[Archived] MESSAGE TO VENKYS

Recommended Posts

I never liked that Barry Kilby and his puppet Brendon Flood.

Barry Kilby is quite a nice guy actually and was most hospitable to my father on his 90th as an ex Burnley player, we were wined dined and had the finest seats at Turf Moor.

But you are a mile off with Barry or indeed Brendan who I do know quite well!!

Strangely enough, the Cheif scout who took both myself and Kevin Hird to Rovers as kids was Harold Readett a full back at Burnley in the same team as my father, both my father and I are lifelong Rovers fans, as was I believe Barry Kilbys son during Kennys reign!!

To whom it may concern,

As a Blackburn fan I am extremely concerned about the long term future of the club I support, and I wish to offer my opinion on what needs to be done in order to make your recent aquisition succeed. I apologise if I adopt a slightly patronising tone, but as the world of football is a whole new area for Venky's/VH Group, I'd like to give a view of what the fans of Blackburn Rovers Football Club are thinking. Many of us are very worried indeed about the way the club is being run, especially with regards to two people in particular-Jerome Anderson and Steve Kean.

Mr. Anderson is a well known agent in British football, and there is some questions over the influence he has over contract negotiations, staff appointments and so on. From the outside,it looks like a powerful football agent has far too much influence over issues such as player and coaching recruitment, and indeed too strong a hold over those at the Venky's group who deal with Blackburn Rovers. I am not privvy to any details of your arrangement with Mr. Anderson, but whatever it is, he should have no say whatsoever in the day-to-day running of the football club, or recruitment issues. As an agent, he has a singular concern, that is to get the best deal for whoever he represents, and not for any club his client is contracted to. An agent, however charming and pleasant they may be has one driving ambition-to make money for themselves and their clients.

This leads me to the next issue, that of the manager. Steve Kean may be a nice, smooth talking gentleman, but as a football manager, he is frankly useless. The results speak for themself, and it is appalling that a team that finished 10th the previous season find themselves on a long run of form of miserable results, and in danger of relegation. Mrs. Desai admitted that she knew nothing about football when your organisation took over Blackburn Rovers, so I'll put it simply-Steve Kean should not be manager of Blackburn Rovers. He is tactically naive, he cannot make the right call over subsititions, and has been offering contracts to players who are simply not good enough to play for a team with ambitions of Premier League football, let alone one that wants to challenge for a top 6 place. Kean may be represented by Jerome Anderson (which is seen as another idicator of Anderson's insidious influence), but that should not cloud your judgement in appointing an experienced and talented manager regardless of whether we get relegated.

The third and final topic is the playing squad. This is not really a stick I'm going to beat you with, but more of a plea. Firstly, should we avoid relegation, there are a few players that must stay. They are Paul Jones, 'Junior' Hoilett, Martin Olsson, Paul Robinson and Chris Samba. This is the core of a very good team, and to lose 2 of these would be a huge blow, especially if one of those is Paul Jones. Due to a real lack of investment by our previous owners, The Walker Trust, the quality of the rest of the squad is average at best, and could easily be moved on and replaced. Again, this links in with why Steve Kean should not be manager, as stories that he seeks to offer Roque Santa Cruz a contract, as well as Benjiani show a complete lack of judgement about players' abilities. Both these strikers are ageing, injury prone and simply a waste of the club's and your money. The same goes for Jason Roberts, who tries hard, but is not fit for purpose. With the 3 strikers mentioned, the next season will be as bad as the second half of this season. All this is to say, if your intentions are to build a winning team that puts the Venky's brand in the public sphere in a positive light, you MUST relieve Steve Kean of his managerial duties.

So to summarise, for your takeover to work next season you must:

1. Get rid of that pernicious parasite Jerome Anderson.

2. Bring in a competent manager in place of Steve Kean (and don't ask Anderson anything about this matter).

3. Fight to keep our good young players, and try to resist cashing in on them.

4. When the new manager comes in next season, give them money to improve what is a pretty poor squad in terms of quality.

Sorry that e-mail is so long, and that some of the recipients may have no say in these matters, but I believe I should make the effort in telling you what a vast majority of fans are thinking.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I said I could feel an e-mail coming on. Sure, nowt will happen, and you'll probably find many faults with what I wrote, but I do feel a bit better for it. They'll get a 'you can shove your chickens.....' e-mail if we go down and Kean and Anderson remain in place, but for now, I'll be constructive.

I think it's one thing airing your concerns on the manager but telling them which players to keep and slagging off other players is a bit unfair IMO.

If they replace the manager with someone better then he should have full control over that.

Haven't posted much this year, but let me give the Desais my take.

Why did you buy Blackburn Rovers? Was it to introduce the brand of Venky's to the UK? IF so- well done, you've done that. Unfortunately your other decisions have meant that the brand is tainted in two ways:

For Blackburn Rovers fans not on happy pills, it's a brand we'd rather die than eat;

For non-Blackburn Rovers fans it's a laughing stock.

Working as a forensic accountant for one of the big 4 accounting firms, the comment I've most often heard is "if all of their business decisions are as bad as the one to sack Sam Allardyce, we would have a field day with their books" Not suggesting they're corrupt- a lack of knowledge can lead to the bad business decisions which lead to questionable transactions- quite often it's the main cause.

The major issue is Kentaro. I appreciate you need help as you clearly do not understand football, but your best bet would have been to stick with John Williams- a football man through and through rather than employ an agency who are a) conflicted and b)clearly out of their depth.

Your worst decision? Sam Allardyce. Some people may not have liked the style of football, but we would NOT have been in this position were he still in place. Steve Kean (although being a Celtic fan I was almost disposed to like him at first)is a footballing naive. He hasn't the slightest clue how to manage a Premier League side and is- in fact- as bad as Paul Ince- which is something I never thought I'd say. He will NEVER make a Premier League manager in terms of competence or tactical ability- that much is clear.

On my own part, I've been a season ticket holder for nearly 20 years. This season I stopped going for personal reasons after a bereavement in October. I've felt ready to attend games from about February but the certain knowledge that I'd have a 420 mile round trip to watch an ill-prepared team lose to all comers has stopped me. I haven't even gone to London games- 2 of which are within 3 miles of me- because I don't particularly want to go and simply be unhappy at the game I love(d).

Next season- whether I get a season ticket will be down to two things.

1) Will Steve Kean still be manager? If he is- not a chance

2) Are Kentaro still involved? If they are but we have employed a non-Kentaro/competent manager (what is Allardyce doing again???) I will. If they are and Kean is still manager- not a chance

Finances don't affect me- in that I'm lucky, so a price rise in itself would not be a deciding factor. However I have been feeling dissociated from the club since the takeover and subsequent events and I struggle to even watch televised games- there are so many better things I am doing with my time now. It will make some major business decisions and bravery on the part of Venkys to change that.

We were a well-run, well respected club before Venky's took over. Now we're a laughing stock. This is already being used as a case study of how to damage your brand in only a few months. Well done Mrs Desai!

You're probably right TCO. I was just trying to highlight how crap Kean is in his judgement and educate them about the state of the squad, since they are new to the game. I was also trying to put across the fans' opinions on players. It's not as if I'll get an e-mail on Monday saying, 'Good lord you're right. Here's the job of chairman.' is it though? Mind you, I did sign up to one of those job hunting websites and got an e-mail asking if I wanted to join Mi5 as an Information Officer!

Got a reply, stating they are not 'encouraging any agents next transfer window', and that Phil Jones is not for sale. So I replied to that with:

----------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Vineeth Rao,

Thank you for replying to my post, and understanding I meant Phil Jones, who I called Paul for some strange reason. The opinions expressed within my post are quite common amongst the fans, especially in regards to Messers Kean, Anderson and the players mentioned. The purpose of my last e-mail was to bring such opinions to your attention. With regards to the point about the playing squad, the final choice should be that of the manager, whomever you should decide is good enough to take us into next season. As for the managerial position itself, I don't like calling for someone to lose their job, but sport is an emotional subject, and without changes there will be a lot of very unhappy people, which in turn may damage the Venky's brand.

----------------------------------------------------

They're probably sick of me e-mailing them by now.
