[Archived] Summer 2011 Transfer Window Part One

Too right. Levy is renowned for being an absolute ba$stard to negotiate transfers with. Squeezing out every penny he can to recoup the fee originally paid for the player.

Well said! We've all moaned about how much of a git Levy can be, I'm happy if we get that sort of expectation for clubs coming in for our players!

You know whats a huge coincidence?

Posters who are against the owners and have been screaming about everything they do (mercer, JAL, Jim, Philip, majiball etc) are all 100% sure this is the fault of the owners / manager.

Funny that

Who else could be at fault?

'...is it really worth it...?' Are you serious? Taking this as far as they can is more than worth it in this case. If it stops teams seeing us as an easy target and tapping up our players then, yes of course it is.

I agree, some people (and national newspapers) are again using it as a stick to beat venkys with but this sends out a signal to other teams that venkys will stand up to big teams if they think there is something wrong.

If we don't get any more money from Man u then fine but at least they tried.

For all the talk of marquee signings, top 4 finish etc... I get the impression from other Rovers fans that this incident is starting to win some fans over.

We don't need to hear all the talk about what they are going to do, actions speak louder than words and the fact they are fighting to get the best deal for Rovers is good to see.

Hopefully they will start spending some money on some decent players.

Sensible? £14m for a 28 year old who is now a championship player who wants top flight football?

I agree the price is high but he is very good. It is no bearing upon his game that they went down. Without him they would have gone down a lot sooner. Birmingham's problem was lack of goals for and losing Dann to injury.

If we could pinch them both for £15m then we have had a result. When you buy them individually the price will increase a lot but for the stability he gives it may be worth it.

How so?

Smailing went for 7m last summer. They certainly didn't open the budding at 16m.

Everyone thinks Jones is underpriced at 16M, no way would he have gone for that with all the big clubs wanting him.

Player, players friends, Agent, Agents friends, family

Not to mention the previous regime if we are blaming the club.

If there was a clause pre existing there's no way young 'Billy Big ###### Jones' would have signed a new contract without one, him and his agent have obviously been looking for a bigger team since he broke on the scene.

I'm just glad the owners managed to get the clause up to £16m.

If you think about it logically without any bias, the insertion of a clause is always going to be down to the player and agent really, why would the club put one in and I'm sure the club would have tried to set it as high as possible if they were forced to have one in?

Fact is people can't wait for something else to appear to bash the owners /manager with, I believe Majiball said the owners and manager should be hung, drawn and quartered over it, obviously I'm not taking that seriously but it's still hardly balanced is it?

But who else is to blame for the clause being set at £16m? That surely is the issue and a lack of judgement.

Rubbish, if it is confidential, it is confidential, footballers values (and moral values) go up and down, are contracts constantly changing, no. So you have a safe guard called confidentiality

But might have been a lengthy negotiation over the clause without which he wouldn't have signed the new contract and 16 million was the highest we could get - without the new contract the fee would have been lower

No according to Nicko, who claims that the club put the clause in, I guess to stop Jones going for a lot less than £16m.

Nicko - what sort of value do you think Rovers will put on Sambas head and are Arsenal likely to move for him shortly ? any interest from else where for the big guy ?, or any of our others players ? cheers

This goes back to what I was saying. This makes no sense.

There must have been a clause before.

At the moment they are basically saying pay up or he isn't going anywhere.

So if there was no clause before, if a low offer was received they would just say "on your bike".

I can't see past a clause being inserted by the trust. Arsene Wenger seems to think there was.

I think some folk just ignore what's actually being said Paul - and carry on regardless of what is actually happening.

Back in the real world... Clubs will always find out about release clauses in players' contracts. Now I think the club is right to protest about this and feel sore that Jones is leaving with such haste (but with Kean running the show who can blame him), but the clause must be there to protect the club in these circumstances, and it doesn't.

I will know more on that front later in the week. It won't go away in a hurry.

However there are some far-distant possible incomings on the horizon.

So I am setting the binoculars in that direction today for a pleasant change.

No PM's. No 11 o'clockers. Just a bit of long-range sniffing going on.

The lpool 22m bid (mischievous? determined?) must have put the cat amongst the pigeons. Now although Jones wants to sign for MU could it be that we can refuse to even speak to them and insist that we only deal with Lpool (Jack Walker / Shearer / Man Utd). Either Jones would then sign for Lpool, or MU would have to up their offer or he'd stay here .

btw RFW... 'Jerome Anderson pick a player? Jerome Anderson could nae pick his own nose'. Who said "Revenge is a dish best served cold"?

Nice one. Maybe we can discuss something other than the Jones transfer. Hopefully some decent names in the mix.

According to Nicko, the club put the clause in. If he is wrong then granted we have a slightly different argument.

Difference being he had only played a handful of games when Utd signed him and he was still pretty low profile.

Jones has made 30 odd appearances and has a serious knee injury and looks to be going for 20m.

Who got the better deal?

Fulham or us?

I'm not saying 16.5 million for a tenager isnt a load of dosh, course it is, However you have to look at the market. The 'big clubs' want young English talent and are paying premiums for it- Carroll, Henderson to name the last two big moves.

I knew years ago that Rovers had initiated release clauses in players contracts. Nicko is telling you the same, as are several other media sources. You obviously know nothing about this, and rather than accepting it and trying to work out how they work, you would rather keep on denying it because you see it as a slur against Venky's. So much for a balanced viewpoint.

It really isn't difficult to see how these clauses "can" benefit the player and the club. On the other hand, they can also work against both parties. My main problem with them, is that Rovers seem to give more of these clauses than other clubs.
