vintageadidas Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 How is this Venky's and Steve Kean's fault? That is just plain wrong. The lad is going to the biggest club in the world, he will win lots, earn lots and be a somebody! His life will change - think he will have to cancel his lads holoday now as well, can't be smashed round Zante. Good luck to him and i am pretty sure we will see him in blue and white halves again. We will move on and the money could well set us up for the next few seasons. I am excited to see Formica, Rochina, Olsson, Hoilett and other academy players next season. Robbie Cotton training with the first team at 16 is big news, he is the next "Phil Jones". It is not that important to have a players of Phil Jones's level at thw back in a mid table team. Lets splash the cash on a quality striker.

den Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 United fans I have spoken to think they have got a bargain and that Rovers fans should be furious he's gone for such a low fee. Harry Rednapp was on sky sports at lunchtime. Spurs had tried to sign him. Rednapp said all the top clubs wanted him, not because he was English [as the reporter suggested], but because he had it all. Young, fast, strong and skilfull. He said he was a cert to play for and probably captain England. Venky's and Kean knew this and sold him at the first opportunity for a paltry £15/16m. Pathetic Rovers, absolutely pathetic.
broadsword Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 What planet are you on? The reason is that it's Man Utd. I reckon within a few months of next season he will be called up to the England squad and will be talked about in glowing terms. He doesn't get that here and never will. Not the same planet as you. Imy said he wanted to go, I asked how he could possibly know that. You said "logic". If you're told a club has bid for you, and your club has accepted it, you're on your way - it's very rare for a player to come back from talks and say "no thanks". What I was trying to point out, was that Jones may have been happy to stay for another year, Imy was saying that he wanted to go. I just asked for proof. Instead I get a load of snide nonsense off of you. But I expect no better from you. Your judgement has been shown to be impaired time and time again.
unsall Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 For the first time in 25 years I'm thinking the same thoughts Exiled,I'm really sorry to say too. Go and support the Dingles you muppet, and all the rest who are saying you might not get a season ticket, how can a club the size of ours stop anyone going to Man Utd,all you can do is get the most you can get,and 16 mil is a decent price.
BuckyRover Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Anybody bashing Venky's for this is a cretin. HE HAD A CLAUSE WHEN THEY BOUGHT THE CLUB. HE OBVIOUSLY ALWAYS SAW US AS A STEPPING A STONE. He probably saw that we had a good academy, thought he would get a few games then move on. Obviously not a fan. A 21st century footballer
imy9 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 You make me laugh, you really do. I'm a fairly logical kind of guy, I've not yet been able to deuce that Jones wanted to leave us before playing a full season. Has he been agitating for a move? Has he criticised the club in the media? Has he handed in a transfer request? Have there been rumours of him looking for a move? Is there any logical reason for a footballer who's still developing to forsake regular first team games in the premiership in order to warm the bench at Man Utd? Answer: no. There is a 16 million pound clause inserted in his contract, this would have been placed at the request of either Jones or his agent. He met Kean on Monday and stated if the figure reached 16 million he wanted to go- as said by Nicko. The actions of his missus on twitter reveal to me that she wants to join the big time as a WAG, we'll hear a lot of nonsense from Jones in the coming weeks but the thing to note is that he wanted to warm the bench at United rather than start for his 'beloved' club.

I reckon within a few months of next season he will be called up to the England squad and will be talked about in glowing terms. He doesn't get that here and never will. That is what angers me, the whole of English football is so outrageously biased. Well MANCHESTER UNITED are interested, that's that then, off you go son- even if it is sitting on the bench, you'll be in the England set up, you'll get the sponsors, the fat contract, the glamour. Lads like Phil Jones are just symptoms of the sick game we have in this country.

Calm down, maybe it's more his reaction to modern football? I don't share his view, but who knows? Plus, its probably an impulsive overreaction.
Wing Wizard Windy Miller Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 There is a 16 million pound clause inserted in his contract, this would have been placed at the request of either Jones or his agent. He met Kean on Monday and stated if the figure reached 16 million he wanted to go- as said by Nicko. Doesn't add up. Pretty sure the lad signed a 5 year deal last summer, it had 4 1/2 years to run when the 'extension' was negotiated. If there was no clause in the old contract and the club knew the big 4 were sniffing, why limit the clause at £16 mil? Why even put a clause in? If, as some are suggesting there was a lower clause and Jones was making noises about leaving...why would Jones/agent raise that fee? Surely from the player/agent view the lower the clause, the better salary negotiation. Goodness of their heart maybe? Conspiracy theorist heaven! IMO I think someone at the club has dropped a bollock on this one and completely underestimated the market.
Backroom Tom Posted June 8, 2011 Backroom Posted June 8, 2011 Thank you Venkys, once again. More like, thank you Phil Jones. I'm not sure whether I wish him well or not, he has been good for us but hasn't exactly given the club much service, at least he netted us a decent fee. We just have to hope Venkys are a lot better than the Trust when it comes to reinvesting
broadsword Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I think asking for a clause is a slight clue of future intentions. Wouldn't you say? I didn't know he'd asked for a clause. But thanks for pointing it out in your usual classy style.

Lads like Phil Jones are just symptoms of the sick game we have in this country. I wouldn't be surprised if they call him a future England captain on his debut. We just have to puff out our chests, ignore their sycophancy and remember that we discovered him. It's the best we are going to get. (at least until Man Utd go bust, Phil knows when this will happen).
SIMON GARNERS 194 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 What is worrying me is that there are sources suggesting that the fee is reported to be over or under 16m. This worries me because: A - We're getting paid in installments and add ons and won't see ALL the money up front PLEASE, in the name of God let this prove to be not the case!!

Rover & Out Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Makes me laugh when Man United win a title and the press will ask 'how do they do it? 'what makes United so special?' etc etc. Well nothing, they have just got themselves into a position that means they can buy and pay the very best- so they win trophies, so they get more and more glory hunting fans, so more top players want to go there, they win more trophies, the media and players think that every top player MUST go there and on and on it goes. It's a never ending cycle. United have essentially bought every trophy since the Beckham years. Who was the last player decent player to come out the United academy? Fletcher? Ferguson is a great manager but his job is as much like Football Manager as any other in the league.
RibbleValleyRover Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Anybody bashing Venky's for this is a cretin. A 21st century footballer Any proof of that? Cryer said he believed Jones had a clause before his contract extension, it's possible he might not have and only did when he signed the extension. He still had years to run on his previous contract, one has to wonder could we have got more without the clause. £16m is a bargain, two more years of development and experience and he will be worth at least twice that. The lad is a special player and could end up being one of the finest defenders of his generation. I can tell you now we won't get a player as good as him as a replacement.
BuckyRover Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I didn't know he'd asked for a clause. But thanks for pointing it out in your usual classy style. You are working on the assumption it might have been put in by the club of their own volition? Why would they do that? There isn't a single reason why a club would want to insert a release clause. Not one.
Emge Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Jones is from Preston isn't he? Never seemed to be a Rovers fan, he's never mentioned it I don't think.
