centre half, midfield and now right back. Jones is one hell of a player as most of us knew anyway. Well on the way to being an OT legend. If he stays fit they'll be comparing him to Duncan Edwards before much longer. I wonder what value MU would put on him now? <_<

Whichever way one views this we were bloody done! Swept aside by the playground bully.

There has been a few ex united players (Crerand and Charlton being two) saying that he reminds them a bit of Duncan Edwards. Far before my time so I can't say if that is a decent comparison or not.

He's looking like a worldie but then most Rovers fans already knew that.

Welcome to modern football - and half of the reason my interest in it wanes year on year.

Sold a talent like jones to Utd, 'the richest club in the world' and all payed for in (convenient for Utd!) installments.

Pure F##king Genius that one. <_<

Respected broadsheet journalist Henry Winter in last week's 'Sunday Supplement' - "Utd paid over the odds for Jones but he is a good signing"

Why are we still going on about a Man Utd player? Cant we put this to bed now?

Not until we start keeping a few clean sheets.

Look, we've just lost a former-potential-future-hero. You have just got through the grief curve a lot quicker than others.

I'm not convinced he's even left us. It's just a loan deal, right...?

remember he was on a 5 year contract with a 16.5 million clause.

He could have gone in 2014 and still we'd get 16.5 plus a few add ons.

I find it hard to believe that Venkys giving him a new contract in Feb 2011 knowing Arsenal, Man U and Chelsea were interested, allowed a caused without the intention of selling.

It must have been planned to let him go. No clause for Samba.

My Man Utd mate text me this message earlier:

Dear Blackburn Rovers,

Just writing to thank you for the cb,rb,dm,cm and possibly cf u sold us in phil jones. All for a POULTERY £18 mill.

Urs truly,

Man Utd.

Pains me to see him play for United.

I'd sooner have kept him for 2 years and then let him go for £16.5 mil.

However, that completely disregards the fact that after another 12 months we could have offered him a fantastic new deal and removed (or increased) the offending clause.

All that said:

The point is moo.

Doesn't make sense. If they were looking to cash in on Jones, they wouldn't include a release clause. They'd hold out for as much as they could get.

Jones must have already had one, which is why the club had to accommodate that when they offered him a new deal.

They also wouldn't have tried to break the wage bill to keep him.

yeah i was wondering that, when was the clause put in place.

He owes his agent a big kiss on the lips if it was before Venkys with he was 17/18.

Can't see how it got included, he must have started off on a pretty low wage.

TBH I'm not interested in Jones one little bit, He don't play for us anymore so I have no interest if he plays good/bad, gets injured, becomes the worlds best player.

My only interest is Blackburn Rovers football club and the players we have, I think its time folk moved on, He was a good player with potential, but was no Alan Shearer, and that is the only player thats ever left that has had me completely gutted,

We've got to move on, but paid over the odds? No chance.

He wanted to leave. Regardless of contracts or valuations, he wanted to play for a better football club. We couldn't offer him what Man Utd offered and he made the right decision by the looks of things. Its a scenario where no one is really to blame unless you blame the player himself for wanting to leave in the first place. As it stands, £20m is a fair price, in two or three years he may be worth double that, but we were never going to find out.

He was immense for ManU today.. never knew he could play right back and never knew he had that much skill on the ball.. if he keeps this up he will be a 40m player by Christmas.

Still suprised a few people thought Venkys did great in this transfer.. yes they got an extra few mil over the release clause but they put the damn release clause in there in the first place, with the likes of ManU/Chelsea/Liverpool etc already interested and the price of English youth players that was def an epic fail from the chicken farmers.

If we continue to struggle, and have managers like DDSK in charge, then I'm not surprised to see players leave. We need to start winning games, getting a better manager, and getting the respect back again. Phil did, what every young player would like to do, and that's playing for a top club, and winning trophys.

Henry Winter is obviously attempting to contradict himself in the shortest way possible. He must have had a wine bar bet on with a fellow journo to do so in print. I trust he won.

No disrespect intended to imy.. if fact he deserves lots of respect for sticking with us cos I'd imagine that if Brum is the same as Blackburn the majority of his mates will support Manchester United.

I think we can assume that BRFC had little to do with it. I's probable that Jones's agent would have insisted on a release clause. He probably set the limit too.
