Paddy Crerand may have been a fine player but he's a bloody awful pundit. We got a decent price for a teenager in the circumstances, lets move on.

I doubt this "life long Rovers fan" gives us a second thought.

He said "in the open market" he would have been worth double the price we got for him. He's probably right.

I think you missed the point.

Maybe I did, I wont be the first to miss one of his "points". By general consensus the owners played a blinder over the Jones transfer. I think it was Nicko who said that Venkys regarded Utd's behaviour re the clause as tantamount to "industrial espionage" and wouldn't have it. They took Utd on and squeezed more cash out of them which apparently infuriated The Rags.

That is probably prompted Paddy Crerand's comment, he is THE most one eyed, biased pundit anywhere.

This all comes down to the clause that was inserted.

If I remember correctly, then an £8m clause was put in his contract last summer. Then in January a £16m clause was put in.

Now, if Jones had already decided before January that he wanted to go, then he would've had us over a barrel to an extent. If he didn't like the deal, he didn't have to sign, and it was still a £8m clause. On that basis, he would have been in a very strong position for asking for a clause in an improved deal.

What did the clause give Man Utd permission to do though? Because we let it go through all the way to Jones agreeing the deal and having a medical before we started asking for more money. That's not a strong bargaining position. Whether a higher amount could have been put in the transfer clause, and what bidders meeting the clause could do are two things we might never find out.

Totally agree - I don't understand why the original 8m clause was put in as Jones was still in Rovers youth team at that time and would not really had much barganing power. THere must have been CL clubs sniffing around or something? Just doesn't quite add up to be honest,.

Still missing the point. If he didn't have a clause in his contract and Chelsea, Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool and Spurs had been bidding for him, which they would have done since they all wanted him, he would have brought more than £16m.

Crerand is a plank, you're right, but it's difficult to say Jones wouldn't have brought more than £16m in those circumstances. How much would he be worth now on the open market - just a few weeks later?

Wasn't the clause inserted during protracted contract negotiations? Getting him to sign amidst uncertainty about whether or not he'd stay with a guarantee of £16m wasn't bad business considering that Jones had not long turned 19 and had only a handful of games under his belt.

Easy for the likes of Crerand to have a spiteful dig with the benefit of hindsight.

Doesn't the clause just mean that once it's reached then the player is free to talk to the club interested?

We why can't you squeeze more out of them? Or maybe it was the player?

And there is the rub!

Whatever the if's and but's, we got turned over on that one, big style.

Why do people conveniently ignore that Jones ALREADY had a clause for £8m.

It was the original contract negotiations which set the precedent here.

So we either risked losing him for £8m or resigned him under an improved release clause.

Surely if this clause was real it would've been triggered by the 8mill bid from Arsenal in Janurary.

Ferguson said Man Utd attempted to sign him last January so not sure if there def was a clause previously or they just offered a low fee initially?

He plays for scumchester now, and he and that gold digging slag can eff off. Get over it and move on. We just have to make sure we don't screw it up with the next Jonesesque talent.

If we were privy to the details of Hoilett's new contract it might well reveal that we already have. He and his Dad had us over a barrell. If he can keep the weight off the big clubs will be busting a gut to sign him after this season.

I'm sorry but I dont get that. The £16m clause existed, one of the world's biggest clubs triggered it and the player wanted away. Utd didn't want to pay more than the £16m but were made to which they were far from happy about.

How did we get turned over?

I'm with Billy on this anyway. Once the "lifelong Rovers fan" slung his hook with his mouthy WAG I lost all interest in him.

Don't get all this mouthy WAG stuff.

What's she done?

To be fair to her she was sticking up for Jones after he took a lot of flack on Twitter. In doing that she went too far and came across as a chavvy wannabe.

Why would people follow her on twitter anyway?

She's a girlfriend of one of our ex players. What's that got to do with Rovers?

All sounds a bit stalkerish

I don't think anybody was stalking her. I think she reacted to some stuff that was tweeted to her boyfriend and made a bit of an @rse of herself.

It was all pretty much in the public domain in the aftermath of Jones's move.

I understand that, but surely you have to follow someone to see what they're tweeting?

That's what I don't understand? Why follow a footballers girlfriend?

£20 mill is still less than his market worth in my view. What isn't clear is why we started to negotiate with United once the player had his medical, very late in the day to do that. Was that because of the small print of the clause or was there a slip-up?

So yes, I still think we got turned over, even if United didn't have it all their own way.

But still, what do I know of these things, I'd better get back to the cyber-gym. :D

Playing like a £50m player, let alone £16m :(

centre half, midfield and now right back. Jones is one hell of a player as most of us knew anyway. Well on the way to being an OT legend. If he stays fit they'll be comparing him to Duncan Edwards before much longer. I wonder what value MU would put on him now? <_<

Whichever way one views this we were bloody done! Swept aside by the playground bully.
