You can say that, I know I did! :P

They looked stronger than ever tonight and I can see them winning the title comfortably, with Jones playing alot.

Agree. However I thought the question he was asked after the game about how playing for United compared with playing for Rovers was unfair and loaded and I hope he doesn't get slated for it from Rovers fans...

The miniscule sums for which we sell our best players is utterly ridiculous. Everyone in charge of finances needs to get the boot immediately.

Duff was what, 15-20 million? Abramovich was basically begging people to take his money, throwing silly money at useless players. We give him the world's best left-sided winger at the time, and get peanuts.

Brad Friedel. 3 Million? "Oh, he's old, so that's a good price". We sold the best goalkeeper in the Premiership, who is still top-quality amazing even today, for 3 Million. 3.

Jones? 16 million, good price for a 19 year old some would say. Except that we just handed United's best defender for the next two decades for pocket change (United/Chelsea range money).

It's depressing really. We always sell our best players. That's bad enough. But we can't even get the best damn deal out of it. What is going on here.

This Thread makes me sick. Enjoyed watching scum?????? I had to turn of the tv when the pundits were praising pj. Too painful. Hope the ewood faithfuls boo him when he comes back to Ewood.

Kom igjen a, som en fotballelsker liker du da vel å se god fotball spilles? ;)

Yes, absolutely Mr E. "Just a 19 year old centre half" - indeed.

£16m for England's next centre half and captain, who has another 15 years at the top table ahead of him, is a gift. United will be so happy knowing how they could get a young English player of such quality, just by knocking on his front door. Rovers had no say in it.

Sweet and sour for me watching him. Sweet because he's such a good player. Sour because we couldn't keep him for more than one season.

Not a happy bunny at the moment.

Unless he gets plagued by injuries he is going to end up being one of the top two or three defenders in the world, the potential he has is massive. Central defenders usually don't peak until their late 20's early 30's, that's 10 YEARS away in his case, so there is plenty of time for Phil to develop. Fergie said the other day in an interview that they had plenty of defensive options going into this season but Phil is a 'must have' player and when a player of his quality comes along you have to try and get him.

Watching him tonight generated mixed feelings for me, I felt proud in a way that some this good came through our system and the fact we played a huge and key part in his development. I also felt rather sad that we couldn't keep a player of his quality at the club and that on the evidence so far we are going to badly miss him this season.

My Norwegian is not what it once was...but...

"Come on Son, footballers like me and you are god like football players" ?

Lol, close but no sigar, my friend!

I would translate it as: "Common, as a football-lover you must enjoy watching good football being played" :tu:

A bit silly writing in norwegian on here, but it was just a small comment from one norwegian to another :xmas:

He did OK. Looked fairly composed, but for all of Spurs nice passing in midfield they never really tested United's back four.

Phil Jones is a good central defender and he has the potential to become one of the best central defenders in the league. Having said that, I do think that many Rovers fans overrate his current ability. 16.5 million may end up looking a good price, but it will never look a bargain. Defenders simply don't go for THAT much money and that is a very high price for a central defender, especially one unproven at Champions League or International level (and quite frankly not even that proven at the Premier League level).

I don't know why so many feel that he is a shoe-in to be the next England captain, or for that matter to even start for the England team. On the basis of this season he is going to face some very stiff competition from Smalling (who has looked very good at right back, but is clearly a centreback) at both club and international level.

He may end up becoming one of the best defenders in the league, may even in the world, but there's also a very good chance that he simply ends up being a good central defender playing for a good team. Time will tell, but we certainly can't complain about the fee that we got.

As for being proud or sickened by seeing him turn out for United? I can't understand either emotion. He didn't play for this club for long enough to truly feel attached to him and, at the same time, he isn't such an amazing player that the club is lost without him.

Since our return to the premier league I have only been 'hurt' by the loss of two players: Duff and Bellamy. They were game changers. Players capable of something out of nothing and of doing something that was so wonderful that it made watching the match worthwhile (Bentley nearly got there, the likes of Tugay and Friedel were equally important, but left in different circumstances and at different stages of their career). They were irreplaceable. Jones isn't.

I'm sure that this will be controversial, but I really don't think that there is a massive difference between having the best central defender in the premier league and the 30th best. Jones was good, but if we have Nelsen and Samba fit then our team is no worse off. When you lose an attacking player (as we did with Bellamy, Bentley or Duff) they are far more difficult to replace.

To be honest I'd rather United won the league than City so it makes them more tolerable.

I don't like nor will ever like United but I don't have the energy nor reason to hate them (Vinjay are you reading?), it seems to me most of our fans with a real deep hatred of them started supporting us in the 90's when we had a rivalry with them. Nowadays we are nothing to them so it seems pathetic for us to carry it on, we hated them because they were the best and thats where we wanted to be and they were stopping us for a while, nothing more deep rooted.

What's most disappointing about seeing him do well there is just how easy it is for the big boys, Fergie will get praise but it's easy enough to spot the best young players and throw money at them, now anyone with potential will be gone within a season or two. I'd like to see some sort of rule wherein a player cannot transfer within 3 years or so of becoming pro through the youth setup. Wouldn't work in practice though.

Completely agree with this - aside from the rivalry years ('93 to '95), I've never disliked United and would always prefer watching them play than a Chelsea or an Arsenal.

Eddie I've said before that what you know about football could be written on a postage stamp..... the above post confirms it. 'never really tested' If you had bothered making a trip to Ewood park for his home debut you would have seen him destroy Drogba and Anelka, within a week or two he had Rooney and Berbatov in his arse pocket. Phil Jones is an absolutely fantastic talent and a massive on field influence in either the centre of defence or deep midfield. Football talk the way it is I would not be suprised to hear comparisons with Duncan Edwards before long either! Given an even break with injuries etc he will dominate for MU and England for the next decade and that 16m will turn out to be a bigger crime than the Great Train Robbery.

It's just so bitter sweet watching him play for those scumbags.

It just highlights how unfair the whole Premiership is. We as a club is bigger than one player, but I got filled with proud seein one of our "own" making strong tackles, great runs and giving his all.

The commentator for the channel i was watching the match on last might sums up the media Man Utd love in.

"The youngsters on show such as Chris Smalling and Phil Jones really are a credit to Uniteds excellent youth system"

Tell me you're joking?

Reading he Times report, banging on about 'Fergie's new breed of youngsters' and comparing them to Giggs et al- eh? Phil Jones was BOUGHT for £16.5 million, Smalling £8million!

On 5 live commentary last night, Lawrenson claimed Jones had come ‘bursting through the United academy’

Also noticed Jones had shed a few pounds in the sky interview later in the evening.

Really? So would you care to tell me how many central defenders have been sold for more than that? How many central defenders under the age of 20? Central defenders with fewer than 40 first team appearances? With no international experience? With no European experience?

You run through all of that and compare it to other transfers and you'll find that it is a massive transfer fee.

Either that or stay uninformed. You stick to talking about how I don't know about local life in Blackburn, but leave the world football talk to those who actually pay attention to what goes on.

Also noticed Jones had shed a few pounds in the sky interview later in the evening.

He certainly has, looks in much better shape.
