According to Nicko, the club put the clause in. If he is wrong then granted we have a slightly different argument.

The owners put the price clause in the contract.

In hindsight, it is a couple of mill low.

However when it was put in it would have seemed like a fair figure for an injured youngster.

So I would not be too critical either way.

The fantasy figures paid for Henderson and demanded for Sturridge mean that it may be less than it could have been.

Do not ever apply logic to football.

Rovers put a £17 million fee in Damien Duff's deal and laughed at the idea that someone would pay it. Then along comes Roman Abramovich.

So what happens if Jones had made a comeback, fell over and did his knee again...? The team goes down and you are stuck with a lot of players on massive wages.

£16 million would have been WAY too much for him then.

Back in the real world... Clubs will always find out about release clauses in players' contracts. Now I think the club is right to protest about this and feel sore that Jones is leaving with such haste (but with Kean running the show who can blame him), but the clause must be there to protect the club in these circumstances, and it doesn't.

The real world is he hasn't signed for manu yet!

If manu had followed procedure this situation would not have come about.

ie manu contact Rovers with an offer, Rovers know the clause detals and say either that he is not for sale if offer is to low or, if the offer triggers the clause you can talk to the player but you have to match our valuation 1st, they didn't do this and jumped in thinking they could steamroll a deal

The Venkies have thrown a spanner in the works and stood up to them,

Real world.

Jones has a serious knee injury and looks to be going for 20m.

Jones had had a serious knee injury from which he has recovered. He has passed the medical. United wouldn't spend 20p on a crocked player never mind £20m.

Try again.

You are 100% certain that there was no clause before and this clause was not requested by Phil Jones agent.

I refuse to believe it regardless.

Why not? I will just say I know for a FACT that this isn't the case.

It works for everyone else eh?

Hi

owenhargreaves_217052.jpg

Fair enough if it was solely down to the new owners to put the clause in it is a slight mistake as a tiny bit too low but I stil lthink it's a fair price, as an outsider you'd think Rovers were getting a good deal but we all have blue and white specs.

Touche Jim

Owen Hargreaves signed for Manchester United in 2007 from Bayern Munich and won the Premier League title and Champions League in his first season at Old Trafford.

In other words, he wasn't injured when he signed for them.

Good try, but not good enough.

David Vaughan on a free??

Not the massive signing we're all hoping for but low wages and wouldn't be a bad bench player.

Schalke Sign New MIdfielder

Possibly easier for us to pry J. Jones away now?

@SkyBet_Steve: We've suspended betting on Charlie Adam to join Liverpool following a run of bets on the midfielder's potential move to Anfield.

I know we never really had a chance against L'Pool but he could have been a good signing at the right price. Even if he is a nasty b@st@rd

JIM!

In the 2006-07 season, Hargreaves was unfortunate enough to break his leg which kept him out of most Bayern Munich’s campaign ^_^

He’s had problems that include thigh, calf, leg break, adductor problems and been out for around 2 years with his knee.

sicknote jim!

The £16 million price clause in Phil Jones's new contract was put in by the owners.

Fact.

If you are telling me there was a lower figure - £8 million allegedly - in his old contract that may well be the case.

I would like to know if that was the case. It would make me laugh out loud.

The lpool 22m bid (mischievous? determined?) must have put the cat amongst the pigeons. Now although Jones wants to sign for MU could it be that we can refuse to even speak to them and insist that we only deal with Lpool (Jack Walker / Shearer / Man Utd). Either Jones would then sign for Lpool, or MU would have to up their offer or he'd stay here .

btw RFW... 'Jerome Anderson pick a player? Jerome Anderson could nae pick his own nose'. Who said "Revenge is a dish best served cold"?

I agree with you on this. Both clubs have triggered the 'release clause'. So if Rovers receive an offer from L'pool of 22 mill - Rovers should be permitted to sell to L'pool. Unless Man U matched or bettered L'pools bid.

Can anybody clarify why this could not be the case. Especailly if L'pool have made a 22 mill bid.

He made 34 appearances plus 2 as sub that season in a double championship-winning team.

Please tell me what your point is.

Google the Christian Ziege to Liverpool transfer (from Middlesbrough) for info. Liverpool triggered the £5.5m release clause while two other clubs made £7.5m offers. Ultimately the player moved to Liverpool.
