would have to be truly barmy to then say "Great stuff Steve, have another go next season!".

beautifully put sir!

When Kean came in he said that the owners were targeting a top ten finish this season and making a real push for Europa League (formerly known as the Uefa Cup) the following season. It's going to take some very decent and quite frankly unexpected results for us to get a top 10 finish.

I think the chances of Kean going at the end of the season are quite high.

I hope the Rafa rumours aren't true. I've never been a fan of his especially in regards to his over-rotation policy and his ability to spend money wisely.

If Venky's are prepared to spend big money and bring in a proper manager there are better ones out there.

Realistically...who?!

I wouldnt have even put Rafa in the realistic category, but the bookies seem to suggest otherwise...and he does want to come back to the PL and knows the North West well.

I wouldn't want to speculate on particular names and at the end of the day it's the club that will make the decision on any new possible manager. I have no idea who would be interested or what offers would be on the table, then again neither do any of us.

If they do decide to end Kean's tenure as manager, whether by moving him into an assistant role or severing his ties with the club altogether they will need to carry out a proper process during the summer, something we did not see at all when Allardyce left. They will have to identify who would be interested with the job, interviewing them and then deciding on which manager they see as being the most suitable.

If we retain our premier league status then that alone will get some managers interested, the chance to manage in one of the best leagues in the world. A lot will also depend on how ambitious the owners are, something none of us know yet.

I must admit I'd be looking for a change in the summer also, regardless of what happens between now and the end of the season, but can we justify complaining if he keeps us up and stays on as manager?

Justifiably yes. Barely surviving this season was never on the agenda, even before new owners and 5 million quid investment. Many on here could have kept us up from the position we were in when Kean took charge, so how does he gain any plaudits if we only just manage to stay up? He will be viewed quite rightly as the man who nearly took us down if that is how it all pans out.

In Kean's defence, I fully appreciate that it was always going to take time to adjust our playing style and squad. However, most would have understood gradual changes and a step by step approach, but this did not materialise and the lack of points gained by trying to change too many things way too quickly are the reason we are currently in trouble. Kean must take responsibility for the matches he has been in charge of and without any history or previous achievements for fans to assess and judge his capabilities, must therefore be judged purely on the results and points gained to date.

Results wise, if Kean & the team finish the season strongly then overall you could fairly say he deserves the right to stay on as manager - there are still plenty of points to play for (I am aware we have some fairly difficult fixtures coming up however just stating the point) - by the way, I am referring to if he wins 4-5 games.

It would be a dramatic turnaround though (obviously).

I'm not sure Hughes or Allardyce would have been blamed if they'd taken us down, we'd have blamed the previous managers respectively.

But Kean has tried to change things to quickly, no doubt about that, and I would imagine if given some of those games back, he'd have done things differently.

I also happen to believe we have a poor team currently also, certainly one of the worst in recent times. You can point towards 10th positions and cup semi finals, but watching us week in week says our current squad is poor, that needs addressing.

This all goes without saying, however I can guarantee there will not be one manager who has achieved all that Rafa has in the game who would be remotely interested in joining a team with crazy owners who has just scraped survival.

Rafa would represent a massive, massive coup.

Cheque book manager, but stranger things have happened, I think

I have heard that Benitez is being lined up to be our manager next season (meeting already taken place) with kean moving to be his no 2 and jensen to become 1st team coach. Obviously this all depends on if we stay up or not. That way kean is not being fired from his 2.5 year contract and no severance pay will need to be paid out!

It would be in breach of his contract and he could take them for a lot. This isn't america you can't just move him to assistant manager when he is employed as a manager and has a contract detailing his role, then bring in someone else. Same with JJ, although it might be easier as he would be employed as a team coach I would imagine.

Benitez rumour has been around for about a month or 2 now, ever since Kean hit the ropes big time, however I still fail to see Venky's paying him the money he would require and then giving him the budget he would require.

No more so than any other manager who has won both major European trophies, finished ahead of Barca and Real to win La Liga twice, turned.a Liverpool side who mostly hovered around UEFA places into a top 4 fixture and a regular CL latter stages participant. I'm not sure quite how a manager who managed to sign so many average players for Liverpool got so much success, but the results speak for themselves.

Chequebook manager? Martin O Neill. Spent 130 million, recouped 40 million, didn't achieve that much and then left because he didn't have enough money to spend.

Benitez. The guy who tried flogging Alonso to Juventus all season just so he could bring in Gareth Barry, which failed, which left him with one ###### off very good player who then refused to stay with the club. Like others have said, cheque book manager at it's finest.

I would be really shock if Rafa came to rovers. wouldn't he want to bring in is own backroom team like he did at Liverpool and Inter Milan???

Also I wouldn't be surprise if the owners did change manager if a very good manager became available in the summer.

But I still think that the owners will stick by Kean. They have so far and through a very bad run.

Also what is the owners aim for next season? do they want top 6? how much is available to spend? Who will be decide on transfer targets and doing the transfer negotiation? are we going to use JA and Kentaro in this?

That's why I don't think he will come to rovers. Rafa will want big money to spend. I would like to see a British manager bought in personally if we are going to get rid of Kean!

But still can't see the owners getting rid of Kean tho.

How many managers have won La Liga twice, got into the top 4 repeatedly, made two CL finals and won a UEFA Cup without hefty use of the chequebook?

We can point to mistakes any manager has made, god knows SAF has made plenty. But it astounds me there's so many Rovers fans who, even in our current state, would be against one of Europes most successful managers joining the club.

IF Venkys have the money, I would be all over it. If not, he would be bad for a club like us.

Kean is already out at the seasons end, so no point discussing anymore thank god!,

Just heard a story, dont know the full truth in it, but it goes along those lines Kelbo. So, if true, then I'll give Steve Kean my full suppport from now on until the end of the season, breathing a massive sigh of relief come the end of it if we stay up.
