I know people are referring to Henderson and saying that as he's going for £20m jones should be going for more. I bet Sunderland fans are saying the opposite though and that liverpool should be paying more for Henderson. Attacking players always go for more money, it's a simple fact.

True, but English players price tags are usually grossly inflated, plus the fact most of the top clubs in England are seemingly after Jones illustrates how talented he is.

Liverpool will be a superb choice for Jones.

Dalglish has a fantastic presence and aura whilst Steve Clarke is a first rate coach with a track record to match and both of them will ensure that Jones progresses at a rapid rate of knots.

Dalglish & Clarke v. Stephen Kean and Jensen. Hmmm!

It's bad enough you feel the need to try to belittle the manager but you're not even original and have to use JALs pathetic methods.

I wish you'd bugger off and support them.

May I ask where you get your stories from?

Put up, or shut up.

I've said it before; but it really wouldn't surprise me if you were that knob who asked Steve Kean when he was going to resign.

So. Are you that knob?

If he was I'd like to shake his hand.

Not much difference to me between the 2 statements.

Whilst your better players always appear to move on these days, Jones has not played enough not to feel hard done by if he does leave this summer - whoever agreed to the £16 million clause has sold us short IMO, especially when you see Liverpool apparently bidding £20 million for Henderson of Sunderland.

I know it is easy to shrug the shoulders and say we will sign someone to replace him, but in my view, he is a class act and pleasure to watch him play - whilst I accept it is the reality of modern day football it will be painful if he leaves, this summer, after such a short stint playing in the first team.

Its obviously Jones (or his agent) who insisted on that clause. At the time Jones' signing of a new 5 year contract was held up on here as proof that all in the garden was lovely and the players loved playing for Kean. Same with Samba and he wants to go too!

So much damage from this single bizarre decision from Venkys.

I believe Liverpool will do well next season. Make a change form Man u, Chelsea, Arsenal. Man city / liverpool challenging for a top 4 spot. All these clubs, I also believe, will be spending big during this summer.

A lesser clause was inserted by the Trust according to Cryer

I agree with you.

If I was a professional footballer of Phil's age and quality it would be Liverpool I would be most interested in.

Arsenal would be the least. I can see them dropping out of the top 4 next year.

I may have been swept along by the Liverpool bandwagon but I think they will do very well next season.

Oh! That's OK then? If true it just means that his value has shot up in recent months and that under the Trust we would always be selling our best players to balance the books.

He wanted a bloody clause. Should we have not given him a contract and see him go for less?

The question is-would he have demanded a clause if we had a decent manager and a supportive and tested admin? I'm still going back to the decision to appoint Kean, notice.

Do you think the Trust slipped the first one in without his knowledge?

We aren't Man Utd. I don't think we ever will be.

Like Santa and Bellamy did under Hughes(a decent manager and a supportive and tested admin)?

I cant see it being inserted because Jones was worried about an inexperienced manager.

I could be wrong - but though they will do better than this season - can't help but feel that the initial Dalglish honeymoon will wane next season. Having watched some of their matches - couldn't help but feel that they had the rub of the green in a number of matches - and some of the results masked deficiences in the team. IMO - a lot will depend on Carroll - he could make all the difference.

Lets not forget - a central defence of Samba and Jones at Rovers could be the platform for a very good season for Rovers. It is also an excellent platform for Jones - who has quickly become a big fish in a small pond. I sincerely believe he should stay at Rovers - gain further experience and then move to one of the big clubs as a first choice - rather than potentially sitting on the subs bench. The team that finished last season - plus a couple of quality additions - could easily do well in the cup competitions - and aim higher up the league. What better way for Jones to sign off his Rovers career - than an FA Cup win ? Ah well I can dream - looks like his head has been turned - just hope he is getting good advice from his family.

The real motive we wont or never will know. Just cant help feeling that whoever was at the club, knew there was genuine interest in Jones at the time (Chelsea think) they thought, yes, they will take that amount for the lad.

We all know that Bells would never have signed without that clause.

Exactly, and he knew and respected Hughes from his time as Wales manager. Yet he still insisted on the release clause.

BangkokRover.

If a club wants to strengthen the playing staff, they should start with replacing the weaknesses in the squad, rather than replacing the better players. That's how successful teams build sides. There's only one outcome from continually selling your best players.

I totally agree, but I suppose if you look across the league which clubs have managed to hold onto their best players? The three established Champions League clubs, Liverpool, Spurs and Man City (although Man Utd took Carrick and Berbatov off Tottenham in the last five years so it's not all rosy for them, and Torres and Mascherano - arguably two of the Scouser's best three players - left Liverpool last year). Villa are a big club with a lot of cash but they lost both Milner and Barry to Man City over recent seasons.

The only team I can think of which has made a decent fist of holding onto players against the odds in a similar position to us is Eveton. And even then they lost both Lescott to City and as recently as the last window Stephen Pienaar.

Clearly it is an endemic problem across the league and not specific to Rovers.

All that said I have to say I really thought Phil would be at Rovers for at least one more season. Losing the likes of Bellamy, Bentley, Santa Cruz and Duff was one thing - they were all later in their careers and it was arguably the right time for them to move on. But Jones is just starting out..... it's a new low for sure.

I would much rather Jones went to Arsenal than any of the other clubs linked.

Posted

Id rather he goes to Arsenal personally, but least of all I would want Dalglish taking our players.

Its a shame this clause was set too low. Bottoms up to the genius who agreed to it being so low.
