Backroom Tom Posted April 14, 2011 Backroom Posted April 14, 2011 I cringe at the thought of no Nelson and no Jones at the back. And Jones is our best defender, and it's his best position. But then I equally cringe at the thought of how our midfield will line up without Jones For me it's too early to say Jones is our best defender although he is more than able to play there.

Exiled_Rover Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 It's no issue if Givet decides he wants to play. Move Phil Jones back to centre back, shift Givet to left back and move Olsson back into midfield (where he's 15 times better).
ABBEY Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 if they hadnt have sacked sam this would never have happened .
Amo Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 It's a blow to lose someone of Nelsen's experience and leadership for our run-in but Jones was a revelation last season and should have improved his technique playing in midfield. If Givet gets his head on straight, we could have our strongest back four.
JAL Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Sorry for Ryan, good for us. Might call me a complete loona, but I really think Ryan isn't our top performer anymore. With Jones there, we have more speed and more quality, plus some extra midfield space for Dunn. I'm with you on this Daremz, Phil Jones is more than capable, and more than ready to step into the admirals boots which is lucky for us for us to have such a young local highly talented player amongst our ranks. arte et labore
JAL Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 The club needs all its best players available from now to the end of the season so this is another potential nail in the Rovers coffin. Is there life left in the corpse or will Rovers miraculously escape the deathly clutches of relegation ? Understand what your saying jim mk2, but I don't see losing the ageingly slow Ryan Nelsen when we've a highly talented youngster to step into the breach. All I see is that this is a plus for Rovers.
Mercer Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Samba at times is still a loose cannon - for more stable with 'The Admiral' next to him. Will be a huge, huge miss and, possibly, the final nail in the coffin.

67splitscreen Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 When the tough get going. Did Benjani not play in a wider role for City, pretty sure he was wide in a three when he came on against us a couple of seasons ago. Making it something along these lines. Hoilett and Benjani switching if need be. Olsson has the energy for the the MF and gives his all, can still overlap and get forward from in front of Jones. Dunny in the MF is pretty slow going at times, same with MGP. Even Neville will pass him in a canter. -----------------------Robbo Salgado-----Samba----Jones-----Givet ---------------------J Jones -----------Emerton-------Olsson ---Hoilett---------------------------Benjani --------------------Kalinic /RSC

Parsonblue Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Personally, I think that not only will we miss Nelsen's leadership and organisational qualities but moving Phil Jones back to defence will rob us of his drive in midfield. I felt we looked worse in midfield on Saturday once Jones had dropped further back. With Nzonzi suspended and Nelsen injured, Kean badly needs to make sure that Givet is playing on Saturday.

yeti-dog Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Could be a blessing in disguise,we have been leaking goals after all. If young Jones manages to plug that then I'm prepared to lose what he gives us in midfield. If we keep somw clean sheets we can nick a win here and there. I'd go for: Robinson Salgado......Jones.....Samba....Givet Hoilett..Emerton...J,Jones...Pedersen...Olsson ................Cruz.....................
Beta Ray Bill Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Do you get the feeling Nelsen's been patched up until the club was comfortable that Jones was fit enough? We are now very precariously balanced in personnel available. One more injury at the back - Samba to drill into his own big toe to relieve blood blister? - and we've had it. Speaking of Samba, is Jones experienced enough to cover for his moments of lunacy?
John Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Good idea from Kean. "We will get him on a pair of crutches and in the dressing room because we want to have his voice even if we can’t get him on the pitch.”
Bobby G Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Hahahaha...Maybe he should focus on getting us winning on the pitch before trying to be so thoughtful!
Hughesy Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 I've witnessed the opposite. Samba seems calmer when Phil Jones is alongside him. Agreed - the amount of times has to cover for Nelsen after he gets pulled out of position or clear up his mistakes is alarming. As Jal said - Nelsen is ageing and going slower and slower....also his distribution has to be one of the worst in the team, he just lumps it forward anywhere. If it is Jones & Samba - they will keep 3 clean sheets from now till end of the season

True Blue & White Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Brilliant Servant, deserves a testimonial but this has to be his last season as first choice centre back I'm afraid.
booth Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 If it is Jones & Samba - they will keep 3 clean sheets from now till end of the season I didn't want to post that as I didn't want to tempt fate. But as you did I will point out that young Jones was one of the main reasons for our good run at the end of last season. Including good draws against Man Utd and Liverpool.

Hughesy Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Sorry, but the only reason Nelsen is usually out of position is to cover the place where Samba should be. What when he gets pulled out wide left?? The amount of times Nelsen gets caught out of position or murdered for pace is clear for all to see, it gets regularly commented on at home games around where we sit.
philipl Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Horrific to be without the Admiral in this situation. The only plus is that the Samba/Jones combination looked rock solid after Nelsen went off. We are now down to bare bones with so many players out and cannot afford any new injuries or suspensions in the run in. Keam has also got to get his digit out and get Givet and Kalinic back into the squad and fully motivated- we can no longer afford having any players out of the reckoning because a rooky manager has screwed up on his man management.

To be fair, and as easy as it is to blame Kean for everything from climate change to child labour, this Givet issue has been bubbling for a long time and I doubt his frame of mind would be much different whoever the manager is..

Strange that, the main topic of conversation around where I sit (with regards central defence) is "where on earth is Samba now?" I get the impression you were savaged by some New Zealand lamb as a kid and hold it against anyone from the Land of the Long Wide Cloud.
