  1. 1. Should Steve Kean stay or go

Recommended Posts

Rafa spends a wedge on a high turnover of players. If he's lucky, they come off well (e.g. Alonso, Torres), but at Liverpool he did waste a whole load of cash on players that were never up to the task of winning the title as Bangkok Rovers pointed out. He also seemed to let the youth system wither and clog up the reserves with mediocrity.

He'd not be a terrible manager like Brian Kidd or Chris Waddle but for his salary, he would not be value for money. The question is if he takes over, would we be happy to be spending lots to be in the top 8 or so? If yes, then he'd probably be good. If you want to run your squad more efficiently, target transfers carefully etc. then go for someone else.

And his style has been seen as too defensive at times too...............

IF Venkys have the money, I would be all over it. If not, he would be bad for a club like us.

Sooner have him over Martin O Neill, surely.

He is brilliant in the transfer market

Alberto Aquilani (£17.1million),

Andrea Dossena (£7m),

Robbie Keane (£19m),

Albert Riera (£8m),

Martin Skrtel (£6.5m),

Ryan Babel (£11.5m),

Craig Bellamy (£6m),

Jermaine Pennant (£6.7m),

Mohamed Sissoko (£5.6m),

Luis Garcia (£6m),

Fernando Morientes (£6.3m

Cheers

Yet despite that, he's been very successful. He must be very good at getting the most out of mediocre players then.

Its worth noting a lot of those players were shifted back for fairly big fees too. O Neill spent a surplus of almost 100 million at Villa and achieved sod all of significance.

Surley there is more to chose from than these two? I agree with you and would just about prefer Raffa over O'neil but why are we limitting it to these two?

Would much rather have someone with a bit more hunger. If we have the money to satisfy Benitex then go for someone up and comming but with some experience like Coyle. He proved when leaveing Burnely for Bolton he will move on if there is a carer further opertunity.

Two players highlighted were both sold for a profit, the other two were/ are successes for Liverpool.

Ok how about:

Reina- £6 million

Torres- £20 million (sold for £50 million)

Alonso- £11 million (sold for £30 million)

Javier Mascherano- £20 million

There is no way Benitez can be classed as a cheque book manager IMO, compare his spending to the top 4 and Wenger comes on top and no one else.

Took us a long time to find one set of owners, my money is on them staying for a while yet and honestly cant see Kean getting the sack anytime soon either... but I suppose you never know.

Lets be honest he is not likely to say the opposite to that. He is also the only manager of Rovers - in modern times to have suffered a 7 1 defeat to man u. That is also on his record.

What a good job the directors in the seventies weren't as pathetic as the Rao family. If they had been no doubt Gordon Lee would have been sacked after 6-3 defeat at Hereford - and that was the season we won the Third Division Championship. I don't seem to recall that the Tottenham directors ditched the legendary Bill Nicholson when we thrashed them 7-2 at Ewood.

Fortunately, Jack had more backbone that Mrs. Desai when he stood by Kenny and Ray when we lost six on the trot and seemed destined to miss out on promotion in 1991-92. The whole history of the club might have been different if Jack had shown the same stupid attitude as our wonderful lady owner in India.

You can argue about Sam all you like but the facts remain unaltered. He saved us in his first season, took us to tenth in his second season and I have no doubt he would have had us safe by now he was still in post. I would happily take a 7-1 hammering at Old Trafford, and I was there Pafell, every season in exchange for finishing tenth or better in the Premier League every season.

You and a few others keep falling back on that like drowning men clutching at straws. It's a pathetic little default position given that the week before MU we beat Villa and the week after we beat Wolves! How much would you give for 6 points out of the next 3 matches now Pafell? Just let it bloody drop it's boring!!!

So who is the perfect BRFC manager anyway?

KMD with our millionaire squad got dumped out of Europe by the amateurs of Trelleborgs, a year later they ended up scrapping in the Champions League before being dumped out in disgrace. Mark Hughes showed himself and the team up at Villa park when we could have qualified for Europe yet we lost 4-1, Hughes had a crap semi final too at Cardiff that earned us the title Blackeye Rovers. Would you have either of them back? Course you would.

Please get it into your head that one result means sweet FA in football.

I think one or two of you are misunderstanding my post. I was happy with Sam at times - he was good at what he did. did a good job with Rovers no doubt. I am only responding to something he has been quoted as saying. He is not likely to say in any interview, "if I was still at rovers, I also would be in a relegation battle".

No manager is perfect.

So yet again in the space of an hour or two we have teo people with 'inside knowledge' telling us two different things.

Kean's getting sacked or Kean's being dropped to number 2 with rafa coming in.

Is it any surprise that people question sources!!

Correct

I am not and never have been a Sam hater.

The only way Benitez will accept the job would be conditional on him having 100% control of transfers and a large transfer pot to spend. It would prove Venkys are taking it seriously and i'd be happy with that.

Benitez rumour has been around for about a month or 2 now, ever since Kean hit the ropes big time, however I still fail to see Venky's paying him the money he would require and then giving him the budget he would require.

Indeed modes. 'Eees betta, eees cheeepa' seems to be the motto of our owners.

How many managers have won La Liga twice, got into the top 4 repeatedly, made two CL finals and won a UEFA Cup without hefty use of the chequebook?

We can point to mistakes any manager has made, god knows SAF has made plenty. But it astounds me there's so many Rovers fans who, even in our current state, would be against one of Europes most successful managers joining the club.

He simply wouldn't fit in here Doc. Square peg and round hole.

Just heard a story, dont know the full truth in it, but it goes along those lines Kelbo. So, if true, then I'll give Steve Kean my full suppport from now on until the end of the season, breathing a massive sigh of relief come the end of it if we stay up.

Not the most motivational situation for a manager of a relegation threatened club with games runniong out imho.

Still if I suspect Samba and Nelsen are running the show then who gives one? :rover:

You speak like it's one or the other. Personally I sincerely hope that we can see past choosing between those two plonkers.

That was "funny" the first 8 times you used it. It's getting as bad as Lancs Utd now though!

So to summarise the last 4 or so pages that I've just read

Kean is getting sacked

Kean is not getting sacked, he's getting demoted

Rafa Benitez will be our manager next year

We're getting new owners

Phew, sure ain't boring round here any more. Almost a shame these bloody football matches keep getting the way of all this excitement

To add to those Andy Gray comments, he was rather pessimistic about our chances of staying up. He says, "if you take away the point at Arsenal from the last 6 games, Rovers lost the other 5. He looked at our home games including Man City and Man Utd and wasn't at all optimistic.

Fair to say Gray's a neutral?

So dubdubdub, I don't know what football you think is better.

If it's any consolation Gray would probably have predicted Arsenal 3 Rovers 0.

That's surely a conservative estimate - most of us were predicting more and so would he have or at least asked whether we could avoid a cricket score against us.

Would the likes of Fergie, Cloughie, Paisley, Shankley have done this ?

I don't think so.

IMO, weak management, just 'indulging' the players.

To me it reads, I get a juicy paycheck if Rovers stay up, the team is responding to senior players more than me at the moment let's work on that.

Hardly rocket science to ask your more experienced player's to fire up the youth for an important match.

Your point is?

Yep---the senior players are doing his job for him. Just as well!

Of course, if that article had been about Kean saying he'd do it his way you'd be on his case for that as well.

I'm sorry? Their wives have a say in what time they start training? What the dickens is this? If my husband was paid the kind of money these guys get he could start training at 5am. Can't believe that

Otherwise, this is a good initiative and the sort of thing I'd have taken as should be common practice.
