knobblybottom Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 The estate where I lived for the first 20 years of my life - the Redcap Esate beyond Intack - was a rather desirable residential area 40 years ago. I haven't lived there in that time though.

thenodrog Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 The biggest revelation on this thread by far is that someone on this messageboard willingly drinks with Gordon! Thats cos being English I always stand my corner when in a round T4E. This'll first astonish you then it will horrify you as a typical sweaty but I don't even mind buying the 1st and last on occasion if thats the way it works out.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Drove through Blackburn early evening yesterday and was absolutely appalled at the stupid stunts that were being played out on Blackburn's roads. Dodge City on wheels it is. I rarely venture into Blackburn these days but I was amazed at how driving in town at these times has degenerated to a state of complete lawlessness. Goodness only knows what priorities plod follows these days. I was following two top of the range mercs that were two abreast driving at 15mph and straddling the white line on Preston New Road whilst the occupants chatted across to each other. On two occasions these cars actually stopped in the middle of the road unconcerned about other road users behind. Ignorance and a fine example of the attitude and respect of todays Blackburn youth. My 2lb lump hammer and I would have remonstrated very strongly except I was in my wife's car and it was at home in it's normal place under the seat in mine. Next up I waved a BMW car through in front of me and into the queue coming off the Station / Vue car park with 3 of Blackburns finest inside. Nice polite wave I received too.... before they immediately pulled out and roared past the entire 200m queue at top speed and on the wrong side of the road forcing their way back into the queue just before the traffic lights. With so many families crossing the road both on the pedestrian crossing and before it from the cinema this was not only typically ill mannered but extremely dangerous. The rest of my journey was dotted with examples of typically poor and inconsiderate driving practice. Stopping as lights change to red, use of indicators, mirrors and simple courtesy appear to be forgotten skills. Time for action from the authorities and some good old fashioned policing and screw the current total reliance on the plethora of speed camera's on our town's roads. The tactic is simply not working. Sorry to be pedantic but speaking as someone who uses a hammer for a living ( 1.5 lbs is big enough for me). A 2lb hammer is just a hammer, a lump hammer would need to be around the 4lb mark, just saying.

T4E Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 As the first one to mention country of birth here the evidence would suggest you do.
FourLaneBlue Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 PAFELL - What happened anyway, are you still looking into moving to Blackburn? Must say, I was very impressed with the new town centre and market. Best thing to happen to the place for years. Shame there's hardly anywhere to go for a pint at night anymore, however. Coacheloads used to come to Blackburn for a night out. Now, they go the other way.

ABBEY Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 http://www.thisislancashire.co.uk/news/9051843.Grandfather_attacked_in_Blackburn_park/?ref=mr GREAT IS BLACKBURN
Rover_Shaun Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 As I said earlier I would very strongly recommend that you look West of Blackburn towards Chorley and Leyland. Transport links are very good (road and rail), the housing stock is better and it is better quality of life, try: Brindle, Hoghton, Higher Wheelton, Brinscall......also plenty of MBers in these areas. Even try Leyland which has great transport links, nearby Preston has a massive Chinese (wife ?) community thanks to UCLan students and lecturers. I like living in Brig. Direct access to Ewood via the train to Mill Hill and the Navigation pub. Easy access to Manchester via Preston train station, as well as easy access to the motorway network and no hills when it does snow. Plus the best ale pub in the northwest called the Withy Arms. I even have a 20 minute rural commute to Bae with only two sets of lights

Backroom Tom Posted June 2, 2013 Backroom Posted June 2, 2013 Anyone know much more about these proposals for 4000 new homes in Blackburn? They are meant to be building 500 just off Gib Lane which isn't far from us and wondering what the plan is ie budget housing or not and how it will effect the area There is a meeting at Feniscowles school on Tuesday evening for people to find out more etc just wondered if anyone knew more

There will probably be some kind of requirement for some of the homes to be set at "affordable rent" level but I think it'll be about 5% of the total houses built, and they will be mixed in with the houses which are for rent and for sale. They certainly wont be building a 'council estate' if that is what you're worried about.
Backroom Tom Posted June 2, 2013 Backroom Posted June 2, 2013 Looking at a telegraph article the homes are to be 'executive style luxury properties' Which begs the question does Blackburn need 4000 new executive homes?
Sparky Marky Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Oh yes, they will all be bought by investors and then rented on....probably be a upsurge in benefit types and immigrants.
Paul Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Looking at a telegraph article the homes are to be 'executive style luxury properties' Which begs the question does Blackburn need 4000 new executive homes? It's part of the BwD Strategic Plan, all LAs have one, to provide 9400 new homes over the next 15 years. A survey in BwD showed higher paid workers in the LA but don't live there. Executive housing is presumably intended to change this and keep money circulating locally. BwD is obliged by law to have sufficient land available for six years of housing development at any one time. Its the same for all LAs. In BwD that means 3500 houses. Currently only sufficient for 1500 so local residents will see more of this over the coming months as the search for land continues. Good location, you can see why it's been chosen. Going to need a new or upgraded road to the motorway? Which doesn't mean I necessarily agree with green belt development. http://www.blackburn.gov.uk/Lists/DownloadableDocuments/shaping-growth-in-our-area.pdf

Out of 39 new homes 6 are social housing. Incidentally they are the biggest 6.
Backroom Tom Posted June 3, 2013 Backroom Posted June 3, 2013 Certainly hope they sort the roads out Paul as its a nightmare getting out at the Golden Cup as is Schools in the area are also getting quite full I suppose I'm a little hypicrital moaning about it. I only moved here last year and live on a Redrow housing estate that was only built 12 years or so ago, people probably weren't happy then!
T.J.Newton Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Even these 'affordable homes' are only affordale to reasonably well paid working couples and upwards.
cn174 Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Even these 'affordable homes' are only affordale to reasonably well paid working couples and upwards. Yup 80% of market rent.
