I would love to believe the rumors and think it went a little like this...

SAF: Yeh ive bid 16million for phil jones can i talk to him now?

KEAN: Yeh course.

SAF: Ok he has agreed terms and passed his medical thanks.

KEAN: His contract means he can talk to people for 16million doesn't mean we have to sell him for that we want 25mil, oh and were also sueing you for tapping him up Bye.

No, they cant ask for £25,000,000 they would be in breach of contract, the £16,000,000 triggers a release clause, end of, a legal argument would result in Man U winning hands down, however, tapping up, if proven could be a different matter as would a firm bid from another club, even then, if a contract states £16,000,000 my understanding is that he would be allowed to make the move. It doesnt matter who is right or wrong, thjat is my interpretation of contract law, maybe someone else could elaborate further.

Kevin Gallacher is absolutely right- we have sold Phil Jones far too cheaply.

I honestly think we're getting about the fee, perhaps even a bit more than he's worth.

I think I'm right in saying Rio Ferdinand and David Luiz are the only centre backs currently playing in the Premier League who cost more money.

It's a lot of money for a defender. To justify the fee he'll have to become a world class centre back. He undoubtedly has the potential, but he's nowhere near yet (he's not even our best defender), and it's by no means a certainty he'll reach that level. Many a young player as failed to live up to early hype.

Personally I'm not displeased with the deal. I think we need £16 million for players in midfield/attack more than we need a good centre half - we have others in the squad. Defenders are the easiest players to replace, in the past all our big money exits have been game-changing attacking players, which is why we always took a while to recover.

16 Million pounds is to low but 20 mil is probably right. I don't blame the owners for digging their heels in over this. But Jones now says he wants to go. So let's try to get the best money we can for the players to improve our squad, and push on this season.

Yep, and I'd be furious if a club illegally approached a player I was paying millions of pounds a year to. Everyone seems quicker to criticise our own club than other peoples at the moment. If there is no clause obliging us to sell at a certain price, then bleed them dry.

This is no different to the Gareth Barry to Liverpool scenario a couple of years ago. Villa let Barry sort out terms/ medical whilst they negotiated a price, but Liverpool wouldn't meet Villa's demands. The player returned.

This situation is far simpler than people are trying to paint it.

Can I suggest you try reading AND comprehending my posts.

I have not criticised the club. I agree tapping up would be completely wrong but as far as I am aware there has been no tapping up.

For the third time, especially for your benefit S15, if we are trying to be "clever" about this transfer it could backfire on us spectacularly - if this did happen it would be very poor management. It hasn't happened yet but could do so if the scenario people are suggesting is correct. As I understand things the suggestion is this:

1. Utd, player and agent believe the release clause or fee to be £16m

2. Rovers have a cleverly worded contract which the club believe means Jones can talk to anyone ready to offer £16m but does not guarantee a sale.

3. Everything goes through and Rovers turn round and say that's just permission to talk, the price is £25m

I don't know what has happened any more than the next fan but if my employer treated me in this fashion I would leave. A footballer can't do that, what he can do is be so mightly p!ssed off with the club, if he stays, that putting him on the pitch could be a liability.

It may be deemed very clever by some, great business even but if it goes wrong we could have one very, very p!ssed off footballer on our hands.

That is all I'm saying

Just to add a footnote. I shall continue to support the club. I shall continue to distrust Venky's / Raos until they prove their worth. I shall continue NOT to criticise them as has been my standpoint since January. I think Steve Kean is a very poor manager, I have never criticised him and do not intend to do so now. The reason is simple - I can't be bothered.

I will also continue to post my opinions which are actually considered as opposed to much of what is said by some

The one thing that says to me this is not a done deal is it is not reported on SSN yet and after passing a medical it is usually announced straight away. So until a trusted source it says he has signed I have to doubt the deal has gone through. Also a couple of instances that don't ring true coincidentally he went for a medical when S.Kean had flown out to India when the medical was being done who gave him permission to have a medical surely only the manager can sanction that?.The fact he was out of the country says to me something is wrong about how he was allowed to go for the medical also depends how the contract was worded. If it states minimum release clause that would mean the least then he would then go for a hell of a lot more it really depends on the wording & most importantly how it is interpreted. I salute Venkys for kicking up a stink. Also what is most important in this is who is his agent if I suspect it is his father how do we know his father has not gone to SAF offering his client out there's so many things about this transfer that does not ring true inc. the valuation which makes me think this is not done yet.

Absolutely. Just try not to get so touchy when somebody disagrees. I've played Devil's Advocate; I find it very hard to believe that a player/agent/lawyer wouldn't be fully aware of the wording and consequent meaning of a written clause. It sounds most likely that we are unhappy at the way Man Utd have approached Phil Jones.

I have no idea what the hold up is, but it's more more satisfying than in the past where the board would drive players such as Duff, Bentley, Santa Cruz and Bellamy to their new clubs.

Roberto martinez, jones should take a leaf out of his book

Martinez is an average manager who belongs at a club like wigan, He'll probably finsih 16th or 17th again next season.

It's not the same.

Jones has the chance to play at possibly in Champions League finals and win titles and titles. you don't turn this chance down (unless your Matt Jansen)

I really don't care he is gone, 16 million is decent money, it was always on the cards, maybe one day he might be worth more like Terry or maybe he'll end up like Woodgate. we can re-invest, maybe we have a sell on clause.

Its not a big blow like losing Duff or Shearer or Bellamy.

It was posted on this thread earlier Phil Jones had fallen out with or been humiliated by Steve Kean. I'm not able to say how I know but I believe this to be incorrect. My understanding from a very good source, outside of the club, is Phil was very happy with Allardyce for giving him his first chance and got on well with Steve Kean.

I wonder if jerome Anderson was still smarting at the 'couldn't pick his own nose' comment from ferguson. What better way to get your own back then take him to the cleaners!!

is Jerome Anderson negotiate on rovers behalf or Paul Hunt?

It was said by JAL so I don't think you need to worry that many people believed it

It was a ridiculous thing to say. To be fair, I think BPF was also indicating Jones didn't like Kean which I didn't believe either.

Kelbo, unless you have specific details about the wording of the contract you can't state that.

The clause may not be a release clause, it may have been worded differently.

I hear what you are saying Ricky but if Rovers give a player permission to speak to a club who make an offer of at least £16,000,000 I think, irrespective of what may or may not be in the contract, it implies that the club have agreed to sell the player form that amount of money, thats why both parties agreed it to form part of the agreement, it would be foolish of the club to do anything otherwise or Rovers would lose so much credibility, it would take weeks to sign players as their legal people went through the contract with a fine tooth comb.

I am lead to believe, they were a few years ago, Footballers contracts were common throughout the Premier League, were endorsed by the league and whilst there will be provisions (such as a release figure) I dont think there would be allowances for maany alterations to the contract.

I think Paul has hit the nail on the head, we would get a player playing for us who doesnt want to be here and totally pigged off with Rovers as a club, as stated previously, we would lose all credibility and this would hamper prospective transfer targets.
