You can't tell him his opinion is wrong that ain't your right.

I share in Jims thoughts on this one so maybe I should tell you that your attitude to it is wrong?

TBF I don't think Jim's attitude is unusual - most fans of rival English clubs have wanted their 'enemies' to fail abroad for decades.

Not so, 1970s and 80s we all supported Forest, Villa, Liverpool etc in Europe.

The dratted Champions League changed all that.

First of the Lyon hat trick was in the first half so that can't be a fair comparison. Newell all the way.

Meh, the answer when it is posed as a a quiz question is no longer "Mike Newell". That was one of my favourite football facts too. :(

Now all we've got is who's won the FA Cup three times in a row. Its not quite the same.

I dont give much of a damn about english sides in Europe, not when you have teams like Barcelona around. I feel too many of our teams are overrated as are many of the english players who play for them, so to see Man Utd get knocked out by Basle isn't a bad thing in my opinion.

I dont particularly care about the english national side either to be honest. Only in knock-out competitions do I genuinely want them to win. I just get sickened by the hype surrounding the team. I was hoping we were going to get spanked by Spain just so that we'd enter Euro 2012 with a bit of realism and to not get carried away.

It's worked out that I'm almost always for the English clubs or one of the Scottish clubs if they should make it but I really don't mind underdog teams, I wasn't for Basle, Switzerland but you figure they probably don't go this far often, the same thing for teams like Lille, Bilbao, Atletico Madrid, I'm really not against teams like that. I've been hoping Brum and indeed Stoke do well in the Euro league and in the past, I was for Fulham who have had some good runs in recent years. There will eventually be off years like this. Clubs like Real Madrid and maybe Barca have funded big money teams for a long time. I'm kind of sorry Man City went out even though they have immense financial resources. City have been world beaters in the PL, maybe Mancini did not put enough emphasis on Europe.

Maybe the PL has become too competitive and it is hurting these clubs, I do believe Man Utd has had a number of 1-0 type wins lately against clubs you'd expect them to defeat marginally. Chicharito Little Pea Javier Hernandez if I'm correct has scored crucial goals to lift United this year so they must miss him if he is injured.

I cheered on Fulham to the final, if Stoke do the same then I'll do it again.

But United? Not a chance, any chance to see these kind of mega clubs that have ended up disproportionalty large struggle is a delight.

No 'banter' from Man Yoo 'fans' who wouldn't know how to get to Old Trafford if you dropped them outside the Stretford End, no wall to wall coverage on how 'it's amazing that Fergie builds top side after top side', no pundts coming out with 'you need to be a special person to play for Man United' and so on.

Bliss.

Call yourself a football fan ? I'm a heartbroken as a newt celebrating !

The days of blanket support for English clubs in Europe are long gone.

Hopefully Arsenal and Chelsea will get knocked out next.

Correct. Unfortunately the Champions League itself is the enemy of football and in particular football supporters and that will roll on. The inequality of our top domestic division is rooted in the stupid Champions League format which is in place simply to generate huge wealth for the elite rather than benefit the majority. Gone are the days of the European Cup being a sudden death knock out from the off FOR CHAMPIONS making the competition a procession of the richest clubs to the top table of the final stages thus perpetuating the financial imbalance.

My mate is a Man U fan and I can tell you that although he pretends otherwise he has totally lost the plot regarding the rest of the Premier League. He hasn't a clue of the feeling of trepidition before a fixture against stronger teams and the concept of relegation does not cause him a flicker of anxiety. He just doesn't get it and imo has lost touch with what should be football reallity where the difference in winning and losing should be down to effort, team spirit and ingenuity and not the size of debt that some ingenious smoke and mirror financial johnny has put in place. There is no way that I would swap him the level of euphoria that I experienced in May 95 for all their Prem titles cos they don't mean anything special to the Mancs any more. In fairness the best they have come in sheer unadulterated delight since winning in the Prem 92 can only have been Barcelona 99.

Top level football now is a feeding frenzy for assorted money men rather than the people's sport which it once was.

Unfortunately both Mancs crashing and burning will not turn the tide of the CL ... just the emphasis. Amen

Worst bit of all is that they now will screw up the UEFA cup and the expectations and hopes of countless thousands of supporters of those teams. It all just becomes crap.

Spot on Theno.

I'm really not a fan of teams getting into the Europa league having been knocked out of the UCL either.

We will never lose the joy of seeing Mike Newell as a quiz question answer.

A better worded version of the below will be going in my Pub Quiz nect week :D

"Some chap called Gomis recently broke the record for the fastest ever champions league hat trick, who's record did he break?

Investigations into the game now... if they find anything untoward has gone on maybe the game will be stricken from the record books and big Mike will keep his record :tu: (I know it's unlikely... but there is some hope at least :))

"Who broke Mike Newells fastest CL hat trick record recently and as a bonus question who does he play for" might be a tougher option but with the same effect Dirk. ;)
