You never see an 'apology' in a paper and think 'their lawyers have been all over that'. ?

That's the point. They had evidence to the contrary and therefore could be sued for printing lies.

Check out "See you in court" on iplayer to see how far they will go to avoid printing an apology. They don't like doing it.

Thought libel law meant that those suing don't need to provide proof, just that 'their good name was being questioned'?

Not at all. You need a lot of money and proof.

The documentary doesn't appear to be on iplayer anymore but it was regarding this:

The Daily Mail really are scum. The guy received many death threats as a result of a blatant lie.

Just to put the legal element here, Libel is written and slander is verbal, you need to prove that what has been written or said is untrue, thats why Becks is having a tough time, he has to prove the allegations are untrue.

That is what I was saying.

Thanks

It was complete and utter bunkum Matty, made up cr@p, they had to retract the story, simple as that, no arguement or debate to be had.

Wait I don't understand why Mrs Desai would deny being in London if she really was there? All it would have took was for someone to see them and they would be shown as liars.

It wouldn't make any sense to pretend they weren't there if they were.

Think you may be confused with defamation of character.

'Quote'

Defamation of character happens when someone says, or writes, something untrue about you (or your business or product) which is damaging to your reputation (or that of your business).

The false information needs to be about the characteristics of a person (or their business or product). It must cause damage to the image of that person.

I'm reading the replies and counter replies on this thread and it just goes to highlight and to some extent reflect the total chaos and confusion our club has been nearly drowned in over these last six months.

NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT THE CHUFFIN HELL IS GOING ON!

Sources close to The Mersey Juror have confirmed that Liverpool’s move for defender Phil Jones is likely to get tied up in the next few days. The Blackburn Rovers starlet spent time at Melwood today being shown the facilities and it’s now just a case of dotting i’s and crossing t’s. Jones is certianly one for the future and fits into Liverpool’s new approach of buying young British players, with Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson also high on Dalglish’s hit list.

Sky Bet have slashed the odds on Phil Jones moving to Anfield from 5/1 to 4/5.

I can accept there comes a time for players to move on etc, however hopefully that is not true :(

Think Phil Jones has a great future in the game IF he stays fit AND develops further. £16m is alot of money for someone who has managed half a season (although looked very good) in the Premiership. Wish he would stay, but do you blame the lad for getting out with what is going on at Ewood!

I wouldn't feel quite so depressed if I didn't think we where going to waste the proceeds on some over priced crap (if it actually gets spent at all).

It's like a co-ordinated mud slinging exercise conducted by the likes of you, BPF and Kelbo under the pretence of having some "inside information" - throw enough and some will stick. However there is absolutely no evidence to suggest any of this crap is actually based on fact. It's absolutely pathetic.

I have essentially for the last three or four weeks, intentionally refrained from posting things of which I am aware and could qualify but I wont as I trust my friends who pass on information, however, I have never met you Tris, you seem half intelligent, so I will leave you with this little cunundrum.

Newspapers in all corners of the earth are there to find front page or back page stories, they hound them out, leave no stone unturned, doesnt matter who they may harm and football people who have been hurt will normally have their mugshot and story splattered over the back page, it is very strange in my opinion, both Sam Allardyce and Neil McDonald have to date not spoken openly to the media about the circumstances nor how they really felt about the situation, neither did John Williams and it appears as though the same will apply to Tom Finn. I personally know of the distress caused to both Allardyce and JW and yet they have remained tight lipped and have refrained from saying anything defamatory about Rovers, Kean or their owners, given that JW said he got on well with Kean until Kean became manager and that is all.

Now if ever there was a story a newspaper would be looking at would be the turmoil Rovers were in at the time (and still are IMO)

I ask you and indeed any member of this messageboard to read the above and draw your conclusions, on this matter, I know nothing, but common sense prevails, there must be a reason why nothing has been reported with the sensationalism of back page journalism, which is normally the case in situations such as these.

Clauses in the pay off contract is the first thing that springs to my mind.

Please everyone cheer up, we all know what is going to happen as soon as one of our players shows even an ounce of promise.

We should know better by now. Why get upset about something that is BOUND to happen? He will not be the first nor the last.

Sad state of affairs - the lure of Champions League football and all that jazz.

On a bright side this transfer will give us pages and pages of untold hundreds of seemingly random players being linked to us, and we have the joy of saying why they are the worst player we have ever seen or similar. Then volumes of pages enquiring of our "In The Know" sources if said players interest is true.

Ahhhhh. Now there is something to make you feel better about the loss.

Grab some bath salts, some candles, some wine and dream of what rough beast slouches towards Ewood to be born.

Got to say Rebel, you do make me smile, despite the clubs plight!!
