Heat your room to 105 degrees fahrenheit plus, paint everything grey, get a half inch sheet of metal and put an inch thick piece of foam on top, replace all the lights in your bedroom with red ones, set up a bunk with three tiers and put yourself at the top, find two naval engineers and feed them beans for a week and have them sleep below you. Then once you hop in bed have some guy walk about every three hours and randomly tell people they are late for watch. Occasionally have your wife or girlfriend (boyfriend) run into the room banging a bell and screaming "General Quarters, General Quarters. This is not a drill. Set condition Zebra throughout the ship. General Quarters"

Works like a charm for me.

I've struggled badly with getting to sleep in the past, but now I have very little trouble.

For me it's vital to stay in a good sleeping pattern. Make sure you get up at the same time every morning, no matter how little sleep you've had. Eventually your body clock will kick in. Herbal remedy tablets help me get to sleep and fall back into that pattern.

No worries BKR. Sometimes listening to music sets me off to sleep because it stops my mind from wandering. When I'm stressed, I can't stop thinking about things and I can't nod off.

Paul, years ago when I just could not sleep, my dad found some herbal remedy online and it's brilliant:

Like all herbal remedies, the only problem is that they can make it difficult to get up the next day if you take too many. It's important to find a balance. The dose on mine says 2 tablets, but that would put me to sleep for days! I usually take 1/2 to one tablet.

The other great thing about these is that they help me sleep when a migraine comes on - a real life-saver.

If you don't fancy getting any online, then I find most supermarket herbal remedies do a good job. Sleep-eze are good.

People can be reluctant to try the herbal remedy sleeping tablets, thinking they're in some way dodgy. That's just no true and they're sold in the aisle along-side your hayfever and multivitamin tablets.

I used to have massive problems sleeping, but they stemmed largely from a really messed up sleep pattern. Getting into a good one is certainly the best way to go about it, but if you're only getting 4 hours of sleep a night and still struggling to get to sleep that's a problem. I get about 6 hours from about 1 - 7 and by the time I go to bed I'm exhausted!

I always used to find reading for about an hour before bed used to make me really tired. Or putting on some music and drifting away into that.

I'm a good sleeper, but I have to a very strict set of conditions for me to get a good nights sleep. I can't sleep with a light on. It has to be more or less pitch black when I go to sleep. Although I can happily sleep with the curtains open. I used to have to be sure that the standby light on my tv was covered over, otherwise I would just lie there thinking about it. The door to my room has to be shut and the doors of my wardrobes closed. I'm unable to sleep on long haul flights, because of the noise and movement going on in the cabin. When I came back from the U.S in April I had an overnight flight and didn't sleep a wink. On the bus up from Dublin, even though I was shattered, I still couldn't drift off to sleep. The more I try, the more conscious I become of trying to get to sleep and not being able which makes things worse!
