[Archived] Summer 2011 Transfer Window Part One

Recommended Posts

I think there is some concern as to where it has come from, to be fair this is a legitimate concern.

It appears as though there is a hefty transfer budget available even before player sales...

We'll have to watch this space.

So Kean's much attacked comments about the transfer budget may actually turn out to be accurate?

Not too sure how this has happened but expect to see Mr Kean with a big smile on his face tomorrow.

I'm very surprised right now, but a little suspicious also.

I'm sure Philipl will be able to fill you in.

I think I'll wait for Alan Nixon (somebody with a track record of getting things right about Rovers).

Thanks anyway.

Nicko i appreciate it's early days but do you think its a posibility that a top club will buy jones and loan him back to us for the season?

Wouldn't want him in these circumstances personally. Every game he played well in would reinforce the hurt.

I'd expect at least £24-26m for Jones and Samba if they both move on. Would definitely prefer to sell Samba over Jones for age reasons, but since it seems Jones will have his buyout met we should be trying to persuade Samba to stay. If not, then spending smart could rebuild half our first team - or more, if Venkys are still willing to put some cash in.

It's a real shame to lose Jones, but players like him don't stick around at clubs like ours. And chances at spending like this haven't come around at Rovers in a decade.

What sort of ball park figure is hefty?

Say no more, say no more - soon we'll be paying Man City prices for players :P

nicko, BPF, anyone. Do you think Jones is in the same boat as Samba - if we make some decent signings he might stay? Would be wise to make our moves early considering...

Thinking about replacements for either Centre Backs, wasnt there a whispers of an Italian CB being on the scene? Can't remember his name, began with a "B" I think?

Franco Baresi ? Best defender in the world in his pomp but he's 51 now.

If we sell Samba and Jones we need at least one good defender and one back up/young/semi good defender.

Givet, Hanley and Nelsen can take up any spaces.

If a club did loan us back Jones at least it would give us more time to find a new replacement.

We could loan him back. This would then mean we wouldn't be held to ransom by other clubs and could buy another centre back and stick Jones in the reserves.

the past two days have made it more obvious that Jones will leave. however, the lad would have left within a year anyway. I'd prefer him to move to either Arsenal or Man U rather than liverpool, simple as he would be in the starting 11 at the gunners and man u may loan him back to us for a year. but good luck to the lad, its a real credit to the academy to have produced a player worth 16 million.

Samba on the other hand, i still have doubts to whether he will leave, it's clear that Wenger is intrested but it seems that he is far from the number one choice, Sakho and Cahill look to be one and two. the samba thing will keep ticking over and i reckon any serious move's will be further down the line.

as for replacements, we need to tread carefully, remember Nelsen is still a main centre back for us whilst Hanley is obviously a great talent. personally i would'nt sign a replacement when Jones goes, we would still have Samba, Nelsen, Hanley and Givet can slot in thier with good effect. if the scenerio happens where both go id take a stab at one of these guys:

Serdar Tasci

Scott Dann

Rodger Johnson

Bruno Ecuele Manga

Karim Haggui

John Mensah

£30m (ish) for two centre-halves on a team that nearly went down?

One played the last third of the season in that position and one arguably kept us up in the final few games with his heroic displays. I think a proper striker would have kept us up with ease, so £30m + sound about right :)

Only £16 million for Jones?.Surely Clause should have been £20-22 million.People running your club seem clueless. How hard can it be to run a football club properly?.

I have to agree with this. It was clear by the time he signed his contract that Jones is going to be a 20million + player

I can only suppose that Jones and his agent were gunning for a lower clause value to boost their chances of big sign on fees with a move. That would be the logical dynamic as fa as I can see it.

A few here have mentioned Hanley as a replacement - is he really that good though? He has done okay in a couple of games -particularly Fulham away - but I can't say I'm that excited about him. Seems a bit slow and lacking in positional sense.

If both Samba and Jones go we have a massive rebuild on our hands and it - massively annoyingly - takes the focus away from the big issue of what strikers to bring in.

The track record suggests that if we lose Samba and Jones only around 1 out of every 2 players we bring in will meet the required standard - for every Tugay, Robinson or Bentley there has been a Kalinic, Grabbi and Ferguson.

Also, annoyingly, most of our best performers have been slow starters - Samba, Bentley, Nelsen etc. were gently eased into the team. WIth two centrebacks leaving and Nelsen's injury situation we are looking at least one new player coming in expected to play 40 games a season. Typically these sort of high stakes signings have been a little disappointing for us.

Why is Jones a judas? He isnt. He wants to talk to other clubs if fee is met. He wants the best for his career also.

Loyalty doesnt exist in football anyway. Just cause Maldini, Terry, Giggs, etc stayed at their clubs their whole careers doesnt mean people at lesser clubs would. Unfortunate truth. We should have maximized return though.

can we provide Jones and Samba, with what they want to achieve ie trophys and champions league? In all honesty, we cannot provide enough to satisfy our players, and that is to be a success by winning things. it would be selfish of us, if we stood in the way of both Jones and Samba.

any player, will want to join a bigger club. we are a big club, but not big enough to convince players to stay.

the disappointing aspect of it all, is that the owners are clearly not showing enough to convince our top players, that we will be a force in years to come. you would expect, that if they were serious enough, that a top manager was. brought in, and money to spend on better players than RSC and M Diouf.

the current players want to see good players coming in, and not a repeat of what happened last season. Good luck to Phil and Samba if they move on, and hopefully things are resolved without any problems.

Iceman, spot on.

The owners came in and talked a big game, but if they cant convince our own players to stay, then what hope for top 8 players?

Yes, Jones would have left one day, but most are in agreement we couldve seen him play here for 1 more season at least. I never imagined he'd leave this summer. To add insult to injury, the fee is much less than we expected.
