[Archived] Phil Jones

Recommended Posts

Jones starting in central midfield today, away at Liverpool. That means he's played centre half, full back and central midfield. Oh and for England.

He's not that good though eh?

He looked out of his depth at RB for England, will not play RB for United if Smalling is fit and won't play CB either if Vidic and Rio are fit, not seen anything to change my mind about that of I'm honest. The big difference is that playing for United means that the media have hyped him up already, 20 million plus add ons was an excellent deal for both parties.

No, WE hyped him up when the media didn't give a feck. The guy is pure class.

He got an England call up without a game for United!!

He is good and will get better but at his age things could change quickly which is why I think both parties got a fair deal.

He has undoubted class but not pure class yet, too often forgets the basics of defending for me, seen him make 2-3 mistakes today alone

He's in the best place to polish his skills though

He is physically and technically first-class, but he's still inexperienced and makes the odd mistake. I don't know how much he should've been worth, but he's definitely going to be a top class player for years to come.

He is playing in midfield Tom.

So when he totally misses the ball when he's the front man on a corner or lazily chanses his man back that's ok?

Next England captain I have no doubt but he has work to do yet on the simple stuff

Exactly. He can do a job in midfield but his best position is CB, Rio, Vidic and Evans are ahead of him there so how much will he play?

Class but not pure class, that we'll see in a few years time.

He will be prefered to Ferdinand more and more often.

Don't know why I'm even posting about a Man United player!

Former England defender Danny Mills at Anfield on BBC Radio 5 live:"If Phil Jones is unable to continue in the second half it could do Manchester United massive favour. He's like a fish out of water in midfield, playing in an unfamiliar position, and it's thrown United off their entire game."

Question for anyone. If another top club came in for Jones now - and he wanted to leave, how much would United ask/get for him?

Off today's performance so far about £6.32

It's irellevent though a team like United can always demand a much higher price than a team like Rovers

Edit: Make that £5.32 now

Better question, if Jones was still playing for Blackburn how much would he be worth, answer a lot less because he plays for us.

Rovers can ask as much as anyone else Tom.

How's about £40m ish?

Not bad for someone you lads don't rate!

Not with a release clause we can't, and players are far more likely to demand a release clause at Rovers. As for £40m you're way off at his current standard IMO. I do rate him though never said otherwise.

Dunno whats up with him today he's comfortably the worst player on the pitch, twice now instead of tracking his man he has tried and failed to foul them and let them get away, second time leading to the goal

dont know what all the fuss about pique is to be honest, give me terry any day of the week, same as puyol, highly overrated, not saying spain arent a wondeful side because they are just them two arent as good as the rest of the team, pique still a class player just not as good as some make out, jones could be easily as good as him.

Pique is an outstanding defender.

Technically I have not seen a better defender, he could play upfront if he wanted. The complete defender IMO.

Jones and Pique are in different leagues.

Guys it's not about worth, it's about what a club is willing to pay for him. He was easily worth more than what we got for him when we sold him and if not for the (highly uncommon in the U.K.) release clause we could have rejected United's bid and let war commence. It would have been no different now as he's english and so his value increases massively, just ask Carroll. Yes a striker, but not even one full season in the prem and issues galore, but his 'little' club didn't put a bloody clause in and so could ask whatever they wanted for him. We could easily have matched that £30M back in the summer as it's not about worth, but the size of your cheque book and English clubs are willing and loaded.

Oh and Pique 40M, he's the Ronaldo of Defenders and if he was available I can think of many clubs with seriously deep pockets that would want him. So perhaps worth 40M, but he'd fetch far more as you also need to remember he qualifies as home grown here, so is as good as english in football. I reckon you'd see a Ronaldo esq fee for him easily, Man City, PSG, United et al would love to have him playing for them, but it's also elementary as he'll most likely never leave Barca.

Pique is 24 years old Den, at his peak and is worth £40 million, you are putting Jones in that league- he is nowhere near that- yet.

Pique, who's talking about Pique imy? If United had to sell Jones do you think Ferguson would look at your Pique valuation?

In case you didn't realise it, I asked how much he would go for if United had to sell him. You think Ferguson would let him go for the £16m + add ons that he paid for him?

Go think again.
