If the likes of Roger Johnson are going to cost the £14m Birmingham are reported to want can someone explain how we are going to replace Jones with a player of similar quality without spending more than the £16m we allegedly received for him ?

Stuck are you? Well blow me.

Stuck?

I have said about a hundred times why it's a fair price. Based on all previous transfers that have ever happened.

I don't care that Venky's said he was worth 25m, they were trying to get extra cash.

You happen to think he is worth more. Good for you.

What makes you say that?

Chris Smalling played 34 times for the Red Scum last season(21 in the league). Jones played in 30 games (28 in the league). I know Jones was injured for a chunk but what 19 year old would be disapointed with playing 30 odd times a season for the biggest most successful club in the country?

LOL

Smalling started 11 games and had splinters in his bum 17 times. Jones will be just the same instead of 40+ starts and development at Ewood.

Young players these days take the cash before regular football

We have lost a decent player with as yet unfulfilled potential. It will be with mixed feelings when he is playing against us and when he pulls on an England shirt. I honestly believe that he should have stayed at Rovers for at least another year. Maybe two, get 100 appearances under his belt and then move to a championsleague club as an established England international. That would have been major money all round especially for jones' bank balance. If he didn't push on then he would have been a very solid centerhalf for us. I think he has been misadvised.

He could have learned his trade and made mistakes with us, Not with them. The press will slaughter him.

or he could get injured first game of the season and his chance is gone. The big clubs don't wait around either you join when they ask or they never ask again.

Get somebody who isn't Roger Johnson perhaps?

You seem to forget some of the signings we've made in the past. Just because we have a little money now doesn't mean we are going to turn into Sunderland.

Jones was reportedly offered more money than United offered to stay at Ewood but opted for United because of the lure of the wretched Champions League.

I will still feel sick to my toes when I see Phil Jones in a Manc shirt.

Absolutely gutted that he has left so early in his career.

I think most of us feel the same, Philip. It particularly grates on me as he is practically a neighbour. Very mixed feelings at the moment, but as far as Rovers are concerned, I don't know what else they could do - except fully challenge the tapping up issue.

If Barcelona don't sign Fabregas this season then that is fairly strong message to other players. You either throw your toys out of the pram and force a move when we want you or you aren't going to ever play for us.

You would play for Manchester United if you were a professional footballer and good enough. It's easy to say you wouldn't but deep down, as a professional, you would.

The likes of Den, Jim myself were brought up in different times. Times when the Champions league wasn't even dreamt of, some of us might remember the days when gate money was split evenly, days when players earned a maximum wage whoever they played for. Days when MU were just another team and one of possibly 6 or 8 that could win the 1st Div every season. They had a massively fortunate break with Munich, followed by a marvelous player who looked like a pop star, terrifically biased Manchester based press and latterly a damned good manager when the CL was formed. I sometimes wonder how they would have gone on if Michael Knighton had taken them over in 89?

Point being back then they did not provide the lure that they do now.

Simple fact is .... and no one with any gumption can disagree with this is that if Man Utd decided to put him back on the market tomorrow they would ask and get more than 16.5 million. So no matter what mealy mouthed garbage people write he was nicked off us.

Just as an aside would anybody have access to any insurance value MU might put on him?

What a strange statement to make. Of course his value has gone up, he is playing for Manchester United. That is what happens. Derbyshire's value went up after he signed for Rovers upon the first day of signing did it not? Great Harwood (I think it was) still got a very good price for him though.

He hasn't kicked a ball for em yet! He is no better a player than he was a fortnight ago! Yet you say his value has gone up and that I have made a strange statement. Your's defies all logic braddock.

Nope, but he is now England under 21 captain and he has United on his CV. If he was to be sold tomorrow his value would have gone up. I'm not saying he's a better player, or that his value should go up. I'm saying it will have done, provided he isn't sold as being a United failure, which I'm guessing this hypothetical situation entails.

The way Jones played in the u21 tournament is no better than when he played for us- how many articles or reports can you find? When he signed for United suddenly there are dozens of articles about how good Jones is, United are lucky to find him etc etc. United effect means the likes of Wes Brown are worth millions even though he is average, 32 and with one year left of his deal!

Bizarre.

16.5 million is the set fee, United end up paying nearly double and are 'pissing' their sides, have I got that part right? Liverpool bidding 22 million was a wind up and they knew that PJ would not have gone there.

Finally the owners are planning on spending more than what we have got for PJ, so they can take any cut they like as long as we get to invest back in the team.

I love this hypothetical figure of 25 million that you have plucked from the air- do you know the breakdown of Liverpools bid of 22 million, how much was up front? Did you even rate PJ JAL based on Topmans quote you didn't and now he is valued at world record fees...interesting lol

Imy9 you and Topman just believe whatever you want to believe.

and please no replies for the good of this messageboard dear chap.

I don't think that's true. Fabregas was at the top of his game when Barcelona came in for him, but he's had a much poorer season this time around (by his standards), so their interest has obviously waned. They've come out and said that they won't fork out massive wads of cash for him now, but they still might try and sign him. Truth is, for the sort of money Wenger will no doubt be demanding, Barca probably have better alternatives to look at for cheaper.

I think Fabregas will send a stronger message to the players in saying that money and club status isn't everything. I sense that he's determined to win something with Arsenal and bring them the success they have been waiting so long for. It's something you'd feel more proud about as a player than joining a team of superstars that have already won everything and then done it again just for the fun of it.

feels like groundhog day with Bill Murray.

1. Rovers player who was previously no good becomes local hero

2. Before reaching superstar status at Rovers signs a big deal with another club

3. Has terrible year with new club and warms the bench for a year

4. Is purchased by a team of equal or lesser quality than Rovers for a fraction of the original purchase price

Quite true but it does seem that with the players that shower of skum have on the books that they could prop up a one legged sloth.
