ALLARDYCE BACKS JONES TO SHINE AT UNITED

By Andy Hampson, Press Association Sport

Former Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce is convinced Manchester United are signing a star of the future in Phil Jones.

The Barclays Premier League champions are poised to complete a deal for the highly-rated 19-year-old after apparently beating off competition from rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.

Rovers are thought to have accepted an offer of around £16million and Jones is understood to have undergone a medical at United yesterday.

There has been no official confirmation from either club but it would now be a major surprise if the move was not ratified in the near future.

Allardyce, who is now at West Ham but handed Jones his Premier League debut in March last year, told BBC Sport: ``His mental strength and the abilities to cope with the pressure of the Premier League at such a young age stood out.

``He wasn't fazed, didn't look too nervous and was quite calm.

``That is very important going into the biggest league in the world at such a young age.

``I think he made his (Premier League) debut against Chelsea and was man of the match.

``His mental strength was always going to be good enough and that is one of the biggest factors if you are going to be a top, top player.

``I think eventually, with a little more experience, which is going to gain more quickly at Manchester United, he will ultimately become an England defender.''

Former Rovers forward Kevin Gallacher even believes United are getting a bargain, despite paying a high premium for a teenager with relatively little experience.

The Scot said: ``I think he's underpriced to be honest.

``He is already top quality and will only get better with the players that will be around him at Manchester United.''

Jones has now linked up with the England Under-21 squad in Denmark ahead of the European Championship.

He was joined there by Sunderland's Jordan Henderson, with whom he shares an agent and whose own high-profile move to Liverpool is thought to be imminent.

Jones is likely to be the first of a number of new faces at Old Trafford this summer as manager Sir Alex Ferguson freshens up his squad.

Aston Villa forward Ashley Young is thought to be a target and it was claimed today the player's representatives have met with United officials.

Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea are also on Ferguson's wanted list, in addition to Tottenham's Luka Modric and Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder.

Another defender, Raphael Varane of Lens, has also been linked.

Edwin van der Sar and Paul Scholes will not be part of the team next year having announced their retirements while striker Dimitar Berbatov's future is uncertain.

Bizarre, I've been getting disillusioned myself - it was last year as well too.

For me it's the arbitrary rules and decisions which FIFA seemingly don't want to do anything about. We have so many games decided by bad decisions that it's just bizarre and infuriating. What other sport has that? It just made me think; how could you not want to do anything about that when you actually could. It's wrong. It's especially galling that the world's governing body is so obviously corrupt as well.

There's obviously the unevenly playing field as well. What can any team apart from the major ones really hope to achieve in a season. A good cup run? Not get relegated? As my wife pointed out, it's like a game of monopoly where someone starts out with all the money.

I still don't mind footy, and I love Rovers and always will, but it's Darts for me as my primary sport these days; no egos, categorically no bad decisions, a level playing field for everyone and it's more exciting to be honest.

That's another large reason I missed out as well, corrupt at the top by the sounds of it, how do you not expect the corruption to then filter down. Ludicrous that one of the most popular sports in the world, if not the most still has no technology for whatever reason.

The other major one is the constant harrasment of referees etc, then they bang on about the respect the game campaign etc but choose to do nothing about punishing the individuals. (By individuals I mean pretty much every single person who plays professional football) Name me another sport where you can mouth off to the referee in groups without any punishment, at worst you might get a booking if you get really heated. There may be one I've missed but off the top of my head I can't think of one, not sure what American Football and Baseball etc are like.

I'm hugely into MMA these days, it's a fight and it's dog eat dog, they get plenty of bad calls in it, but you know what the majority of them do? Take it like a man and move on. If they got in the referee's face and had their team mates rush in shouting at him they'd be banned. If somebody who is literally in a fight can keep hold of their emotions then I'm pretty sure someone paid millions to kick a ball about can.

Going long way off topic now from young Philip but their's basically far more wrong with football than us getting 15m+ for a 19 year old kid the majority of football fans, Rovers included hadn't even heard of a couple of years ago.

Im guessing all of the 1st team players will be after higher wages now(samba inparticular if hes doesnt leave) having heard how much they where prepared to offer jones.

Hoilet needs to sign a new contract asap but having hearing they where prepared to offer a 19 year old defender(no matter how good) 65k, how much do you think hell be requesting!

If we had a respected manager at the club like hughes players wouldnt be so eager to leave, gurenteed.

Sorry, but that's rubbish.

Samba has wanted out for awhile, when Sam was still here, and I guarantee neither Hughes or Big Sam himself could do a thing about United poaching Jones.

Having a respected manager got Bellamy here in the first place. He wouldn't have come for Kean.

Managers can, and do, make a difference to players movements.

But did it stop him leaving when a better offer came along?
