den Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 centre half, midfield and now right back. Jones is one hell of a player as most of us knew anyway. Not all though. Apparently he was to some - OK, or - a long way off being a Premier League player, or Man Utd taking a gamble.

Silencio Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Kean was saying we now have a stronger squad than last season and while Dann is a good player he will never be able to compete with Jones. How can it have surprised people how good he has been for Utd when he was so good from day one with us? I think he is already the best defender in the league but I would put him in midfield with Wilshere for England...
thenodrog Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 TBH I'm not interested in Jones one little bit, He don't play for us anymore so I have no interest if he plays good/bad, gets injured, becomes the worlds best player. My only interest is Blackburn Rovers football club and the players we have, I think its time folk moved on, He was a good player with potential, but was no Alan Shearer, and that is the only player thats ever left that has had me completely gutted, My main grievance is that the rules make it possible for an 18 year old to be snaffled on the cheap. We have been brushed aside with absolute contempt by the playground bully and the authorities are happy to stand and watch for fear they might smoehow upset that bully. I know that in a past life we signed Shearer when he was 19 or 20 and it might go against employment laws but it would make more sense for youth team players to remain with their original club until they are 23 or similar. Early big club stardom suits some like Shearer but it destroys just as many. Look at Gascoigne for an example of that, Maradona's another famous example, Mutu too and even George Best burned up and might have been better being discovered by a small club and staying out of the limelight until he was 23.

Under a proper manager and inspite of 2nd Div strikers the two Jones's would have made us a mid-top half team instead of a relegation threatened outfit. John Terry is reported as saying that Jones was the talk of the Chelsea dressing room after his Ewood debut.
jim mk2 Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Watching MotD last night Jones already looks a colossus for them; if he continues to develop and improve over the next 5 years the £16m fee will look very silly indeed. Interesting to see Ferguson biting his lip over the Kevin Davies tackle "it's what we expected" (ie, from Kevin Davies) but in all honestly it was not a bad foul and Ferguson of course would have defended his player if he had made a similar challenge. Cahill had a nightmare I thought - no wonder Arsenal refused to pay Bolton's asking price.
Stuart Posted September 11, 2011 Author Posted September 11, 2011 Like a cow's opinion? That's right! It's moo. Che ble blah. Me la pee! Oublah! Poo...

And Cahill had no help from Knight or any midfielder, Bolton were awful.
thenodrog Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I remember a few of those posts... Prob the same footballing luminaries who thought Grabbi and Stead should have been given more of a chance, and didn't rate Tim Sherwood. Where tf do they keep appearing from?
Amo Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 A lot of people getting carried with Utd's latest star. 1. He only got picked for England 'cos he plays for United. Capello was oblivious to him at Rovers. 2. Let's see how he fares in the CL knock-out stages, not a training session against a beleaguered Bolton. We all know he's a talented player but there's a common tendency to overhype the crap out of English players before they've even achieved anything.

imy9 Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 some folk even reckoned he wouldn't get into our team when everyone was fit. JJ and Nzonzi in central midfield. Nelsen and Samba in CB, is it inconceivable that he would be left out? Jones is a quality player but in all honesty MGP would look like a class player in that United side. £20 million including add ons, plus 20% sell on fee is a fair figure for both sides for a 19 year old defender, lets see how often he plays when Vidic and Rio are fully fit.
Amo Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Keep telling yourself that Toppers. It's not sour grapes, it vinegar... I couldn't really give a toss about Jones. Just don't get the manic depressives convincing themselves we've sold the next Bobby Moore.
thenodrog Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Reading the match reports today some people are going to appear incredibly foolish before too long.
Stuart Posted September 11, 2011 Author Posted September 11, 2011 I couldn't really give a toss about Jones. Just don't get the manic depressives convincing themselves we've sold the next Bobby Moore. There's nothing manic depressive about it. I agree we should wait 12 months before deciding but I reckon we might have sold the next... Bobby Moore.
RibbleValleyRover Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 JJ and Nzonzi in central midfield. Nelsen and Samba in CB, is it inconceivable that he would be left out? The way Samba and Jones played together Nelsen wouldn't have got back into the side unless Jones was injured or suspended. Nelsen admitted himself in an interview with the LT that he accepted he would likely be a bit part player from now on. Jones is a quality player but in all honesty MGP would look like a class player in that United side. £20 million including add ons, plus 20% sell on fee is a fair figure for both sides for a 19 year old defender, lets see how often he plays when Vidic and Rio are fully fit. MGP is a rubbish player and that would be obvious in United's side. On Jones reading Fergie's comments and praise it's going to be difficult for Jones to be dropped. Rio came back from injury and Fergie just had to keep Jones in the side so he played right back. Jones is already good enough to stay in that United side. On the price we were hamstrung with the clause, in a years time i'm confident he's going to be worth twice what United paid for him.
thenodrog Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Phil Jones on the bench for United's first league match. Hope he gets splinters in his bum for the rest of the season. This gets better. Vidic limps off and is replaced by ..... Jonny Evans. Unless he is injured Jones is at least No 4 in the starting line-up pecking order and possibly No 5 if Smalling is in front of him. Ever wish you hadn't posted something? I bet Jones is the second name on the team sheet right now after Rooney. BUT.. If he dares get a bit big headed the old RFW will soon make him the last.

Where tf do they keep appearing from? A lot of people getting carried with Utd's latest star. 1. He only got picked for England 'cos he plays for United. We all know he's a talented player but there's a common tendency to overhype the crap out of English players before they've even achieved anything. What has your first point got to do with how good he is? There is a tendency to over hype English players but Jones has stood out as being special from day one and looks like he has played at Utd for 10 years. He's hard as nails, fast, can play the ball quickly in two touches, fearless and he can dribble. Yes, it is because he would get in ahead of Nelsen every time and is better than Nzonzi (who I rate). I expect Vidic and Ferdinand will be first choice this season but Jones will get plenty of playing time and will then replace Vidic (who often looks half the player without Ferdinand). That clause should never have gone in the contract. If we had kept him for another year we would have been able to get more money and would be more likely to stay up despite having Kean in charge.
thenodrog Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I couldn't really give a toss about Jones. Just don't get the manic depressives convincing themselves we've sold the next Bobby Moore. Bobby Moore? Duncan Edwards was my comparison long ago and I see no reason to change my opinion. signed Depressed of Blackburn
T.J.Newton Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Phil Jones looks like he could be going on to become one of the best English defenders of the last 20 years ability wise(he really does seem to have it all which is very rare), as long has he keeps learning, avoids serious injuries and doesn't let the money etc.. go to his head which is what has been the downfall of most of the best English players in recent years. I wasn't happy he left so soon but when you consider the way the club/team has been run/managed over the last 12 months you cant really blame him for wanting out, maybe he should of handled himself better regarding the way he engineered the move away, but hes young and naive.
SIMON GARNERS 194 Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 At the end of the day what could 'owd Rovers have offered a player like jones.....Ste Kean and a relegation battle? Good luck to the lad.
47er Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I couldn't really give a toss about Jones. Just don't get the manic depressives convincing themselves we've sold the next Bobby Moore. Jones is, at the age of 19, a wonderful player. The sky's the limit for him. I can't believe you can't see it.
Exiled_Rover Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Are we still talking about this? We've been put in our place - give the best teams your stand out players, keep quiet and make up the numbers. That's what every team bar a select few has to put up with in the top flight's current incarnation.

Where do you get the 20% sell-on figure from? I have never heard of that, nor does seem in the remotest part likely that United would agree to it when they need reason to do so whatsoever.
